What's a CO?

Carbon monoxide, which is a by-product of burning the mixture of fuel and air in the engine.

The amount of carbon monoxide in the exhaust gas is an indication of how rich or lean the fuel mixture is. Most vehicles are delivered with very lean fuel-air mixtures to meet EPA pollution requirements, even though doing so may be at the cost of the engine running smoothly when it is accelerating, especially from idle. Since the amount of carbon monoxide (and therefore the fuel-air mixture) in the exhaust can be adjusted in the Gen1 bikes (and non-US bikes) an owner can make the engine run a bit smoother.

The adjustment is what the subject of this thread is about. A nice aspect is that it can be reverted back to how you found it if you simply write down the number which it displays when you begin.

Adjusted the CO setting on my 2017 today.
It has to be done at a Yamaha dealer.
I hooked up the Diagnostic tool [from bike to computer]
I was talking to a Yamaha RTA at the time and he said to set it at +45 on both. He said that is about a 4% gain in CO.
He said it is possible to go as high as +130 on these bikes and that would be about an 8% gain in CO. but that is to high.
I took it for a short ride and it was very smooth I'll find out more on a long ride after work.

Yes, it's a genuine Yamaha service manual for model years 2014-2016.

There is a 6 step procedure on page 8-35 that ends with this:

TIP
If ECU was selected, press the TCS button to switch the display between "DIAG" and "CO".

I followed the procedure but "CO" was never displayed. It may be available in non US models, though, I can't say.
I can confirm it. The "CO" menu is not available on the Gen 2 2015 California model. Either purposely disabled or another sequence needed to get to it.

The GEN1 USA models requires that the Vehicle Down sensor (located under the passenger seat), be grounded before the CO can be access. I did confirmed it when I was working on a USA model belonging to a friend. (I worked on Japan, Aussie, UK and US spec S10s for CO and TB sync ... and the US one always have to be special :) ) I use a LED with pins, using 1 of the pin to poke pass the waterproof rubber bungs and then grounding it with a jumper cable. Well, that worked.

I saw a post somewhere about heavy carbon buildup. Wouldn't a co adjustment possibly make that worse?
I suppose a right fuel-air ratio will do no harm. Overly rich will leave carbon deposits from incomplete combustion. The S10 is lean at low RPM's (to pass emissions), and upping a little CO will probably make it just right. I am on +8 for both (have a akra and a BMC air filter). Arrived at +8 after backing down from a higher value by observing the Fuel Consumption increase. CO at 0 to 8 doesn't seem to have effects on Fuel, but does give better response. I call +8 as my optimum setting.

2ddaMax, can you please elaborate on grounding the tip-over sensor?

I asked about the details of grounding the tip-over sensor with an LED. I guess, it is a red herring, since you mentioned you did on a non-US model. As suggested earlier, the US models have this option removed from the menu starting with 2015 models.

My bad, sorry. For the lack of having pictures, let me describe what needs to be done.

1. So the Mint Green wire is the Ground cable according to the 1st Post.
2. Note the rubber bungs that is on the Mint Green wire.
3. Find a wire, a thin one but sturdy enough that it does not bend as you slide it between the rubber bung and the connector plastics, all the way in.
4. If you have a Ohm meter, check the continuity with the chassis to ensure the wire is making contact.

I use a LED with the 2 wire pins as that was what I have at my disposal. Paper clips may be too thick.

Did you mean for US spec GEN2 models?

I manage to do the CO for a GEN2, Japan spec.

I have a Ge2 and I can access CO settings from the dash. Haven't changed them from zero yet though

Nelso, try 20.
Even "better", 45.
I'm 45 for a year now. Coastal area, Cape Town.
No more misfires, no more hiccups, no off-idle stumble and pulls like a dozer.
Still sock ECU, CAT.

20 or 45??

Wow, big numbers. Can do the same thing on Gen1 and Gen 2?

How's the fuel economy now?
