Modes, S and T, my thoughts.

Reflashed by Anthony. I ride 90% in S mode now. T mode for rain, offroad. The throttle control required for S mode (stock) was tiring for extended periods and in traffic. Not anymore.

That's funny, just got mine done by Anthony and I feel S mode is too aggressive in traffic, it's better than stock though!
Heck I just got a speeding ticket 2 days ago. Damn it Anthony!!

I prefer Touring mode, only tried Sport mode a few times on my 13 and it seemed like mostly just a gimmick , seems like the same horsepower but a much more touchy throttle in Sport mode. Will be interesting to give it a try on the new 2018.

Regarding engine braking, I've noticed that the braking is reduced in S mode but seems about the same as stock in T mode after my reflash. I can tell the difference by changing from S to T while decelerating. The combination of reduced engine braking and defeating the fuel cut makes for a much smoother off/on/off transition in S mode compared to stock.

I flashed my own.
S is quick and can be tricky keeping the front wheel on the ground when shift to 2nd or 3rd.
Combo of throttle and more fuel added.
T mode now acts better than stock S mode.
MPG either mode is around 43

Well 700 miles on the 2018 so far, I’m loving it, having cruise control is great ! No way of knowing for sure but I suspect past 80 mph my old 2013 might of had more power.

I'm nearly always in S mode,

When i first bought the bike S seemed too snappy - but it was just a matter of getting accustomed to it. The bikes heavy engine breaking and light clutch make managing engine speed and momentum a piece of cake.

I use t-mode on hard-pack dirt or gravel roads, i don't really take the tenere into proper mud - that's a job for a lighter bike.

Well I’ve tried sport mode a few times now on the new 2018, seems fine, yes it seems a little more snappy but like the 2013 I had I think the two modes are mostly just a little gimmick.

I can't stand using T mode....feels so sluggish and unresponsive. The bike isn't really all that powerful to begin with so feeling the lag in response while in T mode isn't my cup of tea (T, ha!) We're all different, though, so I can understand other people liking it.

I am probably a prime candidate for an ECU reflash, I always want more response from this bike. I had a Triumph Tiger 955i before this bike and loved that engine. At least this bike always runs!

I don't know if I would consider the dual throttle a gimmick. Admittedly, I don't use "T" very often. I, like tntmo, don't like the "T" throttle response; on clean, DRY, pavement. I definitely think that it has a use in low traction conditions like sjh mentioned, and WET pavement. Because unlike everybody with all those "low horsepower" Teneres, my Tenere will break traction quite easily in "S".

So do you think it has more horsepower in sport mode ?
What horsepower there is is there quicker is all. I haven't been out of S mode in years. Luvin' AC's flashed S mode with no decreased decel. To me these motors don't have near enough decel, that's why I asked Anthony to not touch it.

I ride like a dick, a LOT of throttle, a LOT of the time. And I by far prefer T mode. Which was unexpected. S mode does nothing my right wrist can't do, and smoother. Smoother=more control. I wish S was more than just the throttle mapping and actually gave more power somewhere in the curve.

*unless I am GROSSLY misunderstanding these modes, but I have a decent bit of FI tuning experience and a taking a fairly educated guess. Different "modes" are in 99.9% of cases a remapping of the throttle and in cases of automatic trans, a remapping of the shifting.

So do you think it has more horsepower in sport mode ?
No, just the way the fuel map is done differently. No difference in engine "power", just how it is delivered, and when on the throttle twist.

I am always in "sport" mode, unless in the dirt or rain.
