I rode it with a skid plate but would say it was not really necessary if you stayed on the route.

While you'll probably be fine, the risk is much greater than having no skid plate. There are reports and photos of stones being thrown up and breaking the oil pan. It's a weak point in the bike.

I agree its worth installing the skid plate. 99% chance you're fine, but especially in the southern half, there are some places you don't want to be stranded. I did the MABDR with my 2013 S10 last year, and its a really great experience. You'll have a great time!

Except for 4 minor (very minor) water crossings, you would have little problem riding an unprotected Gold Wing on the section between Virginia Rt33 and southern PA. Can't speak to north or south of there.
