I have the factory crash bar setup already mounted, but am now of a mind that I need more protection than it can provide. I am planning a ride up through Kashmir, which has a high probability of having to ride through recent landslide fields. I like the factory bars' design for protecting the engine cases from strikes resulting from bouncing off of rocks while still moving. However, the factory bars do not provide much protection to the body if the bike falls over. I need a bar set that not only protects the upper sides of the fairing from tip-overs, but retains the engine casing protection of the factory.

Most of the non-factory bar sets seem to focus exclusively on the upper parts of the bike, and ignore the sides of the engine. I know I've seen at least one set that covers the entire front of the bike from the lower engine cradle to the top of the radiator. I'd appreciate any guidance on where to locate full-coverage bars. I'm looking as well, but have not had much luck.

One of the most comprehensive protection packages I've seen is the skid plate and crash bar combo from T-Rex Racing. They're reasonably priced as well.

And with the T-Rex skid plate, you can change the oil without having to remove it.
Thanks for the lead. I'll definitely check that one out. Do either of you know if it'll fit with the factory skidplate? It's going to be enough of a hit having to pay for the bars again, without having to replace the skidplate as well.

If your desire is more/better protection and you have the Yamaha accessories skidplate, the first thing you should do is replace that.

That skidplate bolts directly to the oil pan. Sure it is good for small stones etc, but any substantial hit gets transferred directly to the oil pan.
Make no sense to bolt a skid plate directly to the thing you are trying to protect.

Many cases on here and other sites where a good hit broke the oil pan because of this skid plate.
I would be getting a frame mounted skidplate before I would ever upgrade crash bars. If you have money left over, then look at upgrading crashbars.

Maybe I am wrong and you have a different skidplate, but I thought Yamaha only had one Aluminum plate available like in the pics on this website.

you want to do the skid plate first as jrusell says seen loads of broken oil pans in bits and needed a replacement where they are, its proper crap for any of road

I'll probably do the kit all at once. I can save at least $50 that way, according to the T-rex site. I honestly hadn't realized that the OEM plate was mounted directly to the pan. It's really stout, so it doesn't make sense that they would then have it mount to such a fragile place. Now I gotta find someone who wants the factory plate and crash bar set.

And now that I've read through the main discussion board, I guess I'd better put my order to T-Rex in posthaste before they discontinue the bars.

Factory crash bars worked very well when I had my zero mph tip over. As soon as I got home from my trip that I was on when it happened, I ordered my crash bars. I went with the T-Rex Racing. They only had in black and the bars 'disappeared ' in the body panels so I painted them. They fit nice and offer full protection. Good luck on your hunt.

I agree with all about the factory skid plate, do it first.......

IMO ACD is a better skid plate but it similar to the package deal you posted. Those bars look good and should be what you are needing. I use ALT Rider bars myself.

Just put in the order for the bars and skidplate from T-Rex racing. They'll ship to the dealer where the bike is currently in winter storage, and when they pull it out in a couple of months, I'll have them install the stuff. Regrettably T-rex Racing does not do a veterans' discount; the only discount they offer is 10% for a "social media" discount, which requires you to "Like" and Subscribe to their Youtube channel, then send them a screenshot proving you "Liked" and subscribed them, and they'll send you a coupon code for the 10%. Too much hassle, even for 50 bucks, so I skipped it.

Monkeybut, that looks very nice. That's the same colorscheme my bike has minus the painted front fender. I debated whether to try to get the bars painted before installation, but I think I'll just leave them black. If I had done it, it would have been something highly-contrasting like electric blue or something because why not.

I don't know about the radiator side as I have not needed in there. The electrical side is accessible with the bars on. The first time I struggled with it but from that point on, it hasn't been an issue to take the cover off. It is a bit tight but it does come off.

Just read a few reviews , one reviewer said both side panels are easily removed after the T-Rex Crash Bars are installed.
The sight lists the price at $300 which seems reasonable but so far I haven’t seen anything about shipping

Love the T-Rex bars and I went with the combo with the skid plate. What I like about the plate is how high it comes up and the little door to take the filter off. Install went well other than one of the brackets was bent at the wrong angle. Nothing that couldn't be fixed with the 'course adjustment tool'.20200517_110354.jpg

Here is a brandnew set of T-Rex Crashbars listed on eBay from a seller in Dallas Texas $344 free shipping. In one place the ad says they are powder coated black but in another place says they are a satin finish, the picture looks like a light color definitely not black.
