At least two of you now have noticed that something minor has changed around here recently, so let's start with the "why."

A couple of years ago we had a member on the forum who had difficulties in getting along with others and as he left the forum in a huff he spent a lot of time to hunt down and delete each of his posts. We are a smaller closer family than big ol' ADV so after somebody has been a member for a couple of years, mass deletions create havoc throughout the forum. Holes are created in numerous threads and conversations where pages of posts may be referring back to one which is no longer there. More recently, we've tried to work with two additional members only to find the next time we logged on that those two guys had done the same. While we don't understand this spoiler (turd in the punch bowl) logic, as a result of a discussion between Venture and us moderators, the machinery in the background of the forum has been tweaked to prevent this from now on.

As a result, members will find that the ability to edit &/or delete their posts now expires after a day or so.

For 99.9% this will have pretty much no impact on anything at all because we write a post, go back and make any edits within a day, the discussion moves on, and we never need to further edit or delete the post. The biggest exceptions are the "For Sale" threads and we don't have too many of them. Just add a post saying "SOLD" and let the thread slide to the back pages of oblivion with time.

If you want to state something beyond what you wrote in a post that gets locked, just add a new post to the thread and refer to your previous one. If you wake up with a hangover after a long weekend and really think your witty comments should be nuked after the timer locks things, feel free to click on the "Report" button at the lower left corner and ask for it. We'll be happy to do any edits or deletions for you.

Most posts I make have autocorrect gibberish that after I post have to go back and correct.
It's really bad on a smartphone!!

I never noticed you could go back more than a few days to edit posts. That's too bad when a member feels he is so fed up that his own posts have to be deleted.

OTOH, cyber bullying is real and in every forum there are always a few bad apples that make it their mission to selfishly attack other members by name calling and putting others down because of their opinion. It's very sad when someones own insecurities bleed over to hiding behind the keyboard like a scared coward and deliberately tormenting someone without ever meeting them in person. I have actually seen this in public threads and in the PM's as well. This forum is pretty mild compared to others I have seen.

I posted this morning at 7:53 AM and now at 10:05, I see that I am already locked out, much shorter time than the stated after a day or so .
I made some edits within a few minutes of posting now I see no Edit or Delete, just the Report button.

It's a new thing for us too, so if a post is a problem let us know and we'll take care of it.

JK buddy, I love ya!!!!! And being a MOD/ADMIN sucks at times.

6 hour limit on delete/edit currently. As previously mentioned, if something really needs an edit or delete later on just report the post with a comment. Over time we'll settle out what is truly needed.

Unfortunate that it gets to this level of silliness.

I know that at times I go back to read stuff, especially in ride reports, and want to edit some grammar or spelling issues, so it's an inconvenience not to be able to do it, but totally understand why you want to put this in.

Agreed.

I can’t imagine any post being so valuable and unique that suffering its deletion would cause any real harm. How about 7 days to freeze? Cut some slack for all the valuable contributors here, who shouldn’t be penalized because of a couple of outliers.

The point of the forum is to contribute and be a venue where people can ask questions and have them answered. So when someone wants to 'take their ball and go home', it can end up with answers deleted that others could find useful, or screw up context to where you don't know what the question was, so the answer doesn't make much sense.

Sometimes I go back and read a post I made when someone 'likes' it well after I posted it, to remind me what it was about. Then I may see some grammar or spelling errors and edit to correct them, but rarely do I make major changes.

Damn, now I'm really curious about the drama that started this.
I think the gun thread kicked off the latest string of delete festing. Someone couldn't read the rules for the thread and follow them, then cried about it when their post was deleted. Then declared they were leaving and started deleting all their content.
