Just as an FYI... But worth remembering...

Bosch *OWNS* Purolator, and neither has their filters made by Champion Labs - at least not since 2006.

http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2006/02/23/211511.html

And both use "Filtech" synthetic media, as least partially, in all their filters, so buying a Bosch is essentially like getting a Purolator... Only usually the Bosch filters are a little less expensive, and they're black. Only real problem with the Bosch 3300 is that it is about 8mm longer than the stock OEM Yamaha filter, despite being listed as a direct replacement. For some this isn't an issue, but it is with some skid plates.

I am terribly sorry I mislead on the Wix filter!!!! My "scamsoil" guy supposedly matched up the part number as a direct replacement for the Yamaha filter.
I hope you didn't incur too much trouble "mcbearface".

I went to do my first oil change and mistakenly opened a drain plug located about 1/2 inch forward of the side stand position sensor switch. As only a few ounces of oil came out, I realized I had the wrong plug. Oops!

What did I open? (Don't have my service manual yet)

Welcome on, Stray Goose. Please consider posting under "Member Intros" so everyone can have a chance to welcome you. As I recently wrecked my bike and don't have one to look at right now, I'll take a shot and mention that there are two oil drain plugs on the Tenere. I'm thinking you got one of them. Not sure why it was dry though. Anyway, that's a thought. I may be way off base, so if so, please disregard.

Dallara. Request that you remove - Mobil 1 Synthetic 15w-50 from the list. I used that oil and changed it at about 3000mi intervals. I made it about 2500miles into the second oil change when my clutch started slipping once the engine warmed up. I immediately changed to a JASO MA spec oil and the problem went away once the friction modifiers from the Mobil 1 wore off (my theory). It's really too bad I can't use that oil because that's all that's available on base, and domestic Japanese market fully synthetic oil costs about $30.00 per liter! Oh well, back to either semi synth or dino.

Anyway, I'll now look at any oil that is not JASO M* spec with a suspicious eye. To bad there's no motorcycle spec synthetic sold on the AF base over here... oh well ::009::

Good catch, Tenerator.

Done!

I actually had been meaning to remove all the "car" oils for some time now, but just kept forgetting. The list now shows Mobil 1's "motorcycle" synthetics as well as their diesel ones, none of which has the dreaded "friction modifiers" that cause things like clutch slippage.

Just for the record, I personally use the Mobil 1 "V-Twin" 20w-50 Synthetic motorcycle oil in S-10. I usually get it via Amazon.com in a 6-quart case. Being an Amazon "Prime" member I get free two-day shipping and it comes out to about $10.00 a quart. That's the same per-quart price I can get ti for locally, but I save the 8.75% sales tax.

Thanks for the heads up!

No prob, and thanks for the info. I doubt anyone will ship motorcycle oil overseas, but it's worth a try. Roger on the friction 'modifiers,' I always get the Oil (Friction modifiers) and Anti-freeze (Corosion inhibitors) crossed-up for some reason. ::013::

Sure is nice to have full power to the rear wheel restored. ::013:: The first time the clutch slipped was while I was passing a car using the on-coming lane. I quickly defaulted to the mentality that I had when overtaking cars using my old 250. Pre-planning before passing was an absolute must ::008::

P/N for the 2013 FJR right side switch that has a combined kill/run/start rocker switch and 4-way flasher switch below it - 1MC-83963-00-00 About $75-114 plus shipping.
http://www.partshark.com/custompage.asp?pg=yamahaparts for about $88 shipped.

Just for giggles, the left side 2013 FJR switch that has all the Cruise Control buttons is - P/N 1MC-83954-00-00 - Not available yet, and more expensive. Does have flash to pass too.

You did not say but is Cruise Control a possibility with the FJR left side switch? I am not a CC rider but last night I could have used it. I am a 4-way and Flash to Pass fan.

