Is this the correct shaft drive oil?

I went with my son to pick up his new Africa Twin at the Hanover NJ dealer. Turns out to be a Yamaha dealer also. I bought the oil and found out that my FJR calls for a different shaft oil. So, for both, it came out to $34. Not bad for some piece of mind. Great guys at that dealership.

So, the short answer is the Valvoline is ok?
I would bet the yamalube has a different additive package. Probably different base stock as well.
Guys - If you would simply look in your owners manual for what is specified, then look at the Valvoline container, you would know that GL-5 is required and the Valvoline meets the requirement. As do most other 75-90 gear lubes. If you want to go an extra step and buy the Yamalube products like White19, it can't hurt.

But the Super Ten has been in production for about 10 years and we owners have been using everything under the sun in the rear drive, also without hurting it. There are numerous threads about this in this forum going back to at least 2012. Other than occasional seal leaks (which look worse than they are and are easy to address), these are not delicate BMWs and are overbuilt like proverbial brick sh1thouses.

About to pull the trigger on Motul 75w 90 GL-4/GL-5 full synthetic, because I am a Motul fan and run it everywhere in the bike....any issues with this selection?

2016 ST 60th Anniversary, yes the yellow one.

I just use my leftover 10/40 motor oil. Gear oil is not needed. Oil is oil. Shell Rotella in everything. I even freeze it in small containers and use it for grease.
If you are trying for satire, it doesn't work on the internet. And I do not find it useful, helpful or to serve any other purpose.

If you are simply being honest, then you have a great deal to learn. And likely never will.

Make no mistake, gear oil has different properties than engine oil.

I chang mine every other oil change. It doesn’t take much time or oil. My pumpkin gets pretty warm on long rides, from what I’ve read that’s the norm.

Hi Jeff, does your diff stay cool? Mine and most are smoking hot after a short run. Interesting.

Hi SB

I used the appropriate specced mineral diff oil for the first 18k or so miles on my bike, changing it about every 5k miles. The diff to touch was always very hot. I then changed to fully synthetic and it does seem to be considerably cooler to the touch.

It’s certainly not cool, but definitely not as hot.

I’m aware that the touch test isn’t very scientific, but IMO it’s cooler.

Pretty sure doesn't cut it. There is zero place for BS posts in information areas of the forum. In the lounge, fine. No harm. How would you feel if someone actually thought you were serious and burned up their final drive?

The point is to share information and help each other out. You had nothing to contribute, but you had to post anyway. How about not doing that again please.

Thanks, sounds interesting. Would be nice to do a test just for the hell of it. I might even do it.

OK I had a good laugh with that post, especially the part about freezing it to turn it into grease, or "hard oil" as I've always called it.
Yeah I cracked up too. I'm not sure who wouldn't have seen it as a joke. And pretty sure this forum is not Goolge Scholar. Life is it serious. I like the wit and satire.

Hi eric, I'm addressing your argument and not you personally in accordance with forum rules. I found your comments disrespectful of the author and very arrogant. Your argument also assumes you speak for all forum members. You do not speak for me. I can usually pick satire and sarcasm at a good distance. I would be happy to send some tips on how to do this if it will help your demeanour. I enjoy the jokes even in the technical pages. It shows intelligence above the animals that we can do so. I respectfully request that you tone down your critisicm of the members and find a nicer way to address their behaviour if it is not to your standard. Really? Frozen oil to be used as grease?? Haha. A gem. Cheers mate.
