To add to Thrasherg's excellent response, the other reason the Super Ten doesn't show the gear position with the clutch in is that it would take a new engine case casting to add a selector. That occurred for the FJR, but it's not as simply as just putting the part in. It's far cheaper to give you most of the function with just some software and a spot on the dash to read it.

Vasos -

Welcome aboard. Do a search and you'll find a number of earlier threads discussing this. The basic answer is that there are a couple of ways to show the gear, one of which involves a new sensor and wiring, while the other is to simply divide RPM by speed. Yamaha is big on reliability and simplicity so went for the latter, PLU of course it saved a few cents per bike to install a new sensor and wiring.

It used to bug me but I got over it, only 2 situations I think a gear indicator is even useful is a lot of stop & go City driving or if your cruising on the Hwy & wonder if your in 5th or 6th Yamaha should have just left it off the bike IMO.

We have become far too reliant on gadgetry and less on natural acquired skills in riding and driving. I agree, Yamaha should had kept it simple by not having it, but it makes sales and when competing with BMW's master's of gadget's Yamaha had to play the game.
Gear indicator is something i never look at or use, my spidy senses work just fine. In fact there is a distinctive difference felt from 1-2 or 2-1 shifting over all other gears. Once you feel it, thats all is needed.
I relate this to backup sensors and side mirror sensors, what happened to shoulder checking and learning how to back up. LOL

The first clutch "clicks"....is only for disengage the cruise control
If you want to join the clucht sensor, you would be work in the “second” clicks
When you do this, you disengage the security system that prevents the S10 starting in gear with no pull the clutch

This is the first bike I have ever owned with a gear indicator so it's a non issue for me.

I’ve owned both but prefer having the gear indicator , wish the gear would display with clutch pulled in but it doesn’t so I accept that.

Vasos, just to be clear, the software calculates the gear by comparing the drive output to the engine rpm. If the clutch is disengaged, that relationship is gone, and the calculated gear would be incorrect. So it is not just a matter of defeating the display blanking.

I’ve had the gear indicator actually show I was in 1st gear when I was slipping the clutch in 2nd.

Then either your clutch needs adjustment (being hydraulic there really isn't much that can be adjusted!), or the clutch sensor switch needs adjustement as it should not be possible to see a gear being indiacted if the clutch lever is pulled in (even by a small amount).

I would do the following (now I cannot because, took out a kidney a week ago:)) I would use a relay, whose signal is taken from a wire that is hot when the engine is running (for example the lights) ... and so we keep the "not start in gear “ security system. So .... we turn on the key, the relay is off, the security is activated. When the engine starts, the relay is activated, it joins the wires of the second clutch switch, then the ecu does not know that we are pulling the clutch, therefore it would not show "-" on the dashboard. The first switch, we do not bypass it, so the deactivator of the cruise continues to work

Not true. There’s nothing wrong with my clutch or the clutch switch, the bike was moving but because I was deliberately slipping it (you need to move the lever further before the clutch switch is activated). The gear position computer momentarily saw speed and RPM values consistent with being in 1st gear. Once the clutch is fully released it shows the correct indication for second gear. I use the clutch lever routinely to cancel the CC, so it’s working just fine.
