Hi, as above really.

New member (no longer a lurker) and many thanks to admin for sorting out my ability to access the forum - there appeared to be a ccouple of issues but all is good now.

Me:-
Live near Reading in Berkshire
Just turned 60
Currently ride Versys 650
Time to change up so.......

S10 or Africa Twin or Africa Twin As or Multistrada 950? 1260? or KTM 1090r/a or 1290 or, or, or??

My riding :- fair weather Sunday blasts with mates, 3 or 4 long trips per annum Black Forest/Scotland/Lake District, Peak District/Wales/Pennines/Pyrennees (is that spelt right?)

So far all on tarmac, apart from an accidental detour in Scotland which took us down a very rough unmade 5 miles of single track across the floor of a glen and really upset my mate on his 1098 Ducati :).

Now looking to start doing some softroading and bigger trips whilst still having something which can be enjoyed for Sunday blasts.

Hence looking at the S10.

Welcome from Swansea! The key is test ride test ride and test ride. I've had my S10 for nearly 3yrs and I love it BUT when I test rode one it didn't light a fire for me but I'd read enough to know it was going to.get better the more I rode it and it certainly has. Amazing reliability, comfy and great on fuel. Enjoy the new bike hunt!

Hi Scorpio58, I came to the SuperTen from a Versys1000, a bike I thought I’d never sell but I’d always admired the SuperTen and I’ve had mine since 1st. August 2018. I do two European trips each summer and I did. 2000 mile trip through Holland, Germany and Poland on my Versys in May so I had the opportunity to do a similar trip during the first week of October, so a back to back impression.

The Versys has a magnificent motor but the SuperTen is perhaps more relaxed in the way it does things. The SuperTen also has lighter, more precise steering than the Versys and more room to stretch your legs. I think the SuperTen will suite you perfectly. By the way, I met two separate groups of German motorcyclists. In each groups, they were all on BMW GS models and in each groups, there was a solitary SuperTen. Each group said the SuperTen was the better bike, more reliable with no issues while the BMWs had all been back to the dealers for warranty work.

Hi Scorpio58, welcome from Switzerland, agree with what yoyo said, takes a while to get to like it, a 'slow burn' rather than an instant 'fire'. But I've had two of them, so I must have a problem. Ex-Windsor myself............

Hi Scorpio and welcome.

I'm a similar age to you and we appear to enjoy similar bike needs.

My advice, if you go down the Super Tenere route, go for a 2014 onwards Gen 2. It's a more refined and improved version of the Gen 1, with a fair few upgrades. Visually the easiest want to tell them apart is the dash, the earlier having a part analog dash with a needle tacho. The Gen 2 is fully digital.

My Gen 1 has been flawless in the time I've owned it, 2 and a half years and 20k miles, including 4 European trips and a week in Scotland. One of the euro trips was 5000 miles, UK to Brno, then Croatia, Slovenia across to Spain and home through France, all without any issues and IIRC returning just over 50mpg across the trip.

The not so good bits, it's heavy, very heavy, especially loaded up. Absolutely fine when riding, but paddling around car parks and such, or pulling out of parking spaces, it's a lump! Rear shock isn't really up to 2 up or fully loaded. Brakes IMO are a little lacking, although a pad change has improved. Stock panniers are average at best, in future I'll try and get by with a top box, tank bag and a rear seat bag, the panniers sit way out and affect speed, handling and economy too much, perhaps some of the after market versions are better.

Good bits, it handles very well for such a big bike, it has an unbreakable feel about it, riding position is very good, true 200 mile plus tank range, easy to work on, with the winglets and one of those screen top spoiler thingys, wind protection/turbulence is really good.

Welcome from Texas. I've been riding litre bikes since '86, so I do not agree that the Tenere is heavy. I have a Gen II ES. So, when my wife and I ride, and our combined weight is at/over the GVWR, I just adjust the suspension to "setting X". It handles the max load better than I thought it would; hardly noticeable in my opinion. I am admittedly a biased Yamaha fan, but I have put on about a 100k miles between a BMW RT and a Honda ST 1300. Disappointed in the long run with the Beemer; very satisfied with the Honda. The Tenere is my favorite ever. It can embarrass sportbikes in the curves, you can load it like a pack mule, and you do not have stay on the tarmac. Good luck in your search....and don't forget about the Triumph Tiger(s).

Many thanks for the welcomes and observations on the S10.

I agree with "test ride, test ride" but I'm struggling to find a test ride on one.

KTM, Africa Twin, Multistrada no problem, loads of options for test rides fairly local to me but not the S10.

Must persevere.

Welcome aboard from just north of Washington DC.
The choices are so different that a test ride on each ought to make up your mind pretty quick.
Aren't choices great!!!???
