I didn't like the stock bracket setup at all...insufficient adjustment, difficult to adjust, and kind of cheap feeling. The Madstad bracket is anything but! Very solid, increased adjustment range, and includes a standard size 7/8" solid machined aluminum bar for mounting accessories. You can attach the standard ST shield to the Madstad bracket, but I went with their light gray, Super Tenere pattern shield. I did a lot of fiddling with both height and angle (yes, the Madstad gives you angle adjustment as well), but finally found the right combo. Madstad also has a great program to allow you to exchange the shield with no restocking fee within 30 days if you want a taller or shorter shield, which I think is awesome!

Anyway, between the Madstad setup and the Yamaha side wind deflectors, I feel like I've finally got the wind management thing taken care of about as well as possible. The Madstad combo runs about $300 shipped, but the entire factory bracket system is replaced. It's worth it, in my opinion. Here are some pics:

Honestly, I haven't put anything on the bar yet. I would say that the setup appears to be rock solid, however, so I can't imagine there'd be any vibration. Notice the two nearly vertical braces that connect the shield brace to the fairing (using one of the holes for the factory side wind deflectors). I think these help a lot.

I have the Madstad bracket on my 2013 (Gen1). Don't know if Madstad supplied the vertical braces for the Gen 2, but for the Gen 1 there were no braces.
My chunky Garmin 590LM sits on the bar. At first there was quite a lot of vibration on uneven roads and what worried me was the possibility of failure of the plastic L shaped stays that hold the windshield (the Madstad bracket attaches to these plastic L shaped stays). I manufactured the vertical braces, similar to the one in the picture above, and the vibrations were totally eliminated. I only hope the plastic to which the braces are anchored (which also hold the side wind deflectors) will not break, but I've been using this setup for 3 years or so and all look fine.

I just ordered the Madstad bracket myself but not sure on what to do about the windscreen. Will tackle that later. What size did you go with on the screen?

I got the 22". You can run it all the way down and lean it back if you are not very tall and see over it. I'm 6'3" and can see over it by a couple of inches in the tallest position.

Went with 22 no tint initially. Then, mostly because I'm a bit, uh, retentive, I exchanged for a 23" with light gray tint. Their exchange program is awesome; not charge, you just pay return shipping. Not bad to get exactly what you want. I'm 6'1" but fairly long of torso. Honestly, the 22" was probably perfect for me, but I can always lower the 23" a bit more, and it gives more flexibility on the upper end.

Are the side wind deflectors worth buying? I’m 6’4” and experience quite a lot of wind noise / turbulence and am not sure if it’s my stock (“tall”) windshield or air coming around the sides.

did you get the bracket without a shield? madstadt told me that it’s a package deal. I don’t need a shield only the bracket.

@Mallardmission:
I emailed Madstad yesterday to ask about buying only the bracket and their reply was:

We normally offer it just as a complete kit, but are able to sell as replacement parts. The kit, with everything except the windshield, runs $159.95, plus an estimated $15 shipping and would include:
  • Pair of Madstad adjustable brackets
  • Pair of metal side supports
  • Aluminum crossbar (7/8" diameter)
  • All required mounting hardware
I think prices are in USD.
