Has anyone here fitted a Garmin 340 / 390 to the S10

Apparently it comes with a "Motorcycle Mount" but this just looks to be a square plastic tray with holes in the back as if you then need to bolt the sat-nav into the tray.

There is no sign of anything used to then connect the "mount" to the bike so I am wondering if you also need to buy a bike specific mount like the ones Touratech and SW Motech sell - but they cost almost as much as the sat-nav

The power cable in the pictures I see also looks like it then needs to be pushed into the sat-nav, I was expecting the "mount" to be a wonderful device that actually fits onto the bike and then you just clip the sat-nav in and it picks up the power from the "mount" - I have seen this setup with the BMW system based on the Garmin units and I know the Tom Tom works in a similar way.

It is looking like buying a "motorcycle" sat nav from Garmin will offer no real benefit over my car sat-nav in a case which I have to plug into the power and audio cables each time I use it, however this has the advantage of costing about 1/2 the cost of the bike units - and if I need more kit to actually fit the 340/390 models with a quick-release systemthe price will be more like 3 times the cost of my current car unit.

Anyone out there actually running one of these?

I own the Zumo 660 and the 590LM and I can tell you it comes with everything you need to mount it to the bike. You wire the motorcycle mount into power, and it has leads for Microphone, line in, and speakers out. Additionally, the 590LM has a USB connector wire, and I would assume the 390 has it also. I do not use any of these on the 590LM as I'm connected via bluetooth.

The motorcycle mount includes a ram mount plate that screws into the back of the mount. It also has a small ram arm, and another U-bolt style ram-ball handlebar mount. So while it comes with everything you need to mount it, I did not use any of this on my Tenere, and bought the Touratech locking mount and extender plate instead and mounted it to the accessory bar on the windshield. It does add weight to the windshield mounts and causes it to bounce a bit going over big bumps.

The GPS knows which mount it is in (car / motorcycle), and changes profile appropriately. The Zumo is also waterproof, and vibration resistant.

I had a Nuvi mounted on my kawasaki concours initially - and I literally rattled it to the point that the audio connector surface mount came off the main board - there were also other little "issues" with it that I attribute to being vibrated excessively. I learned that lesson - car GPS on a motorcycle is not very durable. You will also get tired of putting a baggy over it at the first sign of rain.

Bottom line - I'm glad I splurged for the Zumos. I would have hated to buy something cheaper and wish I had bought the Zumo to begin with.

A better picture I found - on the 590, the cables are part of the motorcycle mount, on the 390 it looks like they plug in somehow. the motorcycle mount in the lower left corner and the ram plate is just to the upper right from it.

I lashed up a quick mount using a bit of 2mm x 25mm steel I had lying around. Looks rough but works, rather like it's owner...

I have a 390LM, and the kit that came with it works fine. I mounted it on the cross bar of my MadStat and works great. I had to use a small rubber tube on the clamp to give a little more support. Ran the power wire to the right side where I have a switched power relay.

One thing I know for sure is plenty of Zumo's have crapped out.
For the last 8 years I have been using car systems in a case, my first one is still going strong at 8 years old, bought a second car one for the Mrs bike about 3 years ago and that is also working fine.

Seeing as they charge twice the price for dedicated bike sat-navs I would expect them to be at the very least as durable as the car ones.

My Garmin 350 was mounted to the cross bar on the Madstad windshield/bracket system using a ram ball mount.
In that location the GPS located in my line of sight when ridding and worked well for me.

Thanks Paul,

It has now arrived....

The power does indeed stay connected which is good ::008::

But the mount it comes with is designed to either clamp to the Clutch cylinder so you have a heavy object swaying at one end of your handlebars, ruining handling and in a difficult to view position, or attach to the bars - but the u-clamp is too narrow for our big beasties big handlebars, or at least the centre of them....

....so your back to connecting it to the outer edges of the bar and trying to then get the sat-nav roughly in front of you, it is then still a bit low and at an odd sort of angle and still swaying from one end of the bars. So I am now looking at the other options to mount it to give a better view, a nicer look and stop it becoming an unwanted hindrance to steering.

SW-Motech offer a cross bar mount for the S10, and a cockpit one which sits above the clocks and looks perfect - just asking the UK importer if it will be OK with a Givi Airflow screen - I cannot see why not as the bottom half of the Givi is pretty much the same as the stock screen.

I used what came in the box. The power cable fits into the motorcycle mount. It has a small rubber cover to cover the contacts when the unit is off the bike. Hope the pics help.
