Finally thought I'd fit my shiney Yamaha led indicators. Started the strip then discovered that the OEM pannier rails require a security torx key to remove them. It's a large beast .. V50. Did I have one. Of course not .... every other tool in the freakin' world but not a V50 tamperproof torx thingy. Had to go ridin' ;) took hours trailing around the cafes and dives of Oxford. Then went to the tool emporium and procured me a whole set of the fings. Now I can't be bothered to fit the indicators. Maybe tomoz ;)

Heh. I also thought I'd failed at the first hurdle when I noticed those security torx bolts. But, amazingly, I actually already had the correct bit in a socket set!

Allow plenty of time for that job, though, unless you are super handy with the spanners. You've got to pretty much strip the rear subframe and the headlight has to come out at the front...

Also, as has been mentioned in a couple of other places, most people who have fitted the LED indicators have found that the hazards don't work properly afterwards if you fit one in-line resistor per flasher as per the instructions. The solution in that case is to fit one resistor only per side. Worth testing thoroughly before putting everything back together.

Thank you for that Rocca ... good advice right there ... much appreciated. This is why sites like this are so valuable. Luckily, I understand the vagaries of this task as I've taken advice from Greg (Wasp) and I've thoroughly read his various threads on the subject (ADV). I'm pretty handy in the art of spannering so I'm aiming for a good half a day to do the job. I don't really mind if it takes longer as I get my kicks from this type of thing. Happy days! :) It musn't take all day though cos I wanna go back to those dodgy dives and play some more with the clientele. :)

I know how it goes as having the right tools. I did Yamaha vehicle set ups for two dealers for 6 years. Each year as they came out with model changes, I would have to do a tool purchase.

someone the other day said there may be a metric version out there for torx fasteners? does anyone know if this is true? I know there is a Japanese version of a Philips head screw-driver that doesn't strip a japanese philips head screw.

You are correct that there is a 'sort-of' European/metric version of Torx (not really Torx, but similar). It's official name is XZN, otherwise called 'Triple Square'. It has 12 sides, much like if you took 3 squares and overlayed them at a slight offset.

My Porsche is full of them, same with newer Audi's and VW's (and some Japanese vehicles as well - head bolts and the like).

They are designed for high-torque applications, but does that explain the drain pan bolt on my Porsche? I don't know if BMW bikes use them or not (since I wont own one any newer than the R100).

Here is a description: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_square#Triple_square

Hoeby for the avoidance of doubt ... the torx security fasteners are only on the limited edition bikes with the OEM pannier rails. Of course if someone buys the OEM kit then you'll need a torx key set unless you change out the fastners supplied with the kit.

Dang Swagger, that's even better info. Probably saved me some money.. Now, are there any other fasteners on the bike that are Torx?

I've wondered more than once why these are referred to as "security fasteners" when you can march over to any tool store and buy the necessary wrenches to remove them.

What REALLY makes me wonder though are those one way screws that they put bathroom stalls together with. ???

Not unless you've already got a normal torx set :D There are other ordinary torx fasteners on the bike. For example the plate under the pillion seat. Off you go ... get them tools ::) You might just as well get the anti tamper kit then you cover all bases ;)

Thanks Swagger..I have the normal set, and a small set of security used in electronics. Looks like I'm good to go. 8)

Done that then. Indicators are fitted. Just one little problem. The hazards no longer work when the motor is running. Apparently, this means that I need to remove one or two of the resistors.

Do you guys want pics of this install or have you seen Wasps thread on ADV?

Here's a taster.

Done that as well. I removed one of the front load resistors and it's all good. Indicators look and work just fine now. That's enough fettling I'm taking it into London tomorrow. Should be fun.
