First oil change, oil light is staying on.

Hey everyone.

I just performed the first oil change on my 2020 S10, and upon completion the oil light is on, and staying on. I did:

  • Sit her on the side stand, pull the two drain plugs, and drain the oil after warming the bike up.
  • Pull the lower front cowl, and pull the oil filter.
  • Wait for it all to drain.
  • Install new K&N 204-1 filter, and torque to spec in manual, 13ft-lb.
  • Install drain bolts with new crush washers, torque to spec in manual, 15ft-lb.
  • Reinstall the lower front cowl.
  • Put the bike on the centre stand, and add just over 3.4L of 10w40 esther blend synthetic oil from Bel Ray. This is the same oil I've been using for years, and the same stuff I was running in my Tracer 900.
  • At that point I fired it up, no problem, but the oil light is on.
  • I panicked a little, and added probably 300ml of oil on top of the 3.4L I already put in.
  • Fired it back up, and the oil light is still on.

I've changed my own oil on my bikes annually for the last 15 years, never had an issue. The only odd part of this one, was the two drain plugs. I know the bike has approximately 3.7L of oil in it, and it's not leaking. I'm panicking wondering if somehow the oil filter is screwed up, and not flowing oil, or I don't know. I'm afraid to run it for more than a 30 seconds or so.

Any advice is welcome, thanks.

What is the oil level in the sight glass?

Thanks for all the responses so far. The oil level in the sight glass is at the top when I checked it last. I saw a lot of just dump 4 quarts in, which is darn near what I've put in it at this point, 3.7L; 4 quarts is 3.78L if I recall correctly. It definitely has oil, but that dang oil light is still on.

In respect to the filter, I've quadruple checked that the K&N KN-204-1 is compatible with the S10; that said, I'm going to buy a Yamaha filter tomorrow and swap them. Beyond that I can't see any reason for the oil light to be on. I should mention, it's on with the engine running or not. I know it's an oil level sensor, and not an oil pressure sensor, so I may check that sensor if I can find it, and figure out how to check it. I understand it's a variable resistance sensor, and I should be looking for something around 500ohms when it's full.

Here is another quick idea. Get on the bike (no side stand or center stand), do not start it, grab the front brake and compress the forks up and down
and tilt the bike side to side as much as you can handle. By moving the oil around it can perhaps get to the sensor.

I've done that too. No replacement for actually riding around, sloshing it good.

You know what they say about assuming....
Oh, I know, which is why I outlined the filter I used in the original post. KN-204-1. My concern with it, is that it's the only thing that's changed relatively speaking. I will try sloshing the oil around, see if that makes a difference.

This past Spring when I did my S10's oil/oil filter change (OEM Yammy filter, Motul 7100 4T 10W40 full synth) the same exact way I have done it countless times before,
afterwards I went out for a quick errand ride and my oil light came on and I was like WTF? I knew the oil amount I put in was spot on so after I rode around for like 10 minutes
the light went out and has not come on again since.

Thanks for that, actually sort of comforting. I'm fairly confident I'm going to find the filter full of oil when I pull it off tomorrow, but I figure I might as well drop another ~$25 for a Yamaha filter just for my own peace of mind at this point.

Interestingly, the Tracer 900 CP3 motor takes the same filter, and I ran KN-204-1's on it through 3 oil changes. I like that filter because it has a 17mm nut on the front to remove and install it. Really handy. I also have a filter wrench, but I like that nut on the K&N filter.

If the amount of oil that you actually put in is what you originally stated plus the top off all should be good.
Perhaps the oil level sensor is not functioning properly.

Since the sensor is pressure related, changing the filter won't have ant effect on the light. The 204 is the correct filter. You know it has oil in it, so take it out for a ride.

The oil light is triggered by a level sensor, the is no pressure sensor.
If the light is staying on when the oil level in the sight glass is at the full mark, then the sensor is just stuck or possibly disconnected. Check the wires and go for a ride over a bump or two and the sensor will likely shake free.
