Looking at the other side of the coin, I wish Yamaha would act in a similar manner and replace the CCT and clutch basket on pre-2014 models :)

Agree on the CCT, but not the clutch. If some people think it smooths the vibes, and they are sensitive to them, then go ahead and change, but not really a Yamaha problem.

Good for BMW, they have way too much invested in this segment to not be pro-active. Other's , incl Yamaha could do a lot to learn from this. I still don't like the "they all corrode like that sir" line.

Article says 2003 to 2011... so thats as recent as only 4 years.... and IMO, it goes back to that old saying; "Better late than never" especially if you are a person affected by it....

Will be interesting to see how they handle customers that paid for these repairs already themselves. BMW had denied plenty of claims for this problem already. If I had previously paid a $1,000-$3,000 repair bill out of pocket I would be looking for reimbursement. Might be a payday for many or else they will further piss off their customers.

Article says this "While BMW says the fault will only occur due to incorrect maintenance" so doesn't really indicate it is a BMW problem but more of the share tree/DIY mechanic not following torque specs.

In the past BMW has reimbursed customers when they have paid a dealer to do the repair/replacement prior to the recall notice being issued.
Yamaha did the same for me when the ignition switch ring antenna failed on my '06 FJR. I paid parts and labor for the replacement while travelling and 800 miles from home. A few months later Yamaha issued a recall for the switch, after a call to Yamaha customer support I was sent a check to cover the cost of parts and labor.

It's what reputable companies do.

Given how many BMWs get sold with "full BMW service history", I'd wonder who it is that BMW think are over-tightening these bolts.

From a post from Michael Kneebone, IBA President, on Facebook... this is not related to this current recall, but he's obviously pissed off at hearing about BMW final drive problems and thinks they, or the NHSTA, should do something about it.

"Another rider left stranded on an IBA ride, in this case the IBA Full Court 1500 BBG in Florida on March 12, 2015 - I thought BMW had fixed the rear drive problems - you know, the ones that don't exist - and how is this not a safety defect with oil all over the rear tire after drive self-destructs."

Do you happen to know the year & model BMW? The last generation (pre-WC) to current are supposed to be the "good" final drives.

They fixed it in '05, then again in '07, then I think they got it right in '10, and finally with the wc bike it's fixed. No that there was ever a problem.

Left drive means pre-liquid cooled and not a K-bike. Mag wheel makes it a road bike, so it is most likely an R1200RT.

Alloy wheels are also available on the R1200R and the R1200GS.
The standard configuration of wheels and features differs from country to country. It's the importer that makes the determination as to what will be on the showroom floors. However it is possible to place a special order configured as you wish. Wait time will be 8-12 weeks after the order is placed. My '15 GSA was a special order because I wanted to add the low suspension, key less ride, LED headlight, but not shift assist.

My dealer was happy to place a special order, several others were in the pipe line, there were no new GS/GSA's on the show room floor, and the next allotment of GS/GSA's was sold out, same for the new RT's. The new bikes with the LC motor are a big seller here in my part of the world.

Bike sales are so geographically sensitive. In San Diego, the local BMW dealer has EIGHT GS/GSA's on the floor that are attracting zero interest. They were initially hot, but now, idle...

I've got a clock just like that coming my way in the next few months, my '11 R1200R will be the donor. In the 9 months that R has experienced the fuel pump flange recall and is subject to the 12 year extended warranty on the fuel strip. I say 'good on ya' BMW for finally waking up and tending to business. ::008::

I was at the local dealer for lunch yesterday, was hoping I'd see longrider there. ::010::
They just took on KTM and were uncrating the 1st two bikes, a 1290 Super Duke and a 690 Duke, both were sold. Their next Super Duke is due to arrive any day now and will be a demo bike. Next Saturday they'll mount up a pair of TKC 70's on my GSA and if there demo has arrived I'll get some seat time on the Super Duke.
