Just so I understand, you're effectively telling the civilian employees of those agencies you hope they're without a job because they aren't important to "you". Only in a poorly written circular argument?

Shut down some things that will really make a difference! Oooooookkkk!
Karson: It seems inevitable that this topic would spin out of control, as there are heated feelings surrounding this subject. No one on this forum or across America wants to see people suffering, losing jobs, houses, etc. But the bottom line is that the federal government spends $1 trillion more per year than it takes in, and spends the majority of it on war, interest on previous debt, and the creation of dependence. There is no doubt that one day soon, the people who work for government will have to be fired - many of them. The tax payers cannot pay for them any more! And the government cannot borrow or print after a certain point to pay for them. They had better prepare to find work from another employer, because there simply will not be enough money to pay them.

Some of us posting here are the ones who suffer when government is in full operation. We pay for all this nonsense every year. We get the threatening letters from the IRS, we get audited, we pay and pay, and pay, and still it is not enough! Then the elected reps and president tell us we aren't paying enough, that to want to keep our money is "greedy." I pay a 45% combined federal and state tax rate. That is outrageous by any standard.

I pay my own payroll tax, SS tax, and medicare tax. I pay my health insurance premium of $1,700 per month out of my own pocket. Every letter I write to more than 25 clients has to have a compliance review to make sure I am abiding by the rules set by FINRA and the SEC. I and my secretary have been fingerprinted to do our jobs. Every stock trade I place needs paperwork filled out or I can get fined. I got an in-office audit by FINRA for 4 days last year, and the overarching attitude of the compliance examiner was that I was probably doing something wrong, she just needed to find out what it was. I cannot keep a client check for more than 24 hours while waiting for transaction "approval", or I have to return it to them or - get this - I Fedex it back to my own office for $21 just so I comply with their rules about the check having to leave my office within 24 hours. I suffer every year due to the buffoons in Washington.

So when those retards in Washington actually screw up so badly that they cannot even keep the doors open for a few weeks, I honestly breathe a sigh of relief. When they take vacations, breaks, recesses, I rejoice. I can't state it any other way, but I am totally fed up with government.

Ramble all you want yes I am a contractor for the DOE (Department Of Energy) cleaning up Nuke waste so your kids don't have to, I just want to know the impact not your political views.
Your not being effected? thats fantastic but I like to work like I was raised to do not sit around collect a welfare check have more children so to collect more Government favors dream of utopia and do nothing but consume oxygen.
I once was one who was hoping the world would have a story book ending but this is not to be.

Yes i agree we need to thin the heard of waste like a million bucks on why Mentos makes Diet soda go critical and why Diet coke reacts better to the chemical reaction.

Move on or just close this thread please... ::007::

These are not my neighbors, but I do personally know two families living within an easy walk of my house who are hurting as badly. They have kids and HAVE to work without paychecks. Neighbors have stepped in to help with the kids during the day. There are a number of other 2-Govt households in the neighborhood, in which both parents are at home.

So while people are protesting for more Government services to be opened, they aren't recognizing that every time something happens (parklands, air traffic, civilian DoD, etc) it's being paid for not by the Government, but by the unpaid Government employees who make it happen by adding to our commuting costs and hoping to be repaid.

And to Mark, I have a brother in law who owns a small brokerage (Life Planning) office in Pensacola. You sound a lot like him in your sentiments and your "industry" does have a LOT of costs and oversight. I agree that a number of them are incredibly dumb, probably started shut the barn door after losses to a few crooks and scammers. A few bad apples versus all the people like you, who are truly trying to help folks and eek out a living.

What my brother in law understands though is that more than anything our form of Government has historically given us a stable economy. Without it - well - look at the African photo I posted. Your client base would be almost non-existant.

The true government employes get furloughed contractors get laid off with no hope of getting back pay, if you have any vacation time you get to use that first before heading to the unemployment office if your company is still on the map.
Some folks are having a hard time getting unemployment due to the company has completely folded.

Yes I have Fed and contractor friends here in town waiting for the word to stay home. They are deserving dedicated workers looking after the safety of us all.

I can only hope they choose better in the next election cycle.

Personally, I'm relieved and enlightened by the tone and discussion in this thread. ::020:: It makes me hopeful and proud.

