Makes me happy I submitted my report to NHTSA last month. Love the bike, but don't love this problem.

Yes, interesting. My bike was having the stall issues, along with the high idle issues before I did the valve adjustment. After moving all of the wiring around I must have set something back into place because it's been 20,000 miles without any of those issues.

Do you think these end up being a world wide recall, how do these things normally work out.
Would have thought so, unless US versions have a different wiring system, which is doubtful. Some dealers can be lazy though...I discovered on a US based forum that certain WR250R's had a recall for dodgy stators. I never got a call from Yamaha so when I called them they sheepishly fessed up and told me to bring the bike in when the parts arrived.

Couldn't see a recall for this specific issue on this site, maybe awaiting an update?

Actually, US version have a completely different wiring harness. US bikes don't have the theft prevention items, Immobilizer, Red Key, etc that the rest of the world's bikes have. That doesn't mean the same problem can't exist in those harnesses, but only Yamaha knows.

Some recalls expand over time. Others are limited to the region with similar bikes. California bikes sometimes have unique recalls since they are not the same as the rest of the US bikes. Mostly due to charcoal canisters. Now that EU is getting Euro4 compliant bikes, they may have issues that the US bikes don't suffer from.

Considering that there are quite a few Gen I US bikes with well over 100k miles on them, and it's been 8 years since the release of the Gen I in the world, and this is just now showing up, I'd suspect it's a relatively small margin of bikes that actually suffer from this issue.

Just checked the VIN on my 2013, and i have E5DA in my VIN, and the recall shows ED4 and ED2, but "not sequential." My bike has had 1 stall episode when it was new, and it would not start until the next day, but no other symptoms. (Not sure if that issue was related to the recall.) I wonder if mine is in the recall pool? I guess i'll find out.

Thanks to those who complained to NHTSA - I would have, but i could never be sure that my one stall event was related to this. Thanks also to those who pestered Yamaha for a fix - your efforts may have saved a life or more.

always contact NTSB NHTSA (www.safercar.gov) for a safety issue, this is an example of one issue. I have been rather outspoken about the ABS units that are causing problems and this is the reason why.

Called in and verified that both 2013 models that my wife and I bought are not a part of the affected VIN range. Neither bike has exhibited any of these symptoms since they were purchased new.

Curious to know if you called Yamaha or NHTSA?

I called Yamaha as well and the woman I spoke with said my VIN # was not part of the recall but she was not able to acknowledge the recall number from NHTSA that was part of the recall letter.

Maybe a bad batch of wire harness. I don't think a design change would happen without a known cause. Some manufacturer for wire harness messed up. But good to know what caused the gremlins. Now you can fuel up after midnight.

I have had this problem a number of times - bike has 150,000 miles on it - so good to see Yamaha had come up with a fix. My bike was one of the first US deliveries, August 11 2011. BUT when I go to NHTSA and plug in my VIN, this recall doesn't come up. Outside the VIN range. WTF? Will have to discuss with Yamaha I guess...

dcstrom, when I type in my VIN on the NHTSA site it does not show this recall for me either.

You can search for model or VIN from the NHTSA home page. link
Search for: 2012 Yamaha XTZ12 or 2013 Yamaha XTZ12
Or navigate from: the Home Page / Recalls / VEHICLE (instead of VIN), then search the model.

I have not had this problem until recently, Sep 22, was the first time with 78,000 miles on my 2013. I only had the no idle problem and not the high idle. I found a sag in the wiring harness just before the sensor pigtails come out of the harness under the airbox. Poked on the harness there while the engine was running and got it to act up and the engine died.
I straightened the harness so there was no sag and zip tied it to the horizontal bar to support the harness where it was sagging. After about 6 test rides and 200 miles the problem never came back.

edit: Some minor changes above to make it more clear. Now have 900 more miles and still no problem.

I just checked this website:

https://www.yamaha-dealers.com/public/web/techpubs/nhtsaPublications.html

My bike is on the recall...however yesterday when I checked it was not. I bet that Yamaha just hadn't updated their database until last night or this morning. For all you who called earlier this week I'd encourage you to check the above and then call the corporate office/dealer.
