Major Problems with My Tenere 1200

After being in the second Yamaha dealership they are unable to cure a problem where for no reason the tenere alternates between running on two cylinders and then onto 1 then back onto two, tick over is hopeless as it goes to stall then revs to 1400, they have between the two garages checked everything agreed with Yamaha technical all the relevant checks have been done, they have discovered if they remove the lambda censors the bike runs fine, Yamaha England have said possibly the ECU might be at fault and have told the dealer to find a donor bike to test it, This seems hardly fair for somebody to loan there ECU from there bike and worse still I may impart my problem onto their ECU,
The bike is only just 3 years old with only 9000 miles on it, I am writing to Customer Care in Japan as I have no faith in Yamaha UK after as spending £700.00 between the two dealers with no result this is the least I am doing, has anybody had this same problem and was there any fix.

Many thanks
Tony

Don't put their ECU on your bike, put your ECU on their bike and see if the problem goes with it. No damage to their ECU.

Definitely sounds electrical and an ECU would be a good guess. I'd agree with OldRider's approach.

First, try two items related tot he wiring harness.

Make sure there are no shorts in the wiring harness. For example, having aftermarket crash bars can create a wiring chafe point near the right bar's aft bolt.

Re-seat the major electrical connectors. The UK is a great land for corrosion to get started in them.

Maybe the o2 sensors are defective and feeding back bad info to the ECU, and the ECU is making the bike run poorly because of that?

Mine have a similar issue, and was solved relocating the wiring, spreading them up.

Thanks for the info lads, Yamaha is delivering the bike back to me this week, still not fixed so will take your advice and separate the wiring, have also discovered Scotch Locks on the Fan wiring so will try to rewire them also

Many Thanks
Tony

You will have a hard job swapping ECUs for a test I think because in the UK there is an immobilizer that ties the key to the ECU.

If it is definitely the lambdas causing a problem then you could get the bike ECU flashed with a tune that disables input from the lambdas. CJS Racing near Bristol can do this for you. However, if it's not the lambdas you will still have a problem remaining.

Please let us know what cures the issue.

If the wiring harness is the cause I'd really like to know. And if it is I would hope that Yamaha pays attention to it.

Tony -
You didn't tell us much about yourself when you signed up; your previous posts indicate you have a 2012 with about 9,000 miles and are in the UK. Did you buy the bike used? Does it sit outside much? Commute through the winter with it?

Finding Scotchlocks indicates to me that somebody has been doing something in the wiring which is not stock.

If frez is correct then this wont help but if you think theres no chance of damage to mine you'd be welcome to try my ecu. Getting the time together might also be tricky coz I spend a lot of time up in the Midlands.

Blimey....ok. Dont want to go off subject here but it must be bloomin expensive if one has to replace the ECU (and barrel!!)

No, I think I need to clarify, only if you do a swap for investigative purposes, otherwise a dealer can just re-code the existing key.
