I've moved this over to the Debate Room subforum, to allow for a little more leeway. Keep in mind this isn't a political forum.

Thanks!

Just moved to Maryland from California. People joke about CA being a socialist/communist state, and certainly it has its problems, but let me tell you that MD is on a whole other level. Even though my Super Tenere is a 2012, I will have to pay a sales tax to MD for registering it here (in addition to all the registration fees and title fee). Because CA tax rate is higher, they generously will charge me only $100 for the privilege of moving to MD.

Today I brought the bike into a dealer to get the MD state inspection done. $75 later they tell me it failed because the rear brake rotor is beyond the spec. It measures a quarter of a mm too thin. I can't smurfing believe this place. So now with a new rotor on order, with me installing it, I'll be out $200 before I even go to the DMV.

I hate it here already.

Where in MD are you?

Welcome to the "Free State" or what I refer to as The Peoples Republic of Maryland.

Your 10/22 won't be a problem as long as you've not cut the barrel short. I think the minimum is 16 or 18". Handguns are the target of the gun laws here.

Total vehicle tax and registration will be less than in Cali but less than a lot of states. Gas costs less, especially down near Pax River.

Speed cameras are common, but then most of them are near schools. Cars used to fly by the school around the corner from my house at highway speeds, and this on a narrow 2-lane road. People still do those speeds approaching, hit the brakes, and past the school gas it, but we no longer have the Moms getting T-boned pulling out of the school parking lot. Be warned that the cameras are moved around Montgomery County randomly. Some of the big intersections have right-turn cameras too, so you really need to do full stops before turning on red. We no longer have traffic radar in most of MD, most jurisdictions went laser a long time ago.

As for the inspection, it's all on the computer now and if you fail you can no longer go to a different inspection station.

In the movie Zootopia, the characters go to the MVA, only to find all the animals working there are sloths in slow motion. They probably got the idea here.

I liked Danmark, everything is done and beautiful. The roads are great, trash is picked up and believe me after a night of partying they toss shit around like anywhere, by 9am the Elves must have magically appeared to clean up as I never saw anyone actually picking up the trash.

You can order a beer with your value meal, nobody freaks out if you have a drink on your lunch break at work or if you drive.

Great healthy food, you can eat out and not worry about a bad meal as they take immense pride in everything they do.

"free" medical so you break something you don't have to worry about filing bankruptcy.

Outstanding public transportation that runs n time.

Time off! You would crap yourself if you knew how much time off from work many Euros get in the summer.

Free college.

People dress with pride and dignity, are well read and educated.

I really wished I had stayed, I thought firearms mattered, and to a point they do, but I would rather have a country that cares for each other and their infrastructure than the US where it's a struggle to get pot holes fixed or books in schools cause muricans do not want to prioritize paying higher taxes over having garbage they do not need but feel entitled to.
You forgot to add the bit where your Personal Income Tax is 65% if you earn over $55k and you have to pay into a private retirement scheme, not one funded by the government........

Whatever CW said. I'm not familiar with the 10/22 and didn't realize it was a long gun. I only had one long gun the entire time in lived in MD. I'm much more familiar with the MD hand gun laws since it dictates where and how I can go through the state.

Look on the bright side. I've heard bad things about living in CA and the way they treat their citizens. Sure, maybe MD is worse, but at least you're not moving from a good state into MD. That could be a devastating shock to the system. Think of CA as training to become a Marylander.

Montana. Register a bike once ($90 with a vanity tag) and you are done forever. Permanent registration.

Shared a beer last summer with a fellow from Baltimore. He said they pay a rain tax. Yup, the city determines the square footage of non-permeable surface on a homeowner's property (eg. Roof, driveway) and then levies a tax depending on how much rain falls. And for this you get to live in a city that is in the top ten most taxed locations in the country and has one of the lowest rated school systems in the country.

Both of my mid-20s kids live in trendy Baltimore neighborhoods and we finished a gut/remodel on my daughters' 1900 row house a year ago.
Lots to do but the tax on her row house is near $6,000/year!!!

The thing with maryland is that once your pass the inspection. You never have to get it inspected again. the lawman will only bother you if the violation/repair is very obvious. Yes, the inspection it is very rigorious and cost 75.00 as they actually take the vehicle for a test drive and they test everything.

In Virginia, the safety inspection is yearly, but not as tough to pass.

