So far the trip has been mostly going well, about another 1,300 mile to Tuktoyaktuk, but most likely the last 1,300 miles will be the most challenging.

Well my friend with the BMW broke down yesterday 200 miles before Whitehorse, he has AAA towing with a 200 mile limit so today the bike is getting towed to Yukon Yamaha but they are closed until Tuesday. It could be something as simple as a battery failure or something much more expensive.

Well we bought a new battery today at Canadian Tire, the bike started rite up and everything seems to work like it should. Tomorrow one of the Canadian tire guys said he would bring a volt meter to work with him so he can check if the charging system is working.

Well the BMW’s charging system ain’t working and the nearest dealer is 1,100 miles away. So today we bought a deep cycle marine battery and mounted it behind the seat and hooked it up using 4 foot battery cables, hopefully it will work well enough to ride it home to California.

:eek::mad:.
This is really a pita, when something like this happens, on a long trip.
Only 800 miles from Tuktoyaktuk but because of the breakdown we are all giving up for this year, hopefully we will have better luck if we ever attempt it again, I’m just thankful it broke down where it did.

Yea, a bummer for sure but DON'T give up on your dream. From experience your regret it later.

Get back, reorganize and make another run for it. ;)

The BMW seemed to be working fine with our jury rigging but we loaded it and Jeff on a boat to Bellingham Wa yesterday, $1500 for the 3 day ride.

This is unbelievable but While the bike was broke down we met the former mayor of Tuktoyaktuk along with his wife and daughter, was very interesting talking to them, he gave us about a foot of the red ribbon from when the new road was opened, he said they have been averaging about 15 motor homes per day and about 25 motorcycles.

We rode in a LOT of smoke yesterday, some small town we stopped in for gas at 4pm all the street lights were on because the smoke made it seem like night time, I wanted to get a room there but let my buddy talk me into another 100 miles to Prince George, well when we got to Prince George no rooms available because the firefighters and evacuees had them all so we had to ride another 70 miles south to Quesnel to get a room, I really don’t like riding after dark in moose country but thankfully we made it fine.

I will be calling the Yamaha dealer in Kalispell at 8:30 when they open, it’s only 125 miles up there so if they have the bearings in stock I will ride my buddies KTM up there to get them. If that doesn’t workout there an outfit in Bonner’s Ferry Idaho with the bearing kit listed on eBay .

The kicker is that Japanese bearings and seals are some of the best made and this has little to do with whatever make of bike they are in.
fwiw, I've had them go bad with a lot less miles on a Ducati ST2, Honda 650 Nighthawk, and KLR. The Honda and Kaw I found in the garage during regular maintenance. The Duc started grinding while commuting home one evening.

Any brand of sealed ball bearing will work, the right side bearing measures 22 X 44 X 12 mm wide. The generic number would be 60/22 2rs.
I don't know the size of the left bearing, but it is different than the right.
