Handle bar end/Throttle grip spacing

After a tip over yesterday I noticed this gap, and I don't remember it being like this. There are grip cushions on, so that is the OEM grip sticking out to the right. Is this gap normal?
It does look similar in the manual diagram.

After viewing these pics I mumbled to myself "those bar-end weights and that gap look nothing like mine!"
Then I realized you folks all have GEN2s.
The bar-end weights on a GEN1 are a different shape (more cylindrical) with a tighter gap.
