Welcome from Stratford Ontario Canada.
I had an Africa Twin for two years, loved it
Now riding a 2018 ES, heated grips, cruise control, I've died and gone to heaven!

Welcome from Texas. Move up to. . . . what? Another blue & white spinning prop. . . . or a gloriously boring Tenere? :D
Lol, if I was going for another prop, I wouldn’t be here. Really enjoyed my F650, but want something a bit bigger and Japanese. Like the DL650 for its handling, but the power is a bit underwhelming.

Welcome to the forum. Take a moment to put your location in your profile, it gives context to your posts later on and helps others give better answers if you have questions.

How many water pumps have you gone thru on the F650? The wife put about 120k on a '11 F650GS twin. I assume yours is the single. The S10 is a big step up in power, braking (and weight too).

Location entered.

Yeah, its the single cylinder bike (only 1 water pump replacement), 48K before the transmission bearing went out. I took it apart to fix it (dealership cost would be more than the bike is worth), but got tired of messing with it, especially when my wife said I could get a new-to-me bike . Been looking at 'stroms, Africa Twins, Teneres, and Tiger 800s. Ridden a few Teneres, liked some more than others (depending on set-up of the previous owner).

Welcome Jay ! Friend put 126,000 miles on his little single cylinder 650 before selling it and buying 800, he is actually on his second 800 GS right now. So a bearing went out in your 650 transmission yikes that would get very expensive.
The Tenere’s are mostly pretty reliable , other than rear wheel bearings going out on my first Tenere at only 45,000 miles while on a trip and having to wait nearly a week for new bearings my Tenere’s have been mostly trouble free.

What were the significant differences between the two? I was looking at an Adventure Sports version the other day.

Well, it all depends on what you want to do.
The Africa Twin is definitely a better off road trail bike if you're big and strong enough to handle it and pick it up on your own.
The Super Tenere ES model is a better bike for cruising and can do off road and gravel roads, only if you are a really a bigger strong guy. But I'm not a big strong guy and I could never pick it up.
Tenere has highway/expressway comfort with heated grips and cruise control as standard along with no chain to oil.
Having owned and ridden both bikes for 30,000 km, each, I think I have an insight to both of these super reliable gems.
So, first decide what you plan to do. After all, there is no bike suitable for all riding.
Hope this helps

I started with an 07 F650GS. Wanted a more comfortable highway experience, and I hate paying big bucks to a dealership for service. In spite of my wife urging me on to a big GS, I went with an '18 S10ES , and I am enjoying it very much. Love the comfort on the highway, so little upset from crosswinds or from semi wash. Compared to the little GS- wow what a difference. Still fun on back roads, fun on gravel. Only downside- it sounds like crap, rattles, the exhaust note lacks. And yes, it is heavy. So what, I am still strong, and deaf anyway, turn up the Cardo! (Want to buy an older F650GS?)

Lol, I'll pass on the F650GS. Do you feel the handling is notably slower on the S10 compared to the F?

The 650 handled nice, easy to flick, but the S10 is no slouch. Now that I am used to it- I think it handles well. I did spend a few weeks on a 1200GS in 2018, yes, it handled a little better (to me- I may be low on the skill ladder!). But I've been practicing swerves, dodging around our many potholes, the Yammie is not bad at all.

The Honda has a 21" front wheel, chain drive, and is much lighter. The Tenere has a 6 1/2 gallon fuel tank, shaft drive, and weighs 600lbs. The Honda is the better off road bike. But, and I am biased, the Tenere rules everywhere else.

First of all, she feels lighter than the scale reads. She's not a sport bike, but don't tell her that. I was amazed how well she handles when the road starts to twist. (I can keep up with my kid on his R6) Second of all, shaft drive is wonderful. Much less maintenance, and no adjustment needed.

So, SHUMBA is right. . . . decide where most of your riding going to be. . . . 'cuz they're the same, but different. :)