That is unknown at this time. I feel it is likely that the FJR's CC is essentially an ECU driven function and is not possible to adapt to the Super Ten, but it may be possible to use the FJR switch assembly as a control pad for an aftermarket kit such as the Rostra.

Just a note about aftermarket filters. I'm in San Salvador and yesterday tried to install a - Bosch - 3300 (2.5") that I'd bought in Mexico. Turns out it's about 5mm longer than stock, and won't fit with my H&B bashplate.

A Yamaha filter is $25 here. So we found this alternative, for $4. I don't know if its available in the US, and the fact that the make a big deal about it being made in Japan makes me wonder if its not actually made in China... Anyway it's on the bike now, hope it doesn't disintegrate or something!

Edit: just found this interesting review of filters, where this one is tested. Nothing good, or bad, to say about it. I guess that makes it "average".

Just for the record...

That's just not the case in most countries. Here in the USA the Yamaha parts system has the additional two-digit suffix, but not everywhere else. I used part numbers as they appear in the largest number of worldwide Yamaha parts catalogs. You will find that most all USA dealers will readily be able to find your parts without the additional suffix, and their computers will simply add the necessary suffix for ordering or receipt purposes.

I believe ya, D -- but I called 5 different dealers yesterday trying to find the OEM grips in house

none of them had any in stock and after the third guy I made the comment that I needed to add the "-00" when I was asking

all of the 5 parts guys said that the extra "-00" was needed to check on ordering.

Aw well - I couldn't get them anyway - so I was only trying to help the update on the #'s

FWIW : I ordered BMW grips anyway seeing's that I had to order online anyway.

Thank you Dallara

Interesting, Hannabone...

My dealer here never has any problem with me giving him the Euro/Jap parts catalog numbers to check stock availability, stock, etc. As you say, he knows he needs to add the suffix to get the Yamaha USA parts system to *take* the number if he needs to order it, etc. Maybe it helps that this shop here has been around forever, that it's a family operation, and most everyone there was raised in the motorcycle business and on the parts counter at one time or another.

Funny, I'll pitch Euro/Jap numbers for parts I *KNOW* they won't have in their system (like the Euro/Jap left-side handlebar switch assembly) and they'll always catch it, with some answer like "That must not be a USA model part. The USA model part number is XXXXXXXXXXX..." :)

Good info to know that some dealers have problems with it, so thanks for pointing it out. Just reinforces the disclaimer I made in the original post, that I can't guarantee the part numbers, etc. or that stuff will fit, and that *The List* is just a guideline.

Thanks again!

I just used the the last of my case of stock oil filters. The list lists the super tech 6607 fits the yamaha that is the same filter size that my Nissan and Toyota use. If I use a car filter that is the same size are there any concerns about spring pressure or flow back in the internals of the filters of a motorcycle from car filter, because if not it I could just use the one for all?

No real concerns. 14-16 psi is pretty much the standard pressure relief for these filters. A problem I'm having is like you, I'm down to my last oem filter from ordering a case of them, (at about $6/ea), and now they are $9/ea and I'm looking for a quality replacement. I need a 2.5" filter due to the Rumbux and Bosch/Purolator, (same company, btw), changed the PL/L14612 filter length to 2.96", (from their site, and I measured some in the stores at ~3" actual). I emailed Purolator and the best they could do is suggest I look for old stock on the L14612 at Advanced Auto. There are no Advanced Auto stores in Utah. :( Guess I'll look at Sears and the other two Walmarts in my area to see if I can find any, or the SuperTech ST6607. One Walmart didn't even carry ST filters any more.

FWIW, the PL14610 was ~3.5" long when I measured some in the stores.

I had a coupon for NAPA and bought the their NAPA Power Sport filter #PS1358 filter. It is 70mm or 2 3/4 in long. Fit my Yamaha alum skid plate. I bought 6. Cost me 3.99 each on sale. The box has little words on bottom that say Wix Filtration Corp.
