Hi,

Only had XT about 4 weeks and have a couple of questions.

1, Is anyone aware of any fueling issues between 2500 - 4000rpm? When riding in lowers gears in town on steady throttle the rpm suddenly drops for second or so before jumping back up again. Feels like the fuel or ignition has cut out. There are no warning lights on dash, happens in both modes. I have read it maybe throttle bodies need balanced, but not sure. Also on cold starting it idles very roughly almost stalling and there is sometimes a strong smell of petrol!

2. With bike on centre stand, engine off and in 1st gear, how much movement should there be at rear wheel.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Allen.

Your rear wheel will rock back and forth approx an inch or so. Completely normal. Here is a link to a short clip.

Sounds like you might be from a different country than the USA with different registration methods.
If you show us a picture of the dash gauges we should be able to tell if it’s a generation one or two.
Your fueling issue is very common, my generation one had the issue and my generation two has it even worse, many folks claim having the computer custom flashed usually makes the problem disappear, hard to believe Yamaha keeps sending bikes out like that. My generation two averages about 8 mpg better than the generation one did.
It's registered 2016, but think it a 2013/14 model (23P)

If you are in gear when you notice the fueling issue, I don’t understand how the RPMs could drop without also having the speed drop too?? When in gear there is a fixed ratio between the crankshaft speed and rear wheel speed.

The rough idle would make me lean towards doing a throttle body balance. It shouldn't affect between 2-4000rpm, but start with he simple things first and see if it also cures that problem.
Throttle opening is very small at low rpm so hopefully it fixes both issues.

Problem solved, turned out need new spark plugs. It would appear they were never changed from new.
When I purchase the bike it had 11,800 miles. Service book stamped at 10,500 miles and states 'engine oil, oil filter, final drive oil, air filter, spark plugs changed and throttle body balanced.
Moral of the story never trust service book. On the upside dealer I brought it from has now done all of the above foc. Now running a lot smoother :)

good fix, but check the throttle body sinc. anyway, and also probably have the fuel filter cleaned or replaced....

Well that didn't last long. Went for first long run yesterday, about 20 mile in bike started playing up again. Back to dealers, new spark plugs already black in few hundred miles. Appear to be over fuelling. Dealer is sending bike to main Yamaha dealer for full diagnostic of fuel system. Opinion at this stage is faulty TPS
