We also were parked at a run down gas station once and a kid with bald spots from lice was putting his on. Mine was still locked.
Even if you're in the area standing by your helmet be careful with this one. Checkswrecks and I were in a place with lots of kids around. We had our helmets off to the side. I fastened mine like I was going to carry it by the strap. CW didn't. Guess who's helmet ended up on a kid's head?

This is why I carry this lock on my bike. Can lock my helmet or stich to the bike when needed. Makes it harder to ID my plate as an added bonus.

Sorry to hear about this and you getting sprayed with pepper spray. I have never used a helmet lock before, in fact never noticed anyone who has one where I live, but I think I may get one. Do you fasten the helmet with the metal buckle on the strap or run it through the facial opening so the full face helmet is secured? What is to prevent them from just cutting the strap if you do fasten it to the buckle only.

I use a ten dollar bike lock to protect my 500 dollar helmet Just loop it thru opening on full face And lock to bike.. I do this every time I leave the bike , even at the motorcycle shop!

I suspect that helmet theft is less common in states that don't have helmet laws. But any thief that recognizes a high end helmet probably still sees $$. When my helmets are dirty and stinky, I often don't bother to lock them unless the area seems really sketchy or there are a lot of kids around, (especially kids in foreign countries). When the helmet is newer, I lock it up. My current carbon fiber LS2 modular gets more attention that I would like. I carry it in or lock it up when leaving it on the bike. Just a simple cable lock.

As a bonus, if you have the right key blank, the helmet guardian can be re-keyed to work with your ignition key.

I removed my lock assemblies from the cross bar and dropped them off with a spare key at my local locksmith. Make sure your key is from the correct blank that will at least insert into the lock first.
