I agree with AVGeek’s sentiments - liberal western democracies and their societies are stuck in a rut that they can’t seem to get out of. Every “minority” is unhappy and wants “more”, and when you add up all of the substantial “minorities” they are the overwhelming majority (women, BAME, disabled, “young people”, Moslems, Jews, single parents, LGBT etc.). The press and politicians love to champion the causes of these “minorities”, but this just breeds resentment from the other “minorities”. I don’t have an answer, but minority rule isn’t working.

As someone who isn’t in any of the overwhelming, downtrodden “minorities”, I’m tired of feeling like it’s somehow my fault. It’s like living in a Kafka-esqe dystopian nightmare: just charge me with what I’m guilty of, exact whatever punishment is due so that we can all move on together.

tenman its good to be a trump supporter , he is a great president , I will never apologize for that ..... I'm not a cool aid drinker , I judge a president or any politician about the amount of freedom I have and I have not lost any under this president ..... in fact my rights have been championed by this president ....( the bill of rights is there to protect the minority from majority abuse ) all I need to know....

This is a good discussion. We don't all have to agree on political affiliations or policies. Main thing is we get along in our own little world.

don't forget " ballistic" you have friends
How very true Terry. I was just commenting on that the other day to my wife. Of all the negative aspects of my job, I was able to meet lifetime friends. I was reminded of that the other day. My truck was in the shop, and I'm unable to lift anything heavy. A former coworker who lives down the street from me (and also my friend), took me to Lowes and picked up my rolling tool chest. He lifted it, helped me assemble it, and put it in place for me. I don't have many friends. I feel very fortunate and grateful for the ones I have.

Unfortunately many voters are "single issue" voters. They look at one issue and seem to ignore the rest of the baggage that comes with a candidate or party.

Leaving in droves, are they?

Cuomo may be the single most popular politician in America right now.
"A new Siena College poll released this week showed Cuomo's overall favorability among New Yorkers at 77% while 71% approved of the job he is doing for the state. Asked who they trusted more to make the right decision about when to reopen New York, 78% chose Cuomo while 16% opted for President Donald Trump."

Cuomo popularity highest in 7 years
"New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's (D) favorability rating is at its highest point in more than seven years, according to a new poll, driven by overwhelming support for his response to the coronavirus pandemic. [...]Seventy-one percent of respondents said they had a favorable view of Cuomo, up from 44 percent in February[.] "

Conservative New Yorkers trust Cuomo over Trump on state reopening
"In the poll, Republican and conservative voters also said they prefer the Democratic governor's judgment on the issue to Trump's, with 56% and 57%, respectively, favoring the governor."

All right-wing websites are ablaze right now trying to smear him. Wonder why.
As the illustrious MSNBC co-host of Morning Joe Mika Brzezinski said on live microphone. “It’s our job to tell the people what to think”! She’s a chip off the ole Zbigniew Brzezinski block.

Guns are an object, just like a car . They can be safe and fun or deadly when used carelessly or with malice. Abortion always kills the innocent 100% of the time. So not the same thing. Trump can say the sun rises in the morning and those against him will rail he is wrong. This virus has not hurt America as much as politicians have reacted to the projected possibilities that some computer generated. Like one bad cop has destroyed millions of dollars of property, he did wrong he will be punished, so why the continuation of the riots. It’s a political attack that was waiting on an opportunity . A hundred years from now another bad cop will do something to someone else. Well it could be tomorrow, now the screams are about getting rid of cops . Imagine mob rule, it’s already on display.

This is getting into an interesting discussion, but I hate to see the terms "stupid" and "hate" enter into it now. Personally I do not support this president, as I can see plenty of facts that he is not to be trusted, he lies constantly and when he is not telling lies, he is exaggerating. What confuses me is how many of his supporters ignore the content of his character and do not realize that they are being taken advantage of with all this disinformation.

Supporting him because he has not taken away any of a person's personal freedom was mentioned. I first voted in 1964 and have always supported who I considered to be the best candidate, regardless of party. While I have not agreed with what all that these candidates did after they were elected, none took away any freedom from me. It seems that loss of freedom has become a talking point in political campaigns over the last few years and scare tactics and exaggerations have been used to gather support, even though these threatened losses never occurred.

When Obama was elected, the GOP was at low tide as far as supporters. In a meeting held in DC on the day that Obama was sworn in, top GOP strategists met to decide a strategy to regain support. It was decided to oppose anything that Obama proposed as far as legislation. Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was one of the attendees and he described that strategy as a "full court press". While that may be good for a party, logic tells us that it would never be good for the country. We are still in a state of what is good for the party, rather than what is good for the country.

One scare tactic that was started when Obama got in was that he was going to take our guns away, even though that was never under consideration. It is still used today in an effort to take advantage and manipulate honest gun owners. I grew up using guns for hunting, I earned an expert badge for the M14 rifle in the US ARMY in 1964, so have a long history with guns. I support reasonable regulations to help insure that honest gun owners can continue to own them. As with many issues, if you follow the money you can learn a bit more about a subject. Watching the rise in stock prices of US gun manufacturers throughout the Obama administration and the immediate drop when Trump got in illustrates this. Remington stock went from the $3-4 range when Obama got in to the low $30 range when he left, followed by a drop on the day after the 2016 election. I wonder if those manufacturers actually would have liked to see Obama continue in office, for the sake of their business.

