Just picked up a 2016 Super Tenere from a dealer. $11k after tax and licensing for a nice clean bike with 29xx miles on it. The only blemish I've found is a small rub mark where the factory hand guard just rubs the tank on full left turn lock.

Givi bags and Madstad windscreen, otherwise all factory. Plans for right now are an ACD skid plate and installing my Baja Designs LED spots. This will be my commuter rig and do trail work. I'll keep my DR350 for more technical trail work.



Looking for any tips and info that I should know. I'd also like to source a preferably digital factory service manual that I can print for the garage and keep on file for research as I do all work myself.

While we're at it can anybody tell me what this connector it?



Couldn't find anything in the owners manual about it and haven't sourced an FSM yet. If it's for optional accessories got a pinout handy?

I'll be doing a bit of electrical work on this bike. There are the previously mentioned spots, adding a dedicated USB charger (on relay-protected key power so as keep parasitic draw away) and I may mount a mobile radio in either a custom made or sourced box (maybe from a police bike?) to run a two meter radio. I do communications for the ADVRider Death Valley Noobs Rally and it would kick some ass to have a real radio in here.

Excuse the excitement, please. I swear I've only had one glass of whiskey so far.

Lots of great info on this site. If you’re gonna take it off road it needs some protection. Ride it and see what you are lacking.

Are you bringing it to Noobs?

They are some sort of diagnostic plugs. Don’t pull power from them.

There is a couple of accessory plugs by the factory tool kit under rh cover. One is for aux lights and the other is for factory heated grips.

Yes, this will be my Noobs steed.

I'll definitely be getting a skid plate right out of the gate. I like rocks and don't think the exhaust pipes or oil filter will agree with sentiment. Crash bars seem like a good idea but I need to look closely as I don't like having huge stickouts.

Nice. Happen to have pinouts of those handy? I did pull that cover and take a look but only as far as to confirm my suspicions that the factory took kit had never even been removed. Not really surprised with a three year old bike with only 2900 miles on it.

The three terminal plug is the aux connector
Red 12v
Black ground
Brown 12v keyed

4 terminal is for factory heated grips

I got a plug in pigtail here: https://electricalconnection.com/index.php/brand/yamaha/yamaha-super-tenere/

These are tucked behind the wiring harness and you have to pull them out but they are there.
They have dummy caps on them with rubber plugs.

BTW http://cycleterminal.com is another good place to get connectors, etc. I don't know yet if they have the ones that Yamaha uses but they do have a lot of other common connectors and are a great resource when you're trying to get a clean wiring project done.

Here is a picture of the dummy cap. If you could get the right metal connectors you could wire this up. I found it easier to buy one already done.

If you ride off road, I would look into a simple ABS mod where you can break the circuit of the ABS and turn it off. It is very unnerving going down a steep spot and having your brakes let go.

I made a dash filler plate to have a place for the ABS cutout switch, usb/voltmeter outlet, aux light switch, and a spare switch for future projects.

There is an inmate here that makes the filler plates and sells them.
Lots of neat ideas and info on here.

Nice, that's pretty much what I was thinking of for switches and the like.

I presume the ABS kill switch kills it globally? One thing I liked about the Africa Twin I rented at DVNR was ABS kill only affected the rear wheel. I'd love to be able to toggle between on, rear, and completely off but don't know if that's even remotely possible.

I haven’t had enough good weather to test this as much as I’d like.
I'd add one thing to that. I'd use a relay and wire it to latch so you can have a momentary switch to kill ABS. Then when you shut the bike off it interrupts power to the relay so opens it back up. If you do it that way you kill ABS when you need to but don't find yourself with no ABS when commuting to work Monday morning because you forgot to turn it back on ;)

Yes I tend to geek out on wiring stuff.

The factory handguard shouldn't rub the tank at full left turn, a bit of adjustment should solve the problem.

Mak10 has hit most of the highlights in regards to your electrical questions, but do check out the tech forums here. As far as selectively disabling ABS, I don’t recall that being possible on the ST, especially given that that the brake system is linked (although it can be overridden by tapping the rear brake pedal first).

I was also in the process of setting up a radio on my bike before life got in the way. I was planning on a Kenwood handheld mounted to the plate on an RKA tank bag, and tied to the Montana for the GPS functionality. I know Yaesu makes some small radios that might be able to be tucked in to a nook or cranny on the bike, but the way everything is packaged doesn’t leave much room for anything!
