Flashing, does it really produce more power?

I have been wondering about flashing the ECU. There has been a story circulating about Gen 1 bikes producing an extra 20bhp after having their ECU flashed and I would assume that this would apply to Gen 2 bikes also. Now I fully understand that Gen 1 bikes can have the restrictions in gears 1, 2 and 3 removed and the fuelling map can be rewritten in both generations to give a quicker, smoother action and also to remove dips in the power and torque curves that are present to get around noise and pollution regulations, but to me, an extra 20 bhp sounds like pure fantasy when you have the same camshafts and pistons in your motor, so my question is does anyone have irrefutable dyno charts that show if there are really 20 bhp being “released” from the SuperTen’s motor?

I've had mine flashed and am happy with it. I doubt there was any measurable HP gain but the seat-of-the-pants dyno shows appreciable gains. I believe removing the "restrictions" in the first 3 gears (making the twist grip to throttle plate angle 1:1) makes it feel like you've picked up a bunch of power from an acceleration perspective.

Or I could be all wet.......

2-3 peak bhp at most and that comes from leaning it out at wide open throttle because stock it runs too rich. Little to be gained by advancing the timing on an ST either - it’s not a detuned high performance design. I would say that 20bhp is impossible without ridiculous work on a lighter balanced flywheel, high comp pistons, gas flow head work, injectors, intake and exhaust etc and then it would be peaky and intractable. Far cheaper to get an R1250GS / KTM Super Adventure / Multistrada / S1000XR. But you can remap it to make it nicer to ride, less engine braking, smoother throttle response.
I just had a generic ecu flash without the dyno, so I’ve no charts, but the improvement was significant.

That is pretty much my reasoning too :) It is about rideabiliy really, I had heard people claiming 20bhp after a reflash but to me, you don’t get that kind of power out of a normally aspirated engine without doing a whole lot more expensive stuff to the internals.

Yes, much better in that respect. You’re not far from Chris Steedman at CJS Racing, just south of Bristol http://cjsracing.co.uk/ either for a dyno map or just get your ecu to him for a generic flash.
Yes, already made contact with Chris, he did my ZZR14 for me previously, just trying to be as sure as I can be that such a flash will help with the yo -yo when decelerating ... I will contact him this coming week for a date. Cheers.

mine did with chris at cjsracing having it on the dyno for over 4 hrs

I will bell him ... he said a generic flash should sort it when he emailed me this week and so that may not included the dyno? I will ask him as I fancy riding down and having it done whilst I wait.

thats what i did , i only live a hour away from his dyno, so he said it,ll be better set up in the dyno booth than sending the ecu to him so i rode it
there and watched him thrash it for 4 hrs on the rolling rode in both S mode and T mode lol

Chris also did my flash. Incredible difference from stock. Way more power and much smoother. He also made my T mode way better by using the unrestricted 6th gear map for all gears. If you're going there, you can have him do a before and after dyno run to show the naysayers what they're missing.... ;)

I had mine flashed by Nels and 2 Wheel Dyno Works and its better in every way, in every aspect. Nels published some of the first maps for this bike. His work is exemplary.