When the market crashed in 2008 and the country was in a recession at the start of 2009, a stimulus package was passed to try to get the economy turned around. As with some other countries, it was realized that if private business wasn't spending money, the government should do so in order to try to turn the economy around. I traveled a lot on my ST1300 back then and saw lots of highway projects in progress, each with signs indicating that these projects were part of the recovery program. In keeping with their strategy, the GOP opposed this program. A talking point at the time was that it was driving up the deficit. That deficit is much higher now, in part because of corporate tax cuts, and the present massive amount of emergency spending to try to help businesses and workers that are affected by the virus. I support those efforts, but find it interesting that we don't hear all the alarm about the increased deficit. Depends on who is increasing it, I suppose.

As far as health care, the ACA was passed without GOP support. It was a long way from what I would consider what this country needs to improve healthcare, but it was passed in an effort to make some improvement. It hasn't affected me at all. Recall the scare tactics and exaggerations at the time about "government takeover of the healthcare system" and "death panels". All BS, but many believed the exaggerations. I have been on government healthcare for 12 years and love it. Medicare pays 80% of my healthcare bills, after a small deductible. I pay for supplemental insurance to cover the other 20%. Neither is free, but very reasonable and I have never been denied coverage by any provider.

Some of the former cabinet members, including former Chief of Staff John Kelly have now come out to say that they do not support Trump because he has done nothing to try to unite the country, rather has done much to divide it by demonizing the opposing party or anyone of his party that dare to disagree with him. I have never seen a president do more to divide a country. I can recall that it wasn't too long ago that I didn't know or care who the people I knew supported politically. Sure, there were issues that we didn't all agree on, but I don't recall people hating each other or calling each other stupid because of political differences. It is truly sad that we see so much of that today.

While I don't agree with the president and his tactic and I think he is a despicable human being, as evidenced by his personal behavior, I do not consider his supporters stupid and do not hate them. I am mostly puzzled about why many intelligent people do not realize that they are being manipulated and taken advantage of. I have gone on too long here, sorry, but I just wanted to say that I hope that we can once again get back to where we each consider what is best for the country, rather what is best for our political party of what is best for ourselves personally because of one issue. I would support any candidate of either party that would at least try to unite the country.

Boy has this thread left the Carona virus and turned into a political Trump bashing thread.
So much for no political subjects.
Even the moderator has joined in and even called this a civil thread.
Give me a break
You can ban me now
No need to pull out the ban hammer if folks are being polite and keeping this to an actual debate. So far recently, people have been keeping things fairly civil in my mind because while I certainly don't agree with some of what's been written, there is a difference between debate and attack. As Fred wrote, things go downhill when it goes to name calling and pointless us versus them, so that's when the pruning shears will come out and I'm sensing we're headed that way again.

Being it IS the Coronavirus thread, let's at least try to get back to that.

OK, back to COVID-19. Three weeks ago the Wisconsin supreme court ruled the governor's stay safer at home order to be unconstitutional. Since then cases in Winnebago county (that's where I live) have tripled. The rest of the state has seen the number of cases double. Most new cases in Winnebago county have been in the 20-29 year old age group. The county health department issued a statement calling it "troubling". We will no doubt see another large increase because of the demonstrations. It's going to be a long summer.

Magic, my youngest son is leaving Brown County, WI in 2 weeks and has accepted a job in Williamson county, IL about 2 hours south of us. He has also seen the increased cases in Brown county, presently 2361 with 38 deaths. Williamson county, IL has 76 cases with 3 deaths. I live in Montgomery county, IL where we have 41 cases and 1 death. While he enjoyed his time in WI and we enjoyed visiting him in Green Bay, we all will be more comfortable with him being closer to home with fewer cases of the virus. Still, nothing guaranteed, but we like the odds better.

Well Fred, good luck to you and your son. I don't think he will miss anything about Green Bay. I had always planned on moving away from this part of Wisconsin. Shortly after retiring 6 years ago the family obligations really started to mount, making it almost impossible to move. We would be driving or flying back and forth constantly. My wife and I both have family members that need assistance. Moving out of town is a possibility, but we would still be running back and forth almost daily.

When talking about the virus, there are two aspects, the medical and the political. The medical aspects are changing regularly as we learn more about the virus, which then also affects the political aspect. I also believe the intensity and duration of the protests have at least a indirect correlation to the pandemic, given the 2 months or more of lockdown to try to contain the virus. People have a lot of pent up energy, and all it took was one spark to unleash it. I like to consider myself a student of history, and while personally trying, this year has been intellectually fascinating.

I think history will ultimately point to this year as a major turning point in US history, but it will be interesting to see which way it turns. The classic democratic republics only lasted about 200 years or so before collapsing, so we have a unique opportunity to break the cycle or continue down the rabbit hole.

I also saw recently that the WHO is once again recommending masks to be worn in public. I know the CDC here has stayed with that recommendation....Nevada has started to open back up, including a number of the casino and resort properties. While changes are noticeable, people seem to be following old habits. I'm afraid this virus will be with us for a while yet, I'm just hoping enough people have been exposed to provide some level of "herd immunity", although I did see a report that Sweden may have made an error in their approach (although their healthcare system was far better prepared to deal with an outbreak than ours here in the US).
