I'm looking to ride up on my recently purchased ST to d.c to visit a friend from college. I looked at taking my bike up or back on the amtrack auto train but nixed that plan after deciding that going to orlando first to load or unload after (was too time restrictive + I read alot of reviews that indicate the train ride is not good) since I need to make it up and back over a three day weekend. I have used all my vacation but want to try a long ride an see some fall foliage.

I plan to leave Jax afternoon Thurs and stop and tent camp someplace near Charleston, SC. Then ride on up on I95 on Friday to d.c. to make time

I will leave d.c sat after brunch and maybe take the scenic tour through the middle of the state anddown to near Ashville nc and tent camp someplace. Then again through the middle of s.c and Ga on into Jax sunday.

Any tips for routes are appreciated. I have been up to the Fontana dam area and dragon a few times and used to live in D.C area so am familiar with the leaf peeper traffic that time of year on the VA/NC skyway.

Never been there but have always wanted to do the East Coast. This would be the general route. I am sure you can get closer at some junctions. Actually many years ago I was in Charleston and Myrtle Beach.

I'd go through Charlotte or Greensboro, then up some BRP and in (or out) Skyline drive. That's how I started my summer trip this year, and it was lots more fun than riding on 95. Might take longer, though.

I can't get my spotwalla page to post right. PM me if you want.

Thanks for the info. I'm looking at a run up I95 there and then a more tour back hwy route for the return.

Went up I95 Jax to DC - took 12 hrs but weather was great.
Spend night at my buddies place then on I64 to I81 to I77 - camped out at Norman Lake State Park near Charlotte.
Then I 77 to I26 to I95 back to Jax.
Long ride over 3 days.

Leaves were pre-peak mostly.

It was my 1st long ride on the ST. Its a 2013 and doesn't have a cruise control (it does have a throttle lock). Also only a 5 gallon tank - range on the hwy with bags was only ~160 miles. I am loving the bike but am considering an upgrade to a 2016.
