I received the recall letter for this from Yamaha so I know my 2013 bike needs it, but I also entered my VIN here:

https://www.yamaha-dealers.com/public/web/techpubs/nhtsaPublications.html

It lists the new wire harness recall, but it also lists the old headlight harness recall that I supposedly had taken care of years ago at the dealer where I originally bought the bike. I would expect that an authorized Yam dealer would know how to log that recall work had been completed. I never checked their work because I never had a headlight problem. How can I verify that the headlight harness work was completed?

By the way, when I enter my VIN on the NTSHA site it only lists the old headlight harness recall (status: incomplete). It does not list the new one. Government being government I guess.

Just a heads up to let anyone else who might have newest version of the MCCruise installed on their 12-13 that it caused the local dealer a bit more time to complete the recall work. I did tell them it had an acc. cruise control installed when I took the bike in along with the CC instructions.
One of the recall harness connectors goes to the TPS as does the MCCruise to intercept the signal and send it to the CC computer. That caused a bit of head scratching for them and it took them longer to do the work. After much discussion with the dealer I agreed to pay 1.5 hours shop time which I thought was fair to complete the work.
Might want to talk to your dealer before getting the recall done to confirm if any extra work is required due to haveing the MCCruise system installed.

Got mine done by the local dealer. Bike hadn’t demonstrated any of the symptoms to date, but I figured at some point down the road when I sell the bike, an unresolved warranty issue might be a concern to potential buyers. The local shop ordered up the part in advance, worked with me to schedule an appointment, & turned around the job in 24hrs. No complaints here. YMMV.

If you read the instructions for the headlight recall it instructs the dealer to make a mark on the Serial number sticker on the bike to indicate the recall was made. My experience says most dealers do not do this step, but it is worth a look. Recall instructions are online if you do a search.
The only difference is a slightly heavier wire used for the headlight connections. It is easy to see difference if you have the new and old harness side by side, but to just have a look it may be difficult to see. Remove the round covers off the back of the headlight assembly and you will see the wires. Here is a pic of the new and old connections I took when I replaced mine.

I got my recall work done about 3 weeks ago.
I rode the bike home from the dealer, no problems with how the engine ran so I figured they must have got the connections in the right place, but did they route the sub harness properly?
The Recall Service Procedures are very specific about:
  1. how the new sub harness is to be routed,
  2. where the two supplied cable ties, or clamps as the call them, are to be placed to secure the harness,
  3. and how the splices are to be positioned. They should be routed so that they come out of the engine area, outside the frame, into the space behind the right side cowling. See the picture jrusell posted in reply #88.
The first thing I did when I got home was raise the tank so I could see what was done.
The sub harness was just laying in there loosely on top of the ignition coil pigtails. Not a big deal, I secured it the way it should be. I had to use some zip ties out of my supply since they did not give me the ones they did not use.

The thing that really bothered me was how they positioned the splices. They did not run them outside the frame, they were pointed down and were right next to the engine block. I do not think they could have found a worse place to put them (for heat and moisture).

My recommendation,
If you have had the recall work done already; Raise the tank or at least pull the right side cowling off to see if the splices are in the right place.
If your bike is at the dealer or you will be taking it in for the recall; Pull the cowling off to inspect the splice before leaving the dealer to take it home.

ballisticexchris, it sounds like you're lucky and you have a good dealer with good techs that you trust and that is great. Your profile says you're in Fullerton CA. and that tells me you probably have 50 or more shops close by to pick from.

Out here in the burgs and villes we aren't that lucky. Most shops do good to have one certified tech that knows his ass from a hole in the ground. It's a roll of the dice whether you get a good tech to do the recall or they pull the part time kid away from an oil change and let him do the job.

Don't even think about telling them what to do and how you want the job done or else they will tell you to load it up and hit the road. Out here away from Southern CA that can mean a 100-200 mile drive to another dealer that may be worse than the one you just left.
The few dealers I've been to won't even let you in the shop. Got signs up sayin employees only.

Very good reasons for those signs, but I’ve never had any dealer refuse letting me into a shop if there was a decent reason for me to be in there.