BTW - the enemy has always been the manifestation of greed, hatred and ignorance - not each other.

I can only hope we learn a collective lesson in this country and not make this lunacy SOP. That's what I want for Christmas please.

The Des Moines CBS affiliate news station came out over Columbus Day to try and snap some pictures for a piece they were putting together. Even though I'm still stuck to come in, without actual scientists and researchers doing experiments, not a whole lot of stuff I can do from an IT side...

http://www.kcci.com/news/central-iowa/usda-scientists-forbidden-from-entering-lab-during-government-shutdown/-/9357080/22436694/-/g6750nz/-/index.html

Looking like Congress is really going to string this thing out. My guess is they pass a debt ceiling measure before the deadline then revisit reopening the government in the days/weeks ahead.

Word on the street is, and I haven't actually looked, is that even if they opened the government today & had funding, the earliest we'd get a normal paycheck is in 4 weeks. Can anyone confirm or deny that theory? Along those lines, I heard something about the backpay for "essential" employees isn't likely to come right away and might be some time yet...

Well we all got our letters today. I will be burning my accrued vacation until this settles. Thankfully I have a lot saved up. Sadly most of my coworkers don't and will have to use up all their PL before they can apply for unemployment. And there is no recovery or payback, period.

I like to think that I and many others in the nuclear research fields (and people like Ramseybella) are not sucking off the governments hind teat but are providing a valuable service to both the USA and the world. We shutdown tomorrow and stop producing the medical isotopes that may have saved the lives of people you all may know. Some radioisotopes have short lifespans of usability. Ce la vie. Research for many universities and even some countries also get put on hold.

Who really is being affected by the actions of a few people who themselves are completely isolated from the average citizen of this country?

No tit sucking going on in my woods, the Milk gets dried up by the fat cats making the wasted money.
It's the same thing some Collage Genius wants to make a name and decides to revamp something that is already working and spends a shit load of cash to find out it was a waste of time.

Looks like they will pass something to end the mess for at least now. Who knows how long till we get income sorted, whether we can cash in some annual leave, etc.

And again, I agree with Mark and numerous others that the expenditures need to be reduced.

BUT

Unfortunately, we will be here again if the same extremist brinkmanship politicians who will not compromise or play with others are voted back in. We the voters listened to the campaign pitches and voted these people into office.

This applies both to the left and right, as it takes TWO to communicate. We are paying them to legislate, which requires communication and negotiation. If the person representing YOU can't do their job, if they are such a total idealist that they are a road block, for Heavens' sake then FIRE them at the next election.

Midterm elections will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 - hold them accountable with your vote.

I know it sounds cliche, but with Congress' ability to basically protect themselves and create their own rules, this is our best shot.

This video catches the GOP basically changing rules on the fly on Oct 12th, preventing any GOP member from bringing a vote up. Now only the Majority leader has that privilege.

To reiterate, I'm sure Dems are equally to blame in other issues, but this is relevant to the shutdown and the games they're able to manipulate on the tip of a hat.

It gets interesting around 1:10.

The GOP's little rule change they hoped you wouldn't notice

Looking from outside, and getting the goods, seems like the whole problem is the Dems.
Perhaps. But I was re-reading an online piece in the New York Times where they interviewed a Dem Senator from Virginia(I believe), where he stated both house and senate Dems tried to thwart this dilemma back in March.

Ahh - found it.

Senator Tim Kaine, Democrat of Virginia, noted that House and Senate Democrats had been pressing for a conference committee to negotiate a budget for the 2014 fiscal year since March but had been “blocked by Republicans 18 times in the last six months.”
This is not about elephant vs donkey at this point. It's about $$$ and power. This issue easily goes beyond Obamacare. Think about it...

If Congress can default on our debts to overturn ANY existing law, then NO law is really law.

The Democrats had no choice but to take it all the way. If they let it go to the brink and then gave in, the "gubmint baaaad, durka durka... Tea Partiers" effectively learn they can do it every time.

At that point forward, whenever EITHER PARTY wanted to apply some political heat they would have the tool available to do so. It was vitally necessary this new "brinkmanship" tool fail. It had to.

The system is equally broken on both sides. We'll see what this short stopgap gave us, I'm betting nada.
