Hey hey
So in the last 3 weeks my turn signal switch has been intermittently acting up.
I'm having troubles turning on the RHS turn signals. It was failing to turn on just once in a while and has progressively been getting worse until It now fails 99% of the time.
Flicking to the Left is not a problem. It is flicking to the right that is the issue.
So full disclosure I have the STS Smart Turn Signal fitted. Turn switch is made a into momentary switch by adding some small compressible foam discs so the switch does not stay active/on to one side - it just slides over to one side then back to center.
A couple of days ago I pulled the switch gear apart and dismantled the turn switch mechanism.
I then inspected the workings of the turn switch and how it slides and how the ball detent works.
The internal lever is not a 50/50 swing over the ball detent - ie it is not centered on the lever and swings further one way compared to the other. Turning Right does not feel as good when you turn left.
The turn switch movement was a bit rough, so I cleaned it - was not dirty but did it anyway.
There was no lube in the switch, so I decided to lightly lube the nylon/nylon sliding contact area with some Bell Ray weather proof grease, and put some Dielectric silicon grease on the sliding copper contacts. Switch is now much smother.
Before putting the switch back into the switch gear casing, I tested the turn switch with and without the STS rubber discs. It all operated fine.
Put it back into the switch gear case and button it all up and it still worked fine.
Bike sat till.... Today on the way to work..... all my Right turns failed to work! WTF! Bloody dangerous as we drive on LHS of road here is Oz.
I'm stumped.
Bike has 66,xxx km 2015 S10 ES
I have had the STS installed since 2017.
Going to pull switch apart again tonight.
Maybe there is a hairline crack in the nylon frame and that is just enough to break the elec contacts when it is screwed back in the case.
Maybe I have to JB Weld an internal brace inside to limit movement?
Any other Ideas.
Thanx.
