FYI - You may have been at a Starbucks in the Pike Place Market, but it is not the original Starbucks. That location was one block north and outside of the Market boundary.

Ok one final question then.
In 1940 FDR promised no US boys would be going to war. This was a very popular policy. Only 16% even supported send aid to the Uk.
Would this have been a popular GOP view point or Democrat? Or both?
Why was this? Did the US not see the danger from Hitler?

I'm not sure we could even relate, especially in a forum like this and think the Dem vs Republican aspect is moot or trolling so let's skip the political part.

I say we probably can't relate because it would have been only about 20 years after so many Americans had been killed or wounded in WW1 and most of the vets PLUS their families would have equated war with suffering. The country would have felt like it were still in the great depression, meaning people would have been wanting to help ourselves and that we didn't want to spend anything overseas. If I remember my history lessons, there was a very strong isolationist movement at the time in both parties and 1940 would've been an election year. Wiki says Willkie was for sending aid to the UK so all the above probably hurt his chances against FDR.

At that point in history, the U.S. (and elsewhere) were still in the Great Depression. Part of what FDR did was find a balance between fairly strong pro-facist and pro-communist views - that was his mastery with the New Deal. But generally, the U.S. was an isolationist country, other than monkeying around in the Western hemisphere, and maybe the Philippines, though those were all abstractions with much of the populace. It took a direct attack (Pearl Harbor) to get things moving, though I guarantee you the federal government already had plans to enter WWII well before that.

It asks whether to keep this thread open or close it and go back to no politics anywhere?
So far there are 9 for closing and none for keeping it.
Currently on Tapatalk also so I cannot view the poll but my guess is half or more of those 9 votes are frequent posters in this thread. LOL LOL

DISCLAIMER. PLEASE DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE:

From a previous thread:

“….Not sure I see how this thread is all that different from the COVID-19 thread.

A topic which has every possible opinion out there held by different members. Often inspiring passionate thread writing.

I stopped reading the COVID-19 thread months ago. I was learning far too much about the thought process of some members, and that was a bad thing. It's been a good thread not to visit.

I certainly have no justification to tell anyone why they cannot have a COVID-19 thread just because I don't care for how some members come across in that thread. I can and do ignore it. Makes me happy to do so.

So why does the mere existence of a thread on this topic, that is strongly moderated to keep it on topic and positive for those who want to participate in a positive way, need to generate such animosity?

Why is shutting down discussion on a topic you don't like the preferred course of action as opposed to not reading a particular thread? Seems like an awful lot of that happening in the world these days.

_______________________________________________________________

AGAIN, PLEASE DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE:

1a) America is not a tin pot country whose politricks have no direct impact worldwide. If it was just internal, such as the seemingly indiscriminate crackdown killings of drug dealers here in Phils, I would agree, although I would always promote free speech.

1b) However, what happens in the US doesn’t stay in the US. It spills over. The reasons for local and world policing: from Ghadaffi in Libya;, to Iran; Saddam in Iraq; Syria; to the current massive military arms sales to “allies” the Middle East; spread of BLM demonstrations and attempted overthrow of the Capitol building is quite disturbing to those watching worldwide as well. With respect, complaining about one whilst praising the other seems disingenuous. If it affects all, then surely everyone should respectfully be allowed to pass comment.

2a) As I have stated a number of times, the majority of people in the US and worldwide, are peaceful, level-headed people, with no wish to see anything other than harmony and friendliness, despite differences.

2b) However, on Trump, I and many others see the ratcheting up, the media dumbing down of outright his lies and public indifference with regard to:

1) Obama’s birth certificate ‘’birther’’ accusation (of which there was no evidence, except his colour apparently)

2) His conduct around women (if he had spoken or expected to treat any of our female relatives in that way, well…)

3) Kellyanne Conway defending the false statement about the attendance numbers of Trump's inauguration as President of the United States. This "Alternative facts" set up the blueprint for the other 36,000 lies that followed, whilst all the while DT doubled down on the FNs media. This, along with DTs affirmation, led to Alex Jones InfoWars and other conspiracy theories gaining traction (Alex famously stated that Sandy Hook School, where a shooter killed 20 children and six adults, was a hoax)…..

Here is what much of the world is thinking about what led up to the Capitol situation…Many blame the ratcheting of one man….from banks and other businesses, to an insignificant 60 year old:

I had to have a long, hard think before posting this. I certainly do not want to upset anyone, but we all differ and those differences are who we are. I did not initially vote as I realise I caused some of the upset by not posting with more respect for opposing views – something I again apologise for – but it was not intentional and now I have done so.

The reason I have voted for the post remaining is for the previous post I attached at the start of this message and that I feel the political post should remain and should be EXPANDED to a world 1st amendment post, or similar, as that is inclusive of all. It should - like the gun post - have a disclaimer that has certain provisos of which we can all agree on (something that I feel Checkwrecks is particularly adept at) and go from there. Perhaps with addendums as and when necessary.

I never entered into the gun post until today as, when I initially read the disclaimer, I did not feel it was for me for the very reasons stated by Checkwrecks in the preamble. I have looked through it this morning and was surprised there are some great posts, including the guns btw, with some great anecdotes, history and historical references (my Grandfather worked for Royal Enfield), personal observations and also personal opinions expressed respectfully.

I also had the very same pleasant surprising experience when I checked a gun seller’s website recently. I had read that they had their site removed by a huge ISP for certain content. Being inquisitive by nature, and not wanting second hand news, I checked. All I could see was reasonable, understandable and positive reactions to the awful subject that I was viewing and being commented on - completely contrary to what was suggested by the ISP.

I hope in my way of writing I have not upset anyone as that is not my intention. (EDIT: on that note, please report to Checkwrecks, etc, if anything comes across wrongly and please remove those parts, or the post if that is the case)

Long may we be different but collective.

The opinion of foreigners doesn't mean near as much as the opinion citizens. Others opinion of our ammendments don't mean anything to me and a lot of others.

I did intend voting to take this thread down. After all, I have got the answers to the question I originally asked and I never intended for the thread to offend anyone.

But when you read through the posts that have been made it is obvious that along with the angry “how dare you” posts there are a lot that have been carefully considered from people who genuinely wanted to share their opinions.

My friends, that can only be a good thing so I voted to keep the thread in the end.

I agree completely. What actions happen in the US affect you directly and I hope that this chapter brings you all together to forge a better future. It affects us outsiders due to the US presence on the worldwide stage.
