Good Evening all,
Hope you are all well in these interesting times. Just a quick hello. I am a long time rider and mulling over getting another bike. Currently got a 10 plate Varadero which is a fine machine and I have been having some fun with it for about 6 years now. I have just recently started thinking about the 1200 so interested to read up about it and find the good, bad and ugly. I was originally thinking about a ,coughGScough, sorry, something in my throat there, but the price, even secondhand I find difficult to swallow And to be honest fuel range on the standard isn’t enough for my liking.
If the Varadero was shaft drive and had cruise control I probably wouldn’t even think about getting rid of it. I tend to do long trips, should have been in France this week, but circumstances and Covid conspired against me. So Ireland instead.
It will probably take me a year to convince myself that I need a new bike, but, so begins the process. I hadn’t given the yam any thought but, it seems to be ticking an awful lot of boxes.
so there you are. That’s me.
look forward to reading a lot on the 1200, mostly good I hope.

Welcome from Texas. Most of the bike mags don't give it much thought either. It ticks all my boxes; my favorite bike ever. I recommend an ES version. There's a guy that reviews motorcycles, called FortNine. He does a comprehensive review of the Tenere. It may answer some of the questions you have. Here's the video:

I never get tired of watching Ryan F9's videos. He is a master at what he does.

Goodmorning Gloop,

Welcome from The Netherlands, have a look around here. There is plenty info and members to get information from. Just ask the question. I love mine for a lot of reasons, got it three years now and won’t be trading it soon.

Thanks guys For the welcome, yes I have already watched RyanF9'S video. I too am a fan of him. He avoids the gushing that the press writers seem to do and tells it as it is. Much respect for him.

Once I get back to England I will go find a bike shop and have a look see.

From the videos and reading it appears that the sort of things to look at are,
New screen, I'm 6’2” so most standard screens don’t work for me.
Bigger brush guards, again the quote was “ not used to so much air blowing up my sleeve” :D
and a comment about the front brakes being ok but not great? Different pads?
Decent engine bars

Anyway, nothing major there, I shall go for a wander around the forum and see what issues there are and how people overcame them. Plenty of time, I have to convince myself that I need shaft drive and cruise and that it is worth paying the extra money that is welded Into my wallet and refuses to leave. o_O

Welcome to the forum Gloop !
My first Tenere was a 2013, the biggest complaint was no cruise control so at 50;000 miles I traded for a new 2018 Tenere with ES, it was an expensive trade but I’m much happier having cruise control ! There are lots of other minor improvements that actually make it a much better bike than the first generation.

Another welcome from Wales! I have had my 2017 SuperTen for just over 2 years, I have always liked them and then I found this one. If you want an ”adventure” bike that does it all, then look no further. Yes, I have thought about changing mine, but now the lockdown is over in U.K. and I have got more riding time in, I can’t see anything else I would rather be riding. By the way, I am 6’2” and I have just added a cheap eBay flip thingy to the top of my standard screen and it works a treat! The brakes are fine by the way, I have never found mine wanting even when loaded up and on tour.

Welcome Gloop.
I'm also 6'2". I test rode an S10 with a Yamaha Tall screen on a hot day with my mesh jacket and the wind protection was almost too good. I'm thinking of switching to the (included) short screen unless I get used to the tall.
Best of luck with your decision!

Shaft drive and cruise is worth their weight in gold, regardless of whatever bike you choose. And, I'll second the comment from Longdog, the brakes are fine. And, being able to use just the back brake is fantastic for slow technical stuff.

Hello from North Hampshire (Basingstoke area). A mate of mine has a Varedero and he too swears by it. He’s just got an SX too so I guess the Valderedo is in semi retirement now. I ride all year round so my S10 is my winter bike due to its shaft drive and better handling of the muddy flooded winter roads round here.