Called the dealer on 11/6/2018 that I bought the bike from. Gentlemen took my name and number and informed me they would call me when the parts came in. Never got a call back. Called the dealer again on 12/9/2018. This time the call verified my information and informed me that there were 2 recalls on my bike. One for the wire harness and the other for the headlight, that I was told was addressed before I bought the bike. Still haven't heard back from them since. Yamaha has a problem on their hands with these dealerships that don't give a damn about the people that buy motorcycles from them. Now I have to trust that they actually do the work and do a quality job. Good thing I have other options to ride.

You can check the Yamaha USA site yourself to see if they have it on record that the recall for the headlight socket was completed.
See Reply #21 for a link to the Yamaha USA site. Search for your VIN there.

My dealer won't even order the harness until I bring it in. No problems with my bike. I'll worry about it when the time comes and they can kiss my ass.

When I inquired about the recall back in late November the two big Yammy dealers in my area that I called had not performed any of the actual recalls yet so I figured I will wait for at least a few of the recalls to be done so I am not the first one.
Also I might add that since I picked up my new to me '13 S10 late last June and put almost 1500 miles on the clock by mid October
the bike never had any of the symptoms mentioned in the recall letter.

Sad. The dealer I had mine done at, just needed the VIN#, which I gave over the phone. They need it to order the kit. When it came in, they called me, and I took it in.

Hard Starting, 2012 TENERE. I began having some starting problems with a discharged battery in Spring '18, in spite of keeping it on a trickle charger. The battery was only a year old, but I bought a new battery, which also began having discharge problems; I blamed the new battery (Batteries Plus, not Yuasa), but headed off to eastern Tennessee from Longmont, CO anyway. Had to be careful about serial starts (needed maybe 60 miles to charge fully) & had to have it jump-started twice (once at a motel, other at a gas pump). When running it was OK. I got the recall notice in December. Tri-City Cycle in Loveland took my VIN over the phone, ordered the harness, & called me when it was in. I just had the sub-harness installed at no cost to me, & Tri-City did a nice job) ... AND, it solved the battery discharge problem.

Took my 2012 in for the wiring change yesterday. Seemed to go well. Rode home and it sounded and rode just like it always did. I did have one issue when the weather was hot as you stopped at a red light the idle would drop below a 1000 rpm but it would not die. It was a warm day yesterday but only in the 50's when I rode it home so I will wait and see if the wiring harness helps that. Hope it does but all went well with the change.

Alright, a fellow New Yorker. How YOU doin' ?

I'm in Huntington on Long Island. I'm thinking like you, to let the dealership do one or more of the recalls before I decide to bring it in. I haven't even contacted the dealer about it yet, in fact I do all my own service so I've actually not been back there since 2012!. :D I bought the bike at LI Kawasaki/Yamaha in Hicksville, but don't know anything about their service dept. Can you tell me what two big Yamaha dealers you called that haven't done it yet? Any updates to that since you called? Assuming my 2012 continues to have no symptoms, I'll probably wait as long as it takes for someone to have experience with the recall. Hell, I think about doing it myself too, since the instructions are on here.

If you ever ride out on LI, maybe we can meet up. I ride along the North Shore a lot from Bayville area eastward. Many great roads, the tricky part is connecting so many short roads together for a long ride, and avoiding traffic. (EARLY on Sunday is pretty much the only way around here).
Take it easy.

this may be the old placebo effect but after the wiring change on my bike the unpredictable throttle issues I had below 2000 rpm seem to be gone. I never had any issues like was talked about with it going 3000 rpms on its own and things like that. The bike really does feel a lot better though!

My 2013 had this recall completed last month. Mine has been the only one the dealer has seen/done and they said it was a horror to do. Prayed they'd wouldn't see another. Rode it 7 miles to the house. Went to take on a trip last week and will not start. Cranks over & floods till battery gets weak. Bought a new battery thinking maybe after 6 years, it maybe not shooting enough CCAs to fire. Still no go. Now I'm wondering if the shop left something loose. Still waiting for them to come pick it up.

Got mine back after recall, several loose cut wires at ECU. Does not seem very professional.
