Givi top box vs Factory top box.

Just looking for rider experience regarding top boxes. I have limited my selection to a factory Yamaha Top Case and the Givi 38/42 litre Trekker type case. I don't want to discuss the merits of why have a top box. For some reason my local buddies insist there a bad idea. I just want somewhere to easily lock up my hemlet and hold my personal goodies. Anyway I digress.

Factory Box Pros: Its Factory and matches my factory bags. I have no plans to change/alter the factory bags
Givi Pros: Looks like solid enough construction, can be moved to a second bike with a simple adaptor plate

Both are CRAZY expensive... I was actually a little surprised, my other ride came with 3x factory cases. The GIVI, SWMOTECH and FACTORY bags are all within dollars. Im tempted to try a 400CND Chinese knock off because the other options are at least twice that.

I like one week trips, 300Miles/500Kms a day, no off-roading, occasional grave/dirt road for short trips.

Thanks in advance.

I have the GIVI 42 L as a top box. Barely big enough to hold my Nolan modular but it works. IMHO for daily riding or day trips, the top box is preferred because of the convenience. For longer trips I use side bags of 33 and 42 L

I always use the Givi top box besides when I go for a overnight ride.
I store my air compressor, tyre repair kit, first aid kit, raincoat (?), etc etc.
The helmet always comes with me .
It is good also for the passenger as it has a backrest too

OEM top box for me, holds my shoei neotec2 and some other stuff in/around it just fine. And it looks good in the Matt black.

right, I like the back rest of the GIVI, good point. Now for more cheap complaining; thats another 80 frog skins... Guess I'm going to spend a couple more nights under the stars, and less time in fancy hotels.

I have a Givi top box that I use. I’ve really liked it. My wife likes it, but the Givi rack had to be moved back 2” to make it comfortable in relation to the pillion seat. I like it cause it holds two helmets and is easily locked when going in somewhere. When traveling I keep light items in it, layers of clothing etc.

Unfortunately you are right...
They are expensive but so far it seems well built.
Overhere we have a saying that might not mean anything to you, it goes like this:
Who spends more ,spends less ...
I experienced first hand, sometimes it's better to spend more but once instead to try to spend less and ending spending more later...
Hope it makes sense in English:rolleyes:

Same one over here, just sounds different. But you are right, quality pays for itself in the end.

Givi is very well made, and for touring (especially Sport-touring) is pretty much the industry-standard.
I have a V-46 that I use on my FJ1200.
I did use it on the Super-Tenere for a short time (before I bought the complete Bumot setup)
The only issue with using a Givi top-case that is any larger than the (cube-shaped) 42-liter Trekker-Outback or equivalent, with the factory Yamaha side-cases, is that you cannot open the side-cases with the top-case locked in place. The way the lids are positioned, they will hit the overhanging top-case. This was the case with my V46.
The smaller cube-shaped ones, this is not a problem.
Keep that in mind when shopping for a top-case.

And you are absolutely right!
Givi top-case can be used on multiple bikes, factory Yamaha one cannot!
For similar money, I would buy a Givi every time.........

I have the Givi Outback Trekker 42L in black. It’s a good enough match for the black OEM pannier boxes. Keep in mind anything much larger (wider) will interfere with opening the lids of the OEM panniers? I had planned to use the Givi v46 that I had on my ST1300 but due to its width it interfered.

I've had a Givi case in the past, but now I have a Shad case. I like the shad case better. One of the main reasons was on the Givi I had to have the key to open the box, but the Shad case would open without a key. Quality seems to be about the same. I have the standard rounded case. The Shad Terra box is closer to what you're looking for. Research the Terra box and see what you think.

Have a look at Kappa. I have the same Kappa top box since 2010 when I got my first Tenere. I'm now on my 3rd and the box is still perfect more than 200k klm later. It is exactly the same as a Givi. and was much cheaper than the Givi when I bought it.

i had the oem boxes when i bought the bike 2013 crosser in black, but in my opinion they were horrible clocks were crap plastic boxes not good,
i sold them on all 3 back in the day, and only had to put a £120 with the money i got for them to change to the givi trekker outback system
was well chuffed

I have the OEM rear luggage, the locks are crap, the top box is to small to put my helmet in unless I take everything else out first and I only did that once. I bought a helmet lock from Dennis Kirk and mounted it near the rear foot peg but it’s pretty rare that I use the helmet lock. Other than the crappy locks I’m reasonably satisfied with the rear OEM luggage.

thanks for the posts. I'm leaning towards the Givi. Kappa is available BUT its only a couple of bucks less and need to be ordered where the Givi gear is in stock.

Purchased a GIVI Trekker topbox with the aluminum mono-key plate. Excellent Purchase. Hit the pocket book a little harder than I would have preferred but the quality is outstanding. Such an improvement over the factory panniers. The big drawback is now having to carry a second key. It matches the bike's decor and factory boxes nicely. I almost want to replace the factory panniers with GIVI Trekkers but they do work, as long as the key lock doesn't fall apart.

Givi, it is ugly but so is the rest of the bike, very strong and extremely useful 5D6216E4-1E8A-4F28-ADEA-7ADB60FC8B32.jpeg
