Appears this fix is scab work to keep from replacing harness.
My bike has no spark now and dealer has to call Yamaha Tuesday.

That's the reason I'm going to check all the connections and take a pass on letting them screw with it. I can always get it done down the road, but it ain't broke and I ain't letting them fix it. Good luck Cdutch, I'm sure they will get it figured out.

Looks like I will be taking the bike in for the recall talked to the manager yesterday about getting the parts and doing it myself said he couldn't do that. And my bike has all the symptoms so be glad to have it running correctly again.

Hmmmmm..... guess i like the idea of waiting a bit. I have not had any issues. But, there does seem to be a expiration on these recalls....?

No expiration. Have it done now, or in 10 years if you want.

I had mine done several days ago. Did not have any problems with the bike, but would hate to be in the middle of nowhere and have the problem pop up when I could have prevented it.

You can always just buy the harness and install yourself. I know it sucks to have to shell out the $35 for the part, but if you would rather do it yourself this is always an option.

That's was my plan but he said he couldn't just sale the part the dealer has to do the job.

Mine is still dead and they cut 1 wire on programing plug.
Adventure in Monroe will be doing my '12 next week. As reported, Service Manager says the recall is quite involved and a total PITA to install although he says the instructions are thorough and understandable. They've done two bikes so far w/o issues so I'll take the plunge next.

So if this is just the wiring harness replace that i already had done no use in me bringing it back in.
Or is it something more extensive than that?
Anyone have to pay extra to have after market bars removed?
"Loss of control or even death"? Now that sounds like something i told the guy over the phone at USA Yamaha..

Do you have the part number for the harness? I have to do my valve check this winter, and because i'll have the bike apart, i'd rather buy the harness and replace it myself than to have someone hack my bike. I am going to replace the cam chain adn tensioner also (25K miles) 'cause the bike rattles on start up, so if i am in this far, i'll just spend another $35 to do it correctly.

If you can provide it, that would be great! Thanks.

The fix is splicing into the current wiring harness, so your change was the harness, not the current fix. As for the one you have, I would guess it would be how long ago did Yamaha correct the wiring in the "new" Gen 1 wiring harness's. Couple of months/6 months/year? If more than a couple of months, bets would be your harness is not the "newer" version. Guess the mothership would be the only one who could answer that. Great thought would be, what would the recall do to a new harness that was already fixed? Rambling on, Yamaha may just use the harness's they have on hand, and do the fix at the factory if they have a good inventory. It is not like they have a real demand for new harness's.

I was not charged for my bars having to be taken off/on. Asked prior just to make sure.

If you are able to remove the right side cover and the battery without removing your crash bars there is no reason to remove them.
I have alt rider bars and I just removed the upper and lower right side cover before I dropped the bike off.
All the electrical and the tray the electrical mounts to is to come off for the rewiring. This can be done with the alt rider bars in place.

They also want the left side cover off as well. There is no work done on the left but they need the access the tank bolt to remove the fuel tank. You could just remove the tank bolt for them and leave the left cover in place if you wanted.

My thought would be that the harness you got, probably doesn't have the fix. Just that you have one that is not screwed up, and subject to the recall. But I would confirm with Yamaha. Who knows how long they knew about it, and were silently fixing the issue on the inventory they had, until you and others with the problem forced them.

For those thinking to use shrink sleeve tubing, you might consider liquid electric tape.
