Caution, Long!

Had an accident and had to replace my Jesse Luggage Odyssey's panniers. I saw on their website that they now had Challenger and Odyssey series Panniers.
When I called to ask what the differences were I was told the Odyssey's are no longer available or being made. I then asked what the differences were between the Odyssey's and the Challengers and was told they had redesigned the lids so they were not as tall and they had reduced the angles on the bottom of the cases. I asked if there were any differences to the mounting since I saw there was different hardware and was told just the hardware had changed.

When I went to install them, found that the front of the right Jesse pannier now interfered with the right side passenger peg, even with the pannier mounted as far back as you can get it, you could not put the peg back. (See pics.) Compared the mounting positions of the hardware between the Odyssey's and the Challengers and found the lower Delrin mounting had been moved back 3", as you may know, the mounting rack consists of two oblong loops offset by 3" so you can move the pannier forward or back about 12 " to balance the load on your bike. (One of the features that differentiates Jesse from other pannier suppliers) That capability was no longer there. with the passenger peg extended it only gave you room to move it about 2" from the farthest back position and you loose the ability to carry a passenger since the pannier is now against to peg.

Contacted Jesse luggage and was told they would look into it, since they had a Tenere there they were installing a set of Challenger panniers on. They got back to me later that day and confirmed they found the same issue. They told me the only options were to grind off the end of the passenger peg so it could clear the Jesse pannier, or I or they could re-drill and relocate the bottom mounting Delrin 3" forward like where it was mounted on the Odyssey's. I told them that was an unacceptable solutions since I had paid for New Panniers, not panniers that would now have extra holes in them. They told me they were not willing to make "Custom Panniers" just for me. I was thinking what about all the rest of the Tenere owners that buy your panniers, are they all "Custom" ? They also were not willing to take them back since they had been installed.

This shows the bottom Delrin mounting block as far back as you can get it without re-drilling the pannier.

We had settled on a refund of 200.00 dollars since I was going the re-drill the slotted lower mounting holes for the Delrin mounting blocks instead of me sending them back to them to re-drill them. I was told someone would contact me to arrange for the refund. This has not happened nor have they responded to e-mails and voicemails since.

If you are thinking off buying Panniers from Jesse Luggage be warned, They don not fit the 2014+ Tenere ES any longer.

Well that sucks and thanks for posting a nice description of the issues and changes with pictures.

Question, if you folded the passenger peg down before putting the pannier on the rack, would that allow comfortable use by a passenger?

The panniers do come off easily. It would seem this is a minor issue if you will be riding two up, and an annoying inconvenience if you wanted to pick up a passenger and had been riding solo. That is, if there is enough room for the passenger's foot on the peg with the pannier in place.

With the passenger peg down, there is only 2" for the heel of your passenger, don,t know about your passenger, but mine would say No Way !!!

You can not put the pannier on with the peg up either.

I use my panniers two up...........!

How about just remove the peg? Or remove pannier, fold out peg and reinstall? Problem solved!

Drill new holes and plug the others with rubber hole plugs. They are on the inside and will never be seen. No big deal unless you make it one. Shit happens.

Using you as a guinea pig? Not what I would call good customer service. They should replace them with panniers that work with the bike. Giving up a good reputation to save the cost of a set of panniers doesn't make good business sense.

Instead of drilling more holes in your new panniers, how about installing a set of passenger peg extensions. Moves them down and forward...seems like that might solve the issue?

sorry to see this. But the simple solution of grinding the tip of the foot peg is worth $200 refund.
The 200.00 is for re-drilling 4 slotted mounting holes and the loss of being able to move the paniers forward and back 12" to balance load on bike, if I wanted sturdy stationary panniers I could have spent 700.00 less.

Hey Bob. Can the mounting hardware from the old boxes be made to fit the new ones?

Like I said I am sorry you are going thru this. Now I wonder why the Chinese are kicking our ass big time.....
Out of all the solutions we ,the industrial genii are offering, other than suing those clowns for your $$$$$, seems to be grinding off a little bit of the peg. from the picture seems like only maybe 1/8 "-1/4".
Good Luck.

Just laying the pannier over the peg with it up, you end up cutting 1/2 to 5/8 inch off the peg for it to clear. The other issue is with the peg down, the passenger can only put the heel of their boot on it, there is not enough room to put the heel between the pannier and the peg.

Since you are deciding to re-drill, suggest to cut small aluminum plate and pop rivet in position of the pucks. Silicone in between plate and luggage to seal.

those pegs look like the way to go. Still $55 more bux to fix something they shouldve made right really sux. Not giving him a full refund is bullshit. He got defective panniers. How in the hell are you supposed to know they dont fit if you don't mount them. They'll never see a dime of my money.
