Lost a rear tire at over 100 this morning. Steering going full lock out of the blue at that speed is always.....fun..... The subsequent few times were interesting...

Kept her upright. Used up my luck for the year. All that went through my head was... Sure you were just running to buy a screw you didn't need to put on your jacket......

Way to stay calm in that situation. I’m assuming the tire was not repairable? Nice start to Ténéré ownership.

Scary stuff, glad you saved the bike and your skin!
Can you provide some background? A new to you bike but what condition was the tire and what caused the flat?

Tire looked to be in good condition, previous owner said there was about 3000 miles on it tread depth would jive with that. I looked at the tire last night and had the caliper off of it. Was chasing that slight front wobble on stopping and found uneven wear on front pads, so I popped the rear off as well to see if those needed replacement.

After getting home, there was a puncture mark in the center of the tread. So I hit something.

Good finish, it was not luck, you piloted it well. But think of the TPMS. If you had gone with full load and passenger, it would not be so easy. I post some pictures of an accident, a simple fall, a deceased passenger. Deflated rear wheel ....

Way to keep your head, glad it ended well. Please.....always wear your gear.
I'm firmly in the most of the gear most of the time. Always gloves, boots, pants helmet. I will skip the jacket on a quick non freeway run in the heat. Meant to hit the hardware store 5 mile round trip. But forgot the screw at home I needed to match and decided to take a long way home before coming back.... I should know better.

Nice recovery and some real steady nerves!
Since your S10 is a '13 were your tires the original Bridgestones or Metzelers?

Yeah, now I'm REALLY thinking your wobble in the front is tire related. Get rid of it. 'Cuz, it had been the front tire that let go....there would have been a DRASTICALLY different ending. I've lost a rear tire bead before, but not at that speed; same ending though.

Glad you stopped safely. If you're not wearing all the gear, perhaps running the ton is not the best thing to do? At more reasonable speeds this would have been less exciting for you. Low rear tire pressure results in a weave. Rapid deflation is actually fairly rare. But it sure gets our attention when it occurs.

This was a set of Avon Trail Riders. Allegedly only 3000 miles on them. Tread depth seems to agree with that, but who knows?

Yep, its gone tomorrow. Rear is off in the back of my truck If I had the 19mm hex front would be there too. Going to go to the tire shop and have them do the rear and bring the bike back for them to do the front. Got the 19mm on the way, but not going to screw around and wait. I have a set of mitas 07s that came with the bike Ill throw on till I decide on what tire to run next.

Every once in a while we need a reminder we are not immortal. You hope those reminders end in saying "wow that could have been bad learn from this" Not "wow that hospital stay sucked".

Good job keeping the bike up. Buuuutttt, why on earth are you running 100 mph on this bike on public roads. Really good way to good to go to jail or get dead. I'm all in for have some fun on them but it ain't no sport bike.

1) The old tires may very well have had only 3k miles. But, tires age, and dry out; Texas is hell on tires. 2) I've had to replace bike and car tire(s) with plenty of tread left on them; but they got hard and lost traction. 3) Check the "born on" date on the Mitas; I assume bike tires have them the same way car tires do. That way, if they're old, you can avoid a similar incident. 4) Yes, 100mph is a little excessive. But, not because it's a Tenere; it's just as excessive on an R1. Specific tires make it more or less dangerous.

Checked that when I bought the bike, Mach 2016 date code for manufacture on the Avon that blew. Mitas are 2017 date code. Out of a beach city in SoCal so not going to get the dry rot and heat damage like it would here in Vegas or you in Texas. Thankfully I have a good tire guy, I've watched him inspect brand new in the wrapper tires before saying he would mount them or not. If ever in Vegas MTC is the place to go.

Five years old is the maximum for mounting new tires. Cars is the same, but you can dismount patch and remount up to 10 years old.
