About the only publication I buy now, and seriously considering kicking it into touch after reading the article this week by "Neil Murray" the used bike expert who has a column every week telling us about the best used bargains etc, the heading this week is "Copycat used bargains" first he is citing Triumphs Trophy 1200 tourer as a copycat of a BMWR1200RT that failed to capture the market and is a good bike and a great used bargain, then goes on to say he'd be happy to bet the S10 wont be long for this world, as it has failed as a copycat BMWR1200GS and asks why buy it when you can have a GS?......No wonder the S10 doesnt sell when dickhead journos like him spout shit in that rag of a newspaper, and the road testers from the same paper slated the S10 the same when it was launched and really drove the knife home for a great machine that has a different engine configuration for a start if it's a copycat? Well I'd be happy to bet he hasn't even cocked a leg over an S10 either, so his opinion is worth doodly squat, and I sincerely hope his next shit is a hedgehog followed by pineapple!!! Rant Over!

Re: Motorcycle news UK

I agree completely, MCN did a video comparison when the S10 was launched, took all of the bikes off road and slated the S10 after it dumped it's oil through a cracked sump because it didn't have a sump guard! It's always unfairly compared to a GS even though it costs £4k less

BMW...BMW

I'm so tired of them buying good press..that's what it appears is happening when jourlist back pedal giving them praise all the while trashing other brands...BMW is not the panacea of motorcycles. I've owned a number of them and had issues with all of them.

No body talks about them being one of the most unreliable bikes built today...this is not me saying this but the Consumers Association..

Guess he didn't mention Yamaha is the most reliable bike built today!

I've had the rest ...none I'm buying the best !

Re: Motorcycle news UK

Oh, forgot to mention...I made my choice after riding bikes and making an informed choice. I did not even want to try the S10 because it did not feature in reviews...but it won my respect in an hour! The latest GS left me cold and unimpressed!

I'm a bit confused how what a magazine/paper writes about the Super Tenere would upset anyone.

Regardless of what they write the bike remains the same. Why the need for a nod of approval?

I'm not looking for a nod of approval, I purchased my bike on it's own merits, and just knew after a short test ride it was the bike for me! and have no regrets at all, and previously owwning a TDM900 it was a natural progression onto an S10! But this journos claim the S10 is a copycat of a GS and has failed to match it is utter bollox!!!!! It could be said the S10 is an evolution of the XTZ750 from 1989, and the modern GS is an evolution of the 1980-onwards R80GS which won the Dakar in the early eighties, until the XTZ750 come along in the ninties and won twice as a 750 and four more times as an 850! so it could be said the XTZ750 was a copy of the GS but didn't fail ::26::

Warning. My repeat diatribe on this subject.......

The BMW GS(A) is THE bike that whispered, then called, and finally demanded my attention, over the many years I have frequented dealerships, as I purchased other bikes. I suppose it took that long courtship because I wasn't old enough, or mature enough, or sophisticated enough to fully understand the genre. And speaking of genre, the BMW GS invented it! Defined it. And created the RTW image that is etched in my psych.

However, that delay for me to finally embrace my first RTW bike afforded me to have choices that previously never existed. In fact, it was 2011 when I pulled the trigger.

With roughly 5000 posts of redneck gibberish on this forum, it's not news that my GSA was from Japan. And regardless of the press, it doesn't take deep research to know why you choose the Super Tenere vs the original. (if you do)

My disdain for the press in general, (and not just for their folly in motorcycle journalism) does not diminish my lust for the GSA. That bike defines my passion for the "mission statement" that these few non-poser real world travel conquering machines represent.

But I don't completely ignore my brain either.

To me, the Super Tenere is the better GSA, albeit AFTER you throw some $budget at it. And fortunately, BMW ensures you have ample $dollars to work with.

I love both machines. They are direct competitors. I have zero regrets. I'd buy a 2017 S10 if I had to decide today.

Edit: No I wouldn't, on second thought. I'd buy one of the amazing deals that pop up on this forum for well farkled and cared for used samples. Then throw GSA equalizing $money at it.

LOL - Don't sweat it, as you have the right attitude.
We go through this now and then when some journalist who doesn't have his/her own money in the bike writes something very similar to what this thread is about, to gather sales for the publication.

Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has got one.

I'm pretty sure that with the amount of shit and abuse my bike has received, if it was a more expensive GS, it would have given up the ghost a long time ago.

I'm with Snake on this one. The GS is a great bike. I rode both AC and WC models, and really liked the WC model. It was quick, lighter than my blue tank, and had nifty features like the easy to operate screen. That said, there is always the doubt in my mind that the GS which was almost 40% more expensive than my 2011 Tenere would fail me in a big way. Final drive, odd ball electrics (can bus?). In the end my wallet won, and I'm happy for it.

On a side note, I had the pleasure on working on a friends GS700. It's not a well built motorcycle. It doesn't feel solid, or properly thought out.

The saddest thing is that when the new WC GS was launched, a well known UK journalist, Kevin Ash died on the launch. The cause was never revealed, and his passing did not get much press
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2267144/Kevin-Ash-British-motorcycle-writer-killed-accident-fellow-journalists-trying-BMW-motorcycle-press-launch.html

Another UK mag, Bike UK, while at the launch had a scary close call, where at about 60 mph went into a full, lock to lock tank slapper, luckily riding out of it, but breaking a steering stop in the process. At that launch, they gave the bike 4 out of 5 stars, saying that it's the cats ass, but they need to do further test in the uk to determine if the incident was a one off.. one journalist dies, and you guys have a close call, is not a one off. Long story short, when back in the UK they did all sorts of test, and the GS passed with flying colors, getting a 5/5.

Papers and magazines are in the: we need to sell them lots of shit , business.
Form your own opinions. Read what other people have to say about bikes they bought with their own money.

Tenere 1 BMW K1300s 0................Out for a 200 miler today, a bit cold and roads a bit dirty and salt put down so speeds were down, that was until a K1300s tagged us and appeared from nowhere, I moved over and let him past, then the chase was on through some fast bends before Kirby Stephen, he was going for it and couldn't shake me off, so much so he fluffed a corner and eased up, and then pulled in for fuel in town............yes I know it was childish ::005:: but it felt soooooo good ::015::

I use a BIG filter when going thru ride reviews in most rags. I get more real info from user forums of whatever model I'm interested in. Again, I have to filter the data and anecdotes, but after somethings been out a year or so you can get a feel for problems, reliability and strong/weak points. I really like GS's but I didn't want to live with the higher maint. cost among other things.
Also, I can get a feel for how much I'm going to like a bike by how much I identify with it's fans. So thanks guys. You all helped make my decision easier.

My pal just bought a 2017 GS1200 and is very happy with it. He's had 2 before. It was over $30,000.cdn OTD. Almost 2 times the price of a new S10.
