Is Motul 5100 same as Yamalube 10/40.

Isn’t this oil meant for diesel only? That first C at all the mentioned API grades stands for “combustion”. Meaning made for engines that ignite by combustion. “S” grade oils are for spark ignited engines. Then the composition of the oil would be unsuitable.

anyone got more facts?

Stefan.

Why would you use an oil designed for Diesel engines in a petrol engine?

Exactly what i stated in post #41.

Many things have multiple users. Old wood workers trick. Us charcoal lighter fluid instead of mineral spirits. Same shit just a lot cheaper. I used 2 oils not within spec to fix my lawn mower. These guys in two different buildings design their engines and oils. Once the two are produced some one puts on a couple100k on them then we know if we have a winning combo or not. The additives in modern oil have doubled or tripled the life of engines.

I’ve only used yamalube in my bike, because it’s the correct spec and the shop is nearby. Would be happy to use another brand as long as the specs are correct. Personally I’d only use motorcycle specific oil.

If someone asked, I’d say check the handbook and note the oil spec recommendations. Other than that, I couldn’t care less what others choose to put in their bikes.

Bit of a debate from my question which is great, it was a well established dealer who told me this, as I say I have used Yamalube in my S10 for 32,000 miles, changing every 5000 miles with no problems, when 1989 Yamaha 1000 EXUP came out it was"Motul oil only",I am no oil expert but have got a Aprilia 1000 which has been thrashed from new on Castrol 10/40,engine and box like new, a 2002 Yamaha R1 on Motul with no ill effects, I will listen to the guys that have done the miles, just hate getting ripped off if the stuff is the same just in a different container, Thanks for everyone's input, for ther record I have never put Fully synthetic oil in any motorcycle including 2 BMW 1100GS,s which did 120,000 miles on Castrol 10/40,so we still dont know the answer to my question,we need someone who works for Motul or Yamaha to comment..

Run the oil/tires/filters/spark plugs/etc that make you sleep comfortably at night.

I have a lot of my own evidence of how my choice of oil has performed for me in my motorcycles so I will continue to use it. I will always recommend that someone who brings a motorcycle to me should use what their manual dictates. If asked what I use, I am not afraid to say but will suggest differing from the manual will be at their own discretion.

Oil threads are almost as inflammatory as political or religious threads :D

@tntmo I like how you stated it. Do what makes you sleep comfortably at night. And when in doubt, follow the manual. (I'm extrapolating a bit, hope I'm not putting words in your mouth)

If anyone is really keen, they'd run 2 oils in similar circumstances back to back and send both off for used oil analysis and compare the results. :)

I guess I must have stated it clearly, you picked up what I was putting down.
Nobody can say that "my bike failed because I used such and such oil" because you can't prove that running any other oil would have prevented the failure. You can speculate that it was the cause, but that's about it.

P.S., everyone get out and vote!! :D

Probably semantics, but is oil that meets JASON MA really diesel oil? I mean it may say diesel on the front, but if it meets motorcycle specs, that's really just a label or marketing :)

I mean, it comes down mostly to
- Does the oil have additives that damage a motocycles wet clutch?
- Does it resist shearing and breaking down too fast?
