So if this is just the wiring harness replace that i already had done no use in me bringing it back in.
Or is it something more extensive than that?
Anyone have to pay extra to have after market bars removed?
"Loss of control or even death"? Now that sounds like something i told the guy over the phone at USA Yamaha..
Ramsey -
Yours is going to be one where you need to call the Yamaha person who set you up because only they will be able to tell the configuration of the harness you have.
That said, my guess is that yours will not be one of the original Gen1 harnesses that the recall applies to. It's likely either a late Gen1 production (post problem) or adapted Gen2.

Sounds like the problem is not so much mfg / assy, but more an issue with separation at some crimps and then corrosion setting in.

I wish you would go ahead and do it and make a video for us.
I have to take the bike apart for its 26K mile valve check, and while i am at it, i'm going to replace the timing chain and tensioner. (Ordered those parts yesterday.) If I install the harness repair kit, i'll document it. Thanks. I sort of think "not broken, don't fix it," but it will be nice to have the parts on hand so if it does go goofy, i can fix it right away.

blitz, what year is your bike? Why replacing the chain?
Bike is a 2013. At about 20K miles, the cam chain started rattling on start up - takes about 3 seconds to quiet down. Bought a new tensioner from a member here, and i figure that if i have it that far apart, why not replace the chain, set the timing, and be done with it. $15 for a clutch cover gasket, $23 for a chain, and the tensioner and gasket cost, i think, $90 for the set. for not too much money, i can be assured that i'll be golden with a new timing system.

Nice to know - thanks. A member here bought the updated tensioner, then sold his bike before he installed it. I bought it from him knowing that i'd need it. I am happy that yours worked out, and i hope that i have the same luck.

Picked up my recall-completed '12 this morning. Mine's the third one my local dealer has completed, tech says with each one they're learning more and reducing the time needed to complete. All told they had it less than 3-1/2 hours. No issues, took a nice long detour on the way home, didn't note any run-ability changes. Guess time will tell...

Thanks! Ordered. Now, i will have the parts, so if it ever exhibits symptoms, I can fix it myself.
Thanks to everyone one this thread - this is great!
@blitz - I talked to the tech that completed the recall on my '12 and asked about a DIY fix on the harness. FWIW, he said the repair is NOT for the faint of heart and would recommend having a [experienced] dealer complete it.

Not saying you don't have the skillz to complete it...just my $.02!

Good luck.

I just got back from the dealer, (SG Power for you Victoria folks), and they confirmed yes, my 2013 is part of the recall. They are going to order the parts and are good with waiting until May when I insure it again for me to bring it in. I inquired about getting charged extra as I noticed someone was, but was assured if I brought it in stock, I would not be charged for anything. That means I'll have to remove the extra upper crash bars I've added to the stock ones. Not an issue.

Please put discussion about the timing chain or cam chain tensioners in threads about that. To split this thread and move that content is a PITA which takes time.

Thanks for the concern. I spent 4 years as a mechanic in a motorcycle shop in high school and college, 3 engineering degrees with a phd in EE, and a few patents in the areas of autonomous vehicles, so swapping cables/connectors/harness shouldn't be a problem. (I've done my own ee design/cable/harness design and manufacturing (to ensure that it's right), so no problem). My plan is to leave my bike alone until it shows symptoms, and if it does start with the high idle/no idle problem, i'll fix it then.

Thanks again.
