Finally got bike back. Turns out it was intermittently going off cylinders. 4 new coils fitted. Lot smoother and more enjoyable to ride. Still judders a bit below 3000 rpm, although not as bad as my last bike KTM SMT. From what I've read here and other sites that's just way S10 is or am I wrong?

I personally think she runs a bit like a farm tractor. All mechanical noises which I feared in the beginning. I came from a smooth 4cil so then you’re up for a change to this thumping 2cil. But it turns out to be her character. Being a farm tractor makes it almost bulletproof ;)

So saga continued. Once again after having been to main Yamaha dealers and new coils fitted. Couple of days later starts running badly again. Took it back independent dealer i brought it from. Who whet over everything again. Finally pulled fuel pump and striped it. Found fuel filter was almost completely blocked. Filter cleaned pump rebuilt. Bike is now running an absolute treat. Even better than when i first got bike. This appears to be an issue with Yamaha's as he has previously encountered the same problem with MT07 & 09. Very poor design that fuel filter is not separate from pump, considering cost of a pump is £640.

I’ve got a new filter laying around that is going in this winter when servicing my bike. Also dealers over here say the fuel filter isn’t separate. Can only buy complete pump. Fortunately uncle Ali in China sells the filters separately. Good to hear you’re happy with the bike now, go enjoy!

Yeah the filter is easily replaceable. It's just press fit. I removed mine and cleaned it without any issues. Getting the pump out of the tank is a bit fiddly.

Where is all the dirt coming from ? Fuel pumps in the USA have there own filters to prevent pumping crap into your tank.

Had another chat with dealer. Filter was blocked with he discribed as slime. He did find out bike was parked up and not use for almost a year before he got it. So we assume fuel has gone off and blocked filter.

In Europa they do also, but not all gasstations have clean tanks. Now and then gunk gets in. Had it more than once. The premium gasstations are usually oké but the cheap unmanned ones can give problems. And we’ve got the ethanol based crap nowadays which gives more then 1 problem. My oldtimers handle it very bad..

Even the filters on the station pumps need replacing. They get clogged, and the flow slows waaaay down. I'm sure "gunk" finds it's way through the filters.

I cleaned mine and put it back on. 50k miles of Ms. gas. Most of it from Wally world. It was brown and nasty. My bike was still running fine before I cleaned it. I think I'm getting a mile or 2 more mpg.

Here in Wisconsin premium fuel does not have ethanol, that’s a big part of the reason it costs about 75 cents a gallon more than regular. Yamaha recommends premium for the Tenere so that’s what I use except on the rare occasion when it’s not available, I have never noticed any real difference running regular or premium.
My Goldwing recommends regular 87 octane which contains 10% ethanol unless you pay extra for non ethanol regular. Ethanol has never caused my Goldwing any trouble that I’m aware of in the last 569,000 miles.

The replaceable filter is the pump pre filter, the main larger filter is not replaceable except as a complete pump assembly. It can be back flushed. BWC did a write up a long time ago, pictures may be gone now.

I found a source of 92 octane eth free gas near me, so that is what i will run all winter for sure. No need to stabilize ethanol free fuel if its going to be used in less than six months.

Did not know that there are two filters on/in the pump assembly. Learned something today. Thanks!
