Just moved to Maryland from California. People joke about CA being a socialist/communist state, and certainly it has its problems, but let me tell you that MD is on a whole other level. Even though my Super Tenere is a 2012, I will have to pay a sales tax to MD for registering it here (in addition to all the registration fees and title fee). Because CA tax rate is higher, they generously will charge me only $100 for the privilege of moving to MD.

Today I brought the bike into a dealer to get the MD state inspection done. $75 later they tell me it failed because the rear brake rotor is beyond the spec. It measures a quarter of a mm too thin. I can't fucking believe this place. So now with a new rotor on order, with me installing it, I'll be out $200 before I even go to the DMV.

I hate it here already.

That's .0098". Can you take it to another inspection station? The guy may have a little better eyesight.
Might help if he has worse eyesight? Anyway, I though sales tax was if you bought something, not your own property that you have owned previously?

Yeah another inspection is another $75 from a different shop, so then I'm out $150 and still have the old disc. Crazytown here.

The sales tax thing is an absolute outrage. Socialism has to be paid for by someone, might as well be people who have vehicles since those who don't are the beneficiaries.

I recently moved and got similarly jammed bringing a few vehicles into the state.

Some states (my wife is from one) charge you an annual registration that's based on your vehicle's value. It can be hundreds of dollars annually to register your car. My home state charges something like $32/ year whether it's a 20y.o. junker or a brand new luxury car.

I hope you didn't bring any guns with you into Maryland. You're really not going to be happy if you're a gun guy.

I lived in MD for 8 years. The gun laws finally chased me out of the state. Much more sane in Virginia.

If I remember correctly, when I moved to MD I sold my car to my wife for $300. She wasn't on that title, so that worked.

Once you do start driving around your new state be sure to smile. They will be sending you $40 photos so you should look good.

Welcome to Maryland. It really is a horrible state on so many levels.

Freedom comes at a cost............................ and in this case, freedom to ride will cost you $$$$. No different than any other country in the world, there really is no freedom, just a mild perception of what we believe it to be. Some places allow a little more, some a little less.

Worse than california ???
I just paid $200.00 for 1 year registration on my 2013.Plus I have to pay $200 for registration on my 1997 F150 Pickup. Not counting the $60 smog fee.
I wish they did inspections here as half the cars would be off the road for being unsafe. ::021::

The CHP used to set up random roadside spot inspections. You'd get stupid violations like your headlights being out of aim or your windshield wipers too worn. I was once cited for my completely stock RD350 being too loud! I went straight from the inspection to the CHP challenged it. They dropped when they realized it was bogus. Analysis of the cost of the program, for costs, benefits and generally pissing everyone off resulted in the program being dropped. Good riddance.

You guys should stop your fucking whining, really ;-)

Here in Denmark we have to pay up to 150% to get a license plate on our motorcycle. Here the basic version of the Super Tenrere costs roughly the fee you are complaining about more than 30.000 USDollar ...

I did bring a Ruger 10/22 takedown with a pair of 25 rd mags. I will not be doing any checking into what these folks rhink i should do with my property in that case. Won't transport it loaded, readily accessible, or with the ammo in the magazines at all. Tell me i have to do something else....make my day.

If you do all that, and only that...

You will definitely be running afoul the transport laws in MD. They want to know why you have it with you. There are only certain answers that make you legal. Strongly suggest you read up on the MD laws. They will make your jaw drop.

Then look into moving services and a real estate agent in most any other surrounding state bordering VA.

You're preaching to the choir here. This is a terrible state if you're not a left wing wacko crazy enough to live in Baltimore or the area between Baltimore and DC. I can't stand the politics in this state. Live in the sticks? Your state doesn't care about you, you are the minority. My wife and I will be moving on to FL once our oldest son graduates Highschool in two years.

Note to self...don't move to Denmark.
I liked Danmark, everything is done and beautiful. The roads are great, trash is picked up and believe me after a night of partying they toss shit around like anywhere, by 9am the Elves must have magically appeared to clean up as I never saw anyone actually picking up the trash.

You can order a beer with your value meal, nobody freaks out if you have a drink on your lunch break at work or if you drive.

Great healthy food, you can eat out and not worry about a bad meal as they take immense pride in everything they do.

"free" medical so you break something you don't have to worry about filing bankruptcy.

Outstanding public transportation that runs n time.

Time off! You would crap yourself if you knew how much time off from work many Euros get in the summer.

Free college.

People dress with pride and dignity, are well read and educated.

I really wished I had stayed, I thought firearms mattered, and to a point they do, but I would rather have a country that cares for each other and their infrastructure than the US where it's a struggle to get pot holes fixed or books in schools cause muricans do not want to prioritize paying higher taxes over having garbage they do not need but feel entitled to.
