9,000 miles in, and I have a distinct metallic ticking sound coming from the engine at only 3,000 to 3,200 RPM - then it goes away. I'm no mechanic, but I'm guessing it sounds like valves?

Anyone care to chime-in with their two-cents worth?

Similar issue with my FZ1 after installing different headers. Come to find out it is just a harmonic vibration as the bike passes that rpm range. I have a 2012 with 9,800 miles I ride with ear plugs when I take them out and ride I hear all kind of different sounds. But the bike runs great. Probably nothing.

Would be great if it were nothing. But... it wasn't there before 8,000 miles - I'm sure of it.

Another reason I find a good set of ear plugs invaluable. I'm sure I'd be uneasy if I heard all the noises I'm missing.

This is the noisiest engine I have ever owned. Not sure id be concerned but I haven't heard your noise. Of course, mine is still under warranty.:)
LOL! Yeah, almost like a KTM. If it doesn't sound like a bucket of bolts, there must be something wrong. Think I heard ticking during start yesterday...maybe the decomp cam.

Was low speed riding around the very small backroads down in Cornwall last week, without my earplugs in and noticed the same thing. It sounds like valve train ticking and was more obvious when the engine was cold. Once the engine was fully warmed up the noise disappeared. +1 on what longride says too. ::021::

Yes, I've heard that about valves - a little noise is better than no noise. I have acute hearing and notice slight noises - so I assume it's a recent development. I only wondered if, by chance, I should have the valves adjusted?! As I recall, the service interval is 22,000 though. (Some 13,000 miles down the road…) I didn't want to do any harm by continuing to ride that long, which is why I posted my inquiry in the first place.

I agree, it's a noisy engine. Turbine smooth it ain't, but it sure tractors along nicely when you need it!

Thx for the input!

Bring it to the mechanic for a listen and get some peace of mind if you have it under warranty don't worry about it, this thing sound unstable 100% of the time. My Triumph 1050 Tiger sounded like a sewing machine about to explode but never gave me a problem even at 45000 miles.

If I didn't have ear plugs in I would be in a panic constantly ( a Quote from Fog horn leg horn) “This boy’s making more noise than a couple of skeletons throwin’ a fit on a tin roof”.

What grade gas are you using?

Hi my bike does the exact same thing. Have you resolved your problem? If so, what was it? Thanks

Not saying you won't get an answer, but, keep in mind that was six years ago. I've done the same thing. :)
