You are really handy-capping yourself by not fixing your diagnostics. While they may not tell you exactly what component or system is bad, they could point you in the right direction.
What if diagnostics revealed a mis-firing coil or plug? You say your mechanic removed some corroded metal sleeves from your coils, perhaps they are shields of some kind? They were on there for a reason agreed? They corroded because of moisture. Perhaps after 12 days/1500 miles you got moisture in there again causing your current issues?
Agree from the technical side, but . . .

As I recall, the problem with Stu's inability to get to diagnostics is with the buttons on the instrument cluster. Replacing the cluster is very expensive, and I'm sure even more so where Stu is in the UK.

could be someone invoving the instrument cluster, which also affects his diagnostics issues.

Any chance you have a mate with the same Gen bike that you could swap clusters to do the diagnostics, then swap back when done?

Stick coils are notorious for failing with hairline cracks - very common in cars (vw/audi) and even other bikes.
The stick coil looks good but moisture can enter a hairline crack and short it from the inside.

Moisture/water gets into stick coil area, can short out the spark, rust the contacts - confirmed with your corroded metal sleeves.

You need to replace all 4 coils... replacing 2 you are gambling you leave possible faulty one in.

I saw a cluster price of $600us. There are repair options. To replace a button by a electronics tech might only cost $100?

I think a few members with that issue have tried the repair route to no avail. New cluster or nothing it seems. As a side note, it's pretty pathetic of Yamaha not to honour a replacement or advise of a repair solution if the only way to diagnose the bike is through the cluster, which is hardly a wear item............ ::009::

Thanks folks, especially EricV for your detailed reply. I hope I answer all your points here. Yes, a new console is out of the question for me. They are £800 in the UK. I dont have a friend that I could borrow from, in fact I dont know anyone with an S10 within 100 miles of me. During the 1,500 "good" miles I had, no moisture entered the plugs/coils.
All coils are working fine (I've checked them). I've been to a couple of console repair people who said it wouldn't be repairable.
Oh and yes my mechanic removed the metal sleeves on the coils but he says he's done that on several bikes and its fine..well it was on my bike too for 1,500 miles, so Im sure that is not a problem.
I will try your suggestion next Eric of wrapping/insulating the wires from the loom to the coil connector...its only a few mm's of exposed wires on my bike but I'll try it.
As before...any ideas still greatfully received. Cheers all.

Just another thought. The 1,500 "good" miles I had were after replacing the plugs. Is it really possible that the plug(s) could go bad after just 1,500 miles???
I've ordered some new ones anyway. Will be interesting to see if that gives me another "good" 1500 miles!!

Hi Stutrump

I now have the exact same issue you had back in 2016, would you mind sharing if you managed to find the issue and fix it?
