Okay, I can't decide which way to go on luggage. I saw the Trax luggage from SW-Moto and it is real nice. I like the look and how they are put together. But now I just seen the Odyssey II system from Xplorermoto.com. They are working on a set for the ST and look really nice also. They also have a double loop mounting system that moves the boxes forward and back 5" to give a passenger mre room. These cases are also seen super strong. Has anyone used them before? Here is a link to the site. http://www.xplorermoto.com/index.html

Maybe it's just me but a lot of these aftermarket cases dwarf the bike they are installed on. I am by no means a off road rider and you guys are the pros but I like the looks of the factory boxes they fit the profile of the bike nicely. I know you need a lot of storage room taking long trips but I'm going to do mostly local daily commuting and weekend rides so the factory luggage will work for me. Those Odysseys do like stout and well built for sure.

I am with you on this one. Most factory bags are less than 35 liters. Anyone who fills most of these ginormous boxes is just packing too much. I cannot imagine doing a real adventure tour with 80+ liters strapped to an already heavy bike. There is one guy on the Horizons Unlimited Achievable Dream series that packs everything he needs for an around the world tour in a single soft tailbag. I definitely over pack most of the time and want smaller luggage to make me plan better. The new 26/32 liter pelican set has my attention now. As for Jesse Luggage I do know the quality is top rate and many riders recommend them.

My Jesse Odyssey II bags leaked from day1 . To fit them on the GS you had to relocate the factory turn signals and use a cheesy license plate bracket. The hardware rusted after a year of use. The brackets were not removable for the times you wanted to ride without the bags. I could not recommend them with all the other options out there. I will never buy Jesse bags again. I'm going with the Micatech V2 bags....side loading so I dont have to unpack to get into the bags, they move fore and aft, and you can remove the mounting brackets.

I've always wondered about the Odessey cases, they look adventure worthy. Are those hinges on the outside of the cases?? :-\ Surely they're some type of retainer/clip that allows a person to remove the lid completely? Can someone tell me for certain if those are hinges or clips?

The person that mentioned the Jesse's leaking - Was that this type of case? Where did it leak? At a seam or the lid gasket?

Lots of questions -sorry.

The seals leaked on BOTH bags. I can only speak to my experiences with these on my GS. The leaking seals seemed to be a reoccurring complaint on the GS forums. By all means, if you like them, buy them. For what they charged me and what I got....then my first trip with wet gear from leaking bags....I will never buy them again. The installation instructions sucked as well but I understand they have a CD.

These things are always a trade off. More space=big, clunky looking panniers. There's no way around it, unfortunately. The S10 is going to be my sure footed mule that can get me to some cool places, just like my V Strom did. When I get to where I want to be, I want to be able to pitch my 3 person tent, Kelty Wing Tarp, set up my Mountain Hardwear down bag, Exped mat, get the fire going, light the propane camp lantern, break out the wok, the chow, the tunes, the cards and the beverages and get to it! I'm one sick puppy! Ha ha!

Thankfully I ride with like minded individuals. You should see the stuff "they", bring along (portable shower-WTF?), I thought we were supposed to be "roughing", it.

I know, I know, I should just stay in a motel, but I'm an outdoor lover that loves fighting off the raccoons, bears, bugs, weather and other stuff, while enjoying the serenity of nature and some of the decadent trappings of "civilization".

It's all about personal choice; As an ex-backpacker, I like to pack light (less weight to carry on my back). A 1.5lb solo tent, down bag, backpacker pad, single stove, stainless cup, titanium spork.....and I'm packed. I keep an extra set of clean clothes...and by day 5...I can be a little...well, the raccoons hold their noses....I stay in a motel to shower and wash the clothes before heading home....the one time I didn't my wife wouldn't let me in the house until she had hosed me off in the driveway. My one luxury is a 6 ounce chair that fits my pad so I can sit and relax at the end of day.

I like the concept of the top bag, but only for storing my helmet and gloves when I'm parked. use a soft tail bag for longer trips, just to keep my stove and food.

For folk concerned about weight...check out "fast pack" backpacking equipment. Be forewarned...you do pay a premium for light equipment....though there are deals to be had.

I also have had the Jesse bags on my 1996 BMW R1100GS since new and I now have 111,000 miles on the bike and bags with no leaks or failures. They are GREAT BAGS and they will be my first purchase for my S 10 when it arrives!

Jakeboy, you sound like my kinda camper!! :D

I've had two sets of Jessies and love em. Take hits really well and (in my case) have remained solid and waterproof. (If you've ever ridden through (or tried too... ???) a desert thunderstorm or a New Mexico monsoon that's saying a lot...) In both cases sucky installation instructions and very fiddly to get the brackets mounted, but after it was all done I couldn't be happier. I also appreciate their narrow profile as compared with otherbags. My experience was with the Odyssey's. YMMV

I'm with you guys! I generally bring too much along, but since I only ride solo I always have enough room. I've never done a trip on dirt roads though, so that may change at some point.

Jesse Safari / Quick Lock

The Jesse Bags are growing on me.

I see for the 1200 GS they offer a Safari system with "Quick Lock" connection.

Anyone have any experience with this Quick Lock mount? Seems hard to believe a mounting system that would support those huge bags and all the crap someone might stuff in theme could utilize 2 pins that look to be about 3" apart near the top front of the luggage. Just seems prone to failure to me. But then again every time I fy I am amazed that the weight of an airplane can be supported on the landing gear that just looks to be so undersized for it's purpose. (Late note - I just read the instructions for installation - the system uses additional support on the opposite end of the bag and a license plate bracket.)

The Safari bags in the size they show for the F800 - their 9" bags, in black with the Quick Lock system would be the bee's knees for me. But they don't show the 9" bags with the Quick Lock. They only show the elephantine 11.5" bags with the Quick Lock!!! (Seems it should be the other way round.)

The Quick Lock mounts are pretty slick and if they work as indicated preclude the need for using the passenger pegs to mount the bags.
