Yep, changing coolant, a snap. motor oil and filter, a breeze, final drive gear oil a walk on the beach.... putting the XXDGKOXZXXXZZZZ!!!!! left side cowling back on.... I'm 5 hours in and quite unhappy.

Two screws just will not cooperate. When I try to thread them without the cowl in place they are a little picky, but go fine. With the cowl in place, looking with a flashlight, everything looks great, all lined up, but no joy. Yes, the "projections 'a'" are in the "grommets 'b.'"

This is the wife's bike, 2012 Super Tenere.

I feel your pain. I’ve had mine 5 years and have hell on two of them. The last time I just gave up and rode it. When I finally decided to try again. I got a screw driver or sumthin and stuck it behind the back and pushed out a little and they went in first try. Mite have just got lucky.

What you will find is that the 'nut spring' (90183-050A6-00 ) sometimes gets loose or pushed back, just replace the offending part and watch how easily the 1/2 turn screws then work.

I don't think they have nut springs on the left side. I think I'm gonna change the ones with nut springs on the right side too. They are getting to be a pain. thanx for the part number

You might try aligning the nut with a toothpick or icepick, pressing the panel to touch the back one, then hold that pressure while starting the screw.

I had the same issue yesterday, I found trying to put the bolt in at an angle was enough for it to get started and all was good, very frustrating though!

I must be lucky, the cowlings line up and bolts go right in for me every time. I have more trouble with the right side quick release type than the left side threaded bolts. I would just prefer regular threaded bolts everywhere.

I have this same problem nearly every time. It's very frustrating.

IIRC, I think what happens is that the screw pushes the the threaded spring clip away, rather than engaging. If you can get a finger or some other tool behind the clip to resist the force of the screw pushing off of it, it'll catch. I've also run a tap thru the threads and used brand new screws and had the same problem, so I assume it's not a thread problem.

Pro tip: There's one screw on the left fairing that doesn't need to come off to remove the fairing, and it's the hardest one to get started, IME. It's on the leading/ forward edge of the fairing, in the center of its height - right at the parting line between the upper and lower fairing pcs - just in front of the insert piece with the vent holes on it.

I swapped this screw with one which is otherwise identical, but painted black (from somewhere under the fairing). That way, I remember which one it is and never take it off. The whole left side fairing assembly will come off in one piece if you leave this screw in. If you ever need to seperate the two halves of the left fairing, it's much easier to do with it off the bike.

If that's the screw that's giving you trouble, pull the whole thing off again, install that screw, then re-install the whole fairing as one piece.

After you do this....let us know if all fits like it should. Don't know why they didn't make it the same for ALL the cowling screws!!!???!!!
I swear I've spent a good 45 minutes a time or two getting those screws to thread!!! For some reason lately I've been successful. I don't know if I just got used to the feel?
