Managed to pick up a PAIR of OEM yam ones on eBay and offered £75 delivered and seller accepted from a listed price of £100. I’ll collect them from the post office Monday and fit the right hand one and keep the left as a spare!

What (if anything) are y'all using for glue to hold the Oxford grips on? I've received some, but haven't ever installed grips before...

Hi everyone. I’m very new to this forum and bike. I haven’t had a bike for 8 years but I really hit bit by the ADV bug and found an excellent price in a near mint 2013. Just 3411 miles (barely broken in,) and it came with a 2 Brothers slip on exhaust, a Yamaha engine protector, one that doesn’t cover the radiator, an OEM skid plate (pretty ugly,) and the guy had purchased the OEM heated kit, but they never were installed.

He is a Marine and was reassigned to Pearl Harbor, so the bike sat in his father’s storage, gently warmed up and driven about 50-100 miles per year and on a battery tender.

I don’t have any idea what I’m getting into, but know I can’t mess things up, as heated grips are a requirement if you want to ride past mid-October.

I don’t see lots of information on Gen 1 non-ES models and OEM heated grips. The original owner paid just over $400 for the kit when the S10 was purchased in 2014.

Any help I could get would be a real test. My brother in law is an electrician, so I’m sure I can get his help, but I also have an independent motorcycle repair shop within walking distance to my house. This guy did almost all my modifications to my 2008 R6.

His prices are more than fair.

I’m comfortable doing most of the servicing but the electrical stuff is out of my ballpark.

Thanks in advance.

Found the heated grips on my 2012 have stopped working. It appears that the left grip rotated on the handlebar putting the wire coming out of the grip between the clutch lever and switch housing. Which chewed through the black sheath and looks like shielding of some sort, wires looked OK. But both grips do not heat. I installed the Yamaha Grip Kit (23P-H29A0-V0) at the time of purchase in 2012.
Questions are.
Why both grips not working as the damage was to the left only?
Is the Temperature Controller also toast?
Anyway to test with a meter to see where and what is dead?
Thank you

The OEM grips are wired in series so if the wire is broke anywhere along the wire path of the two grips then both grips will stop working.

Most likely not.

Just unplug the grips behind the lower right side panel and measure resistance of each grip there at the connector.
Each OEM grip should measure about 2 Ohms.

Oxford grips are wired in parallel and measure about 8 Ohms each.
Since they are wired in parallel, if a wire breaks in one grip the other one still works.

For both the OEM or the Oxford grips, the equivalent resistance of both grips together (load on the system) is about 4 Ohms.

When my OEM grips failed and I got the Oxford grips, I wanted to reuse the connector to plug my Oxfords into the OEM heated grip plug for a power source.
Its been a while since I worked on this but if I remember right, on the grip side of the two grip connectors, the wire just loops up to the grip and back to the connector. You can't tell from that, if the two grips together are wired in parallel or series. I opened up the heated grip wiring harness to look at the other side of the two grip connectors, back in the wiring harness. The wire loops back around from one connector to the other. So that's how the OEM grips are wired in series.

It's not as bad as you think. When I got mine I was intimidated with the giant wad of wires too.

Thank you SparrowHawkxx for replaying to my questions. I found that the wire has exposed copper along with the outside plastic cover. I'm guessing that it is not repairable? Now to find a left hand grip to replace this one.

I just put on a new mini air horn which took about 5-10 minutes. I think I’m going to give it a shot. Decent weather here for a few more weeks. Thanks.

Thank you for all of the information! I’m looking at buying a 2017 non-ES and heated grips are in the future. Does anyone have the individual part numbers vs buying the kit? From reading it saves me $$.
Saw this from the post above so I’m assuming I’m just needing the other one.

Will this work on a 2012? My options now are to buy the kit again.
No, that part number is for a Gen II OEM grip warmers. Gen I, (2010-2013) use a different system that has an external controller. Gen II bikes have the OEM heated grips controlled thru the ECU.

@Bombadier36 - The parts list and pictures of the instruction pages for Gen II OEM grip warmers have been posted on the forum before. You should find them with a search for heated grips. I'll give you the parts list again, from here: LINK

Grip, Warmer (Left) 2KB-82963-00-00
Grip, Warmer (Right) 2KB-82960-00-00
Protector 1 2KB-2622K-00-00
Screw, Pan Head 90157-03122-00 98517-03008-00

And since I have them saved, the pictures of the instructions. I think I didn't save the first page since it was disassembly instructions. It's important to lube the throttle side wires and use the plastic protector as a strain relief to avoid wire breakage later. Any silicone based or white lithium grease will work well. A drop of blue Loctite 242 or comparable is advised on the screw that holds it in place, (noted in the instructions)

Once you plug the grips in, the bike will recognize them and when you cycle the display by holding the front finger trigger down for 2 seconds you will get the grip menu and can cycle thru the settings and select heat level 1, 2 or 3 bars, (low, med or high). In the full menu you can choose the heat level of 1, 2 and 3 bars on a 1-10 scale to make each of the three levels warmer or cooler to suit your preferences.

Link to original thread with all pages of instructions. Photobucket blurred the image when I attempted to share it.

Timely post Eric, thanks! I'm [patiently] waiting for OE heated grip parts for installation on my new '18. Farkling is almost complete... ;-)
