Thanks from Snowy Alberta.

Despite all the complaints about Garmin Basecamp software I found it actually pretty easy to use for planning routes once I got the hang of it. So don't shy away from a Zumo. I have a 660 and the can be had for close to $300 right now which is a good deal in my mind. And I mounted it with a regular Ram bracket on the stock accessory bar

I have 3 Garmin GPSs fitted in this pic:

Zumo 660 up front rigid mounted to my aluminium checkerplate 'screen' - running in 'North Up' mode.
Zumo 550 on the left. Mainly as a simple data logger and I also use it to search for things so I don't have to fiddle with the main navigation unit. Mounted on a RAM mount attached to the strip of angle aluminium you can see below the handlebar.
Zumo 590LM on the right is the main navigation unit - running in 'Track up' mode. Mounted the same as the 550.

Dated but functional Zumo 550 with the Ram Mount and powered cradle. Originally mounted by prior owner. My only adjustment was to tilt it further forward so it doesn't hit on the tank bag during a full left lock turn. (Second picture is sideways for some reason)

I've actually been using a Garmin Nuvi 2455 for several years. It's not a motorcycle specific design. The design has been superseded by newer models, so they are pretty inexpensive on Amazon (you can find a refurbished one for under $100.00). When I tour, I carry two of them, in case one breaks. I waterproofed them according to a tutorial I found on Youtube. One of the weak points in the Nuvi is where the USB power cable attaches; it's not a super-secure fit, so the connector tends to vibrate, and the vibration can weaken the connections. I solved this by semi-permanently attaching a short 6" cable to the GPS unit, and the power cable plugs into this short cable; that way, I never have to unplug the USB from the back of the Nuvi. The Nuvi is in a RAM cradle made specifically for that model, and attached to the accessory bar with a homemade RAM style mount. I also attached a homemade sunscreen, made from sheet plastic. It attaches to the RAM cradle with velcro.

I plan on my routes on a free program called Tyre to Travel. I have found it to be way easier to use than Basecamp. The downside to it is that you do need to have an internet connection in order to plan routes on Tyre, because it uses Google Maps. You can create standard .gpx format routes, and easily transfer them to the Garmin. These same .gpx files can be uploaded onto your phone and read by the OsmAND navigation app. It can come in handy to have the same route loaded onto both your GPS and your phone.

If you decide to go with the Garmin, make sure it has the Trip Planner feature, if you want to use the Tyre program to plan your routes.

The photo shows the Nuvi on the left side of the accessory bar. To the right is a homemade weatherproof box for my Droid Turbo. That thing attached on the center of the handlebars is another homemade cell phone mount.

I use my Samsung S7 mobile phone with the Copilot mapping app. It is "waterproof" and with me always.

I like Copilot. For £35 you can have all of Europe and all of USA and the updates are frequent.

I 3D printed a mount. If you search my posts you will see pics.

I did not want it in a sat nav case - the case always fogged op in the rain.

I got fed up with my old Garmin because updating the maps was torture.

Running a Samsung Galaxy S7 with the OsmAnd+ app. The app can run independent of cell coverage and I've used it all over the world. This photo is from before when I was using an S5 in a clunky case because it was not waterproof like the S7.

Velcro'd to the left of the instrument cluster is a combo pen/stylus.

The charge cable to the bottom of the phone goes to the right inner fairing, where there is a USB converter on a SAE plug. https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/battery-tender-usb-charger
The SAE plug is fused and connected to the battery, in case I need it to run an air pump or charge the battery.

I don't know how to give a link to another thread but take a look at 'Garmin sat nav solution' under Vendors. It works really well.

I use to use a TomTom Rider, mounted on a ram ball to the left:

I've converted tho to an IPhone mounted in a waterproof case (Cellularline) mounted in the center:

On that, I run the scenic app. which is moto-specific and seems to work well. The case allows the phone to
be plugged in for charge at all times & then I use a small Bluetooth adapter to power my ear buds wirelessly
from the phone for music:

Basically that lets me combine the GPS with the phone, with the camera, & with the music system thus saving space, all being charged constantly (the Bluetooth amp has something like a 60 hr battery so that's not an issue). The only thing I don't like is that the phone will ring thru the ear buds (I don't have a mic hooked up). I really hate getting phone calls in the middle of nowhere.....

I have the Zumo 390LM. Bought it refurbished. Works great, tested in heavy rain, and the curvy road selection can be fun.

Here is a picture of the mount, which is the one that comes with it on a ram ball. Can't find one with it.

That's where the OSMANAD+ works great. You don't have to be connected AFTER you download the maps (wifi). The pay version gets you unlimited maps, though space could become an issue. I got the contour lines add on as well. If I ever upgrade to a waterproof phone I'll probably ditch the Zumo 550. I'm going to Guatemala in a few weeks, and I've already downloaded the Map for OSMAND+.

Not ideal for large tank bags users but I've found the location to be perfect to view and a shorter reach to tap the screen or give shade. Touratech makes the mount and it's pricey but I found this with the Garmin for a fair price from a former owner. Took some imagination to get it to work with the Rox riser but I managed and it does not shake and is somewhat secure to the closet klepto. Hardwired to the battery and I use that as my accessory for air pump or charge.

if you have down loaded the map, I don't think any of the GPS apps require use of data to run. GPS is running on your phone 24/7 unless you turn it off (always triangulating between cell towers). The apps just make use of that location info to place you on the apps map I believe.

I recently discovered Here We Go for Android. Very detailed map n can use both offline n online. For offline mode it is required to download the maps.

Many of the cell phones have an actual GPS capability, so if you download the maps you're good with cell location and data turned off. We do this routinely for work, when we go somewhere fast, before the admin folks at home get a chance to put our work location into our coverage area.

It makes a HUGE difference to your bill when traveling abroad. I thought I had the cell turned off when working in Norway for a couple of days and it was actually on. The phone charge was slightly under $500 and boy did I (rightfully) get chewed out! Another benefit is to cut hacking of your number. One of the group got his number hacked when we were in the Middle East last year and the bill was something like $45,000 by the time the admins were notified. The phone company took that one off, as they said the hackers doing this will usually use the data plan to move porn videos on the black market.
