Left engine-heat management options for reduced swamp butt?

I made the mistake yesterday, in very hot weather (A Temp reading 91F), to ride for a short distance between MGTTX stops without gloves. Well, the actual mistake was putting my left hand on my hip and noticing that it was considerably warmer, even at highway speeds, that the right side. It was actually better when stopped as the radiator heat was no longer being dumped on my leg and crotch.

Up until that point I was blaming my mesh pants (Joe Rocket Phoenix Ion) and the RDL seat for causing quite a good amount of discomfort, enough that I felt the need to sit up on the pegs every few miles to let it all ... air out. After that hand-on-hip event, I kept wondering if that wasn't because of the air flow on the bike. And now I can't get it out of my head.

From a cruiser to a Goldwing and everything in between, I never actually had this problem before so I'm not sure how to address it best.
  • Can I use something to cover the gap between the left-side cover and the frame so that hot air doesn't come on my leg? Some combination of the makntraks's deflector and Tenman's infill shown in this post: Handmade accessories.
Would this cause issues with the engine cooling?
  • Also nod to richarddacat for his forced-airflow solution in this thread: Hot left leg?
  • I tried beads and I think they help, but only a little and I don't like how they make me slide forward with every application of the brakes. Worse so in these pants whose seat protection works as intended.
  • Maybe get some microfiber shorts so that at least it increases comfort and it removes some of that polyester (DYNAX) feel on the back of my legs and butt?
    • Maybe try bike shorts or LDComfort shorts, although the moisture-wicking materials tend to work when you have good airflow, otherwise the Texas humidity seems to actively oppose evaporation.
  • Move to a dry-humid area? But a 2021 Goldwing Tour DCT in Ardent Candy Red ? -- rather try some of the cheaper options first
I know that some of you don't have this issue, or think it's not a big deal.
But for those of you who were inconvenienced enough to do something about it -- what worked, what didn't?

From a fellow Texan, and heat hater, I don't think I've noticed this before. I'm going to have to pay closer attention now. To me, it get so hot all over that I don't notice a specific body part. I just try and tune it out. I'm gonna keep an eye out to see what your solution is though.

The tank/faring gap was never enough to bother me and the radiator exhaust is usually far enough out to not be a problem either, especially with my overpants. I have used the radiator outflow as a hand warmer.
However
Looong ago, somebody cut some foam and filled the tank/fairing gap, then also cut a piece of plastic to move the radiator airflow out just an inch or so iirc. The point was not to move the exhaust out by a distance, the point was to eliminate the roundness of the fairing aft of the radiator to break the airflow from following it back to his leg.

I seem to remember some with this problem was due to previous owners leaving parts off, or "mods" of other kind for unknown reason to improve cooling ect. If you didn't buy new it would be worth a thourough look at everything on the fairing/radiator. I never notice heat on the legs, but always wear a full Aerostich Roadcrafter suit even in 100 degree weather.

Now that you mention it. . . . I do remember someone taking off the side panel, and discovering that internal baffles/ducting was missing. I couldn't get search to work; didn't use the right words I guess. Philipmat, you might want to pull the side panel, and see if everything is present.

Google mesh seat covers. I've had mine for years I think it's a Cool Cover. I cut mine off at the back of the riders seat with scissors. It won't fray. Once you put it on for a while and take it off. It will kinda hold it's shape and be really easy to put back on. Mine has about 10 staples in it. You can see a shoe string I rigged to hold the back down. It doesn't move at all. I see them for $20 on the slow boat from China sites. If you ride in dusty conditions. It will collect a ton of dust.

Tokyo gets very hot and humid and I often wear jeans but haven't noticed this problem even in the frequent traffic jams. I'd get the bike checked out if I bought it used.

I have ridden mine in temperatures up to 44C (in Europe, not U.K.!), and I have never experienced any heat directed back at the rider. IMHO, the side mounted radiator and fan takes all the heat away from the rider.

There was another thread here where the inner radiator scoop/air director was missing. His bike ran hot and I can see where hot air might exit the rear of the left faring if the director was missing instead of being diverted through the radiator. Have you checked to make sure it's there and not dislodged? I knocked mine loose in a minor tip over once, though it evidently remained in position. The little plastic push pins that hold it in place are pretty easily popped out it appears.