In terms of hi capacity magazine, you are allowed to have possession of them but companies will not ship into the state. Buy all the high capacity mags now or when there's a gunshow in VA, buy them there. You can also forget about Conceal Carry permit in Maryland.

I went to Univ of MD, but after graduation, I quickly moved to Virginia.

::025:: I need that top sticker for my truck. Also that's insane. My property taxes out here in Ceciltucky are right about 2100/year, and luckily don't get hit with any local town taxes either as Rising Sun proper has lots of legal issues.

My wife and I have also considered moving to PA, we live right on the border as it is. I work in NOVA, but rarely need to be in the office.

As BMWGuy wrote, you can have the weapons, you basically just can't carry outside of your home or business unless you are law enforcement, have documented threats on you, or regularly need to carry a lot of cash (iirc >$10,000 six times/year typically for a business). When these laws were passed A GENERATION AGO, Baltimore and the MD suburbs of DC were damn near war zones. Teeny little Kennesaw GA isn't even a joke as a comparison. Baltimore is half again larger than Atlanta with what was a very run-down inner city, and MD is a very small State. We also got a LOT of poor in the MD suburbs of DC. The death rates and poverty got so insane in DC and Baltimore in the late 70's and early 1980s that the people DID vote and the pendulum went too far to the left, giving us the gun laws which have been changing back to the middle. (We now have a pro-gun governor.)

After total changes in DC and Balmo politics and police departments, the inner cities have been totally revitalizing and the trendy places to be. The shootings really kicked up last summer when both it got hot and the Freddy Gray riots took place, but this map of where homicides took place shows how easy it was to not be where you shouldn't.

My daughters' place is just a few blocks from where President Bush's daughter Jenna lived, on the south side of the inner harbor. While the news went on and on about how bad the riots were a year ago, the reality was that she walked down to watch and talk to people. The people who got arrested were really going overboard and being stupid to do so.

On the up-side about MD, I work in the heart of DC with all the big city attractions yet pass cows to get home. (DC has TOTALLY revitalized beyond what Balmo has done!) In 3 hours within the State we can go from ocean beaches, to the biggest of big city events, fish in Chesapeake backwaters, or be in the mountains shared with West Virginia and western PA. With DC and the military bases, our economy stays fairly stable while a lot of the country rides more of a roller coaster, too. So there are some attractions.

Welcome to the East coast Ron , sorry your getting screwed . Be very careful riding your bike around here a lot of these roads where made for horse and buggys and they have crappy oil and chip coating . Oh yeah a couple other things when your in Delaware people driving in the fast lane go the same speed as the person next to them for miles and people in PA. think the double yellow lines are for them to drive on. There are some beautiful places to ride the bike though !! When I moved from NJ to PA I had new vehicles with four year inspections but when I moved I had to get them inspected every year by private garages and they failed one for a blown fog light which is an accessory not necessary . $$$$

That would fail here to. The law says, "if its fitted, it has to work"

I almost had a truck fail because the licence plate fell off and was in the front window. Fail reason was blocking forward vision. We threw the plate on the floor and it passed. Not having a plate is technically illegal, but not an inspection failure.

I grew up in MD.I lived in the Bird River area. That's about 45 minutes from down town Balt. In summers some of my friends and I worked on Truck farms near by we picked Beans, corn,& vegs. On Sunday mornings I could ride my Yamaha RT1 thru the trails close to 50 miles each way to the far side of cockysville. We could shoot in an abandoned Sand pit near my home and I do mean shoot any thing with gunpowder. But sense I moved to FL. 35 years ago those days are gone.BTW It,s changed that much or more here in rural NE FL. I have to say I think I grew up at a great time.

I'm sure you don't know much about Nazi Germany besides what you've been told, made to believe by the 'friendly' Jewish media outlets.
I read these words somewhere. Great way of summarizing the vibe of the planet. Here they are:

This is the slave pit. We're in the mud together. We aren't free. Rights are the carrot they dangle in front of you to keep a deluded sense of hope alive. They don't care who you marry, who you have sex with, who you pray to. They don't care who you sell cakes to. They care about one thing. keeping you calm and sedated and controlled just enough so you don't fully rebel on a mass level. They keep the illusion of control alive for you so you feel like you can control your world and change things to your liking. It's all a play on ego. It's all a play on mankind's basic narcissism. The people with the real power don't CARE. They want to keep their slave pool happy and productive. Voting. Lobbying, protesting, everything you see on the media is for YOU. It's for your distraction, entertainment, and to perpetuate the illusion that you can control the world.
