Re: 2014+ Windscreen Poll (What works for tall large riders?)

BACKGROUND

6'3" 290 lbs 32 inseam
Review of Yamaha OEM winglets and Yamaha OEM tall screen
Windscreen in tall setting
Winds in the 6 - 8 mph range
No rain temperature about 72 F

Bike: 2014 S10 ES (Love the Gray Mare)

Did a short interstate and city run of about 100 miles round trip.

Using a 2XL cycle gear bilt flip helment .. no ear plugs ... (note: My go to helmet ... Nolan N104 EVO XXXL helmet is back at the repair site)

Results

PRO

1. Much better with tall screen and winglets
2. Lower speeds okay with limited noise
3. Not much buffeting to head almost no neck side thrusts due to wind going over or around windshield
4. Both products are well made and fit well

CON

1. High noise at 65 MPH - 90 MPH (ears ringing after 30 + interstate miles)
2. Some helmet shake (Blurs vision a little) from wind on helmet ... at such speeds
3. Shoulders seem out in the wind (But I am a big guy)

OVERALL

A big step up from the short OEM & w/o winglets.

If I knew now what the results were, but have tried other screen / brackets options .... and still bought the OEM winglets

note: yamaha tall windscreen is about $ 70 cheaper or more .... than parabellum, cal sci, see baley, givi airflow .... and not yet all make a 2014+ windscreen .... not sure about Mad Sat (sp)

So if you are 5'11 or near the tall OEM would likely work well for you with winglets

The 2014 winglets seem to be much smaller than the 2012/13 version. The 2012/13 go much further forward I believe, or have I just seen some after market product on my buddy's bike?

Re: 2014+ Windscreen Poll (What works for tall large riders?)

Rode the '12 with the 24" Parabellum 2up with wife. I'm 6'1" 34" inseam. Line of site to road is not perfect but I can usually overcome that with how I sit. Breaks a lot of the buffeting though, especially helps on cold days.

Rode '14 2up with the stock windscreen an hour later and my wife wondered why she was getting so much air and noticed a temp. change.

So for a 2 hour trip with 22mph gust winds in forecast I switched the Parabellum over to the '14. Wouldn't fit at first but switched the '12 plastic bodywork above headlight over as well and removed the acc. bar. Fits just like the '12 did. I think it worked well for our getaway. I do want to switch everything back and find a way to add the acc. bar back. I do know the '14 stuff will go backwards to the '13 and '12 as well if someone wanted to order that but it does change how the lower screws fit ..... windscreen hits plastic and need bushings inside shield with longer 5mm screws.

2014+ Windscreen Poll (What works for tall large riders?)

Is it just me or can you see the buffeting over the head?

Or is the buffeting from my windshield? - shot with an iPhone 6+

1000 miles update with Madstad Bracket and Largest +1" Madstad medium gray windscreen.
2014 S10 ES
Rider 6'3" 290 lbs inseam 32"
Yamaha OEM winglets installed
Mirror extenders with OEM mirrors
Nolan Evo 104 3XL modular helment
Sena 20S now using Yamaha brand ear buds instead of the helmet speakers provided by Sena

Okay been riding about 1000 miles, with the Madstad system on my 2014 ES.

Outline

1. First few weeks it is like I found the complete answer to wind and noise.
2. After that I of course stated to notice a few issues even though improvement for my from OEM Tall was night and day
3. Still looking for an improved helmet as Nolan has a few rattles and can be painful after an hour ride
4. Would love to do a back to back comparison of the Madstad largest + 1" and the largest Parabellum windscreen, but do not have $200 to risk on the experiment .

Findings

1. Shield at highest setting give the best air pocket but still has some top of the helmet noise at freeway speeds
2. Shield at losest setting does not give a air pocket from the neck up, but the air that hits the helmet is fairly smooth and clean
3. The largest + 1" shield is great in the rain. (Wider width and Height keeps a lot of water off you and your GPS screen / phone screen)
4. Medium gray looks great on the 2014 Gary ES S10
5. Medium gray screen is great in the daylight but on dark roads in the back country keep it as low as it goes to ensure you can see road debris. If you do real off road at night or in low light do not get the medium or darker gray windscreens.
6. Shield and bracket shake some in cross winds and at super legal speeds. Much more than OEM bracket and OEM tall screen
7. The Sena 20s helmet speakers with the OEM bracket and OEM tall screen were useless at speeds over ~ 60 MPH. Worked great below 45 MPH
8. The Sena 20s helmet speakers with the Madstad system were great to about 60 and useless over ~ 75 MPH. (Nolan helmet above in use)
9. Using the Sena 20s with Yamaha brand ear buds allows with Madstad useful clear sound to 80 MPH and great sound compared with helmet speakers
10. For hot wet florida the bigger OEM screen and Bigger Madstad system do not seem to increase rider heat levels, but the engine noise is significantly increased to the rider with the madstad due to a quieter air pocket.

We are doing a 500 mile (mostly interstate) ride this weekend and will report back with any new insights.

Hi guys, ordered winglets and Puig touring screen for my 2014 ES.
The Puig screen will be 14 cm/4' higher than stock, lets hope it works.

I have the Parabellum X-Tall that i use on long tours and have X-Screen on the OEM windshield for short non-highway trips. Parabellum works very well for headwinds but not so good on the trail as it is quite heavy and rattles the adjuster knobs loose (zipped tied them down to keep from spinning).

I am 6'1" tall and am running the standard Yamaha Screen on the third rung up on the adjustable mount and its fine for me .........better than any R1 screen i have had to try to hide behind so far this century...... so am i missing out on something here ?? How much better is a bigger screen - surely bigger means more surface area so there fore more drag and more buffeting , or are you just cocooned in a peaceful pocket of tranquillity ? ::)

I just have the Puig adjustable visor on the Yamaha touring screen. I'm 6'2" and it works fine. If the screen you bought doesn't do it for you , i suggest adding the adjustable visor.

6'5" w/ 35" inseam.

My gen2 ES came with the tall Yamaha screen. In the tallest setting, it's too short to eliminate buffeting .

Tried a clip on Touratech extender and got some improvement. Just installed an MRA X-Creen Touring. Still playing with different settings, but can't match the smooth air behind the Givi AirFlow mounted to an adjustable bracket on my gen1 bike.

I'm interested to see what Cee Bailey's introduces, but think I might end up back with my gen1 setup.

I recently ordered the CalSci medium based off their charts and other good reviews I found here. I am 5'10" with a 32" inseam and wanted a windshield that would be slightly taller than the stock screen yet doesn't look too tall. I don't like the look of huge windshields so I hope this medium sized screen is what I am looking for. Slightly improved wind protection and less buffeting while not having to look threw the windshield and still complimenting the lines of the bike.

Either way, I will be sure to post a short review here when it comes in.
