Good morning gents and ladies, I have a quandry.

I get all geared up this morning, pull the bike out, put the key in and turn the ignition on, stab the starter button and - nothing.

The fuel pump does not cycle when you turn the key on. The starter button does not attempt to turn the starter.

The insturments get power, and the lights. I cycled the kill switch, checked the fuses, made sure it was in neutral and even pulled the clutch a couple times.
Where should I start looking when I get home from work?

Thanks!

2012, 15K miles. Stock battery. Did not yet check any connections, but the solenoid didn't even click like it was trying to turn. Press the starter button and nothing.

Right, so this afternoon, I'm goin to attack it thus:
try to jump start if there are no obvious loose wires.
pull the battery and see if I can recharge it (assuming it's low), reinstall and try again.
jump the starter solenoid to see if it's a switchgear problem (for the starter, wouldn't explain the FI pump)
pop the tank and power the pump directly to see if it will cycle. Anyone know what leads this should be? I assume the pump will be two wire and the sending unit three.
If that fails, I'll probably have to look into when that extended warranty runs or ran out and take it in.

same year as my bike.
your bike has low miles, so if it hasn't been used, or battery tendered on a regular basis, then the culprit is the battery or a loose connection.
As DD said, try to jump it. If it goes, then it's the battery. But do check the connections first, see if theres any corrosion on the connections from them being loose.

Hmm, the thing gets commuted on daily this time of year, and has never done this. However, the battery has always felt a little weak when starting. I'm guessing (hoping) it was marginal and has been limping along since I bought the bike used (where it sat on a showroom floor for who knows how long...

UPDATE!

I did some sleuthing and I've narowed it down to this:
The battery and connections are good. ALL fuses are good.

When you turn the key, there is no power making it to the fuel pump plug. The fuel sensor DOES get power.
When you press the start button, the relay doesn't even try to trip. BUT you can jump the contacts of the relay and the starter will spin.
When you turn the key, you can hear the throttle plates cycle briefly.

What would cause these two conditions simultaneously? (no start/no fuel pump)
If I can't figure this out tonight, I'm going to drop it at the local (crap) dealership, as much as it pains me to do so...

Have you recenty unpluged the ECU? If so, the plugs have to be all the way in and locked into position. Has there been any other components unplugged recently?

Nothing was unplugged recently. I took the handlebars and upper triple clamp off and laid them forward to torque the steering head bearings and after that, no start-o. I don't know what could have caused this from moving the wires around up front, but it was running perfectly up until that service, so I can't help but think it's related. I don't see any cut or frayed, etc. wires in the front harness though.

Possibly a wire at the kill switch in the handle bar switchgear came loose or broke during handlebar removal? Worth opening the switch gear to have a look?

The side stand switch ?
side stand switch would give you an error..forgot what it was. It would also let you start, just not in gear, unless clutch is pulled

Assuming you have done everything you wrote in your third post that you would do,

Follow each of the wires from the handlebar clusters and lightly see if a wire has a pinch mark, or if a wire going into a pin at a connector is pulled slightly loose.

This has to be the weak link. Follow those handlebar wires to their start and report back.

DOH! you guys had it. I followed the right cluster switch back and it was partially unplugged (in that great rat's nest by the battery, shame on you Yamaha...). What threw me was the mode select switch still worked! Must be a different plug...

Anyway, I snapped that back together and wala! fuel pump primes and the bike cranks over right away!
