Feeling lucky today, clipped a deer.

Here in the East, there's them that has and them that will hit a forest rat or more. You can see how scared they are under my back deck even when I'm obviously there.

I killed one on Skyline Drive with a Ducati ST2 and stayed up. Lots of close calls on the Tenere. One of our cars had five deer hits, most of which were in the sides. If I'm riding the highway home at night on a bike I try to follow a car or truck and if it's just before one of the big highway lights at a ramp when they hit, there's a back lit explosion of blood mist that is impressive.

I think we have better outcomes with speed (if we don't do something stupid) because the wheels are such big gyroscopes.

After seeing this I got one. Deer are our bane of our lives. One killed the safety staff writer four cycle world. The guy in the video rides our bike. These things cost less than some helmets and can be used more than once.
I and some of the other long timers here will remember that video as Fred was a member for a while who painted his bike in some day glow orange paint. That is a kite surfer on the side of it.

He's the guy who got fed up with all of us and deleted his history of posts in the middle of a night. He'd debate anybody on any subject so suddenly there were a lot of big holes in numerous threads. It was a bit bizarre.

I saw that happen in the Strom forum as well. Very well know member, actually contributed a lot to the board, including well thought out maintenance posts with lots of pictures. He started having and attitude change that was obvious. One day, everything was gone, including all the pinned maintenance threads (or at least the photos from them). He was a good guy, so I was a bit concerned about him. I had his email and checked in on him. He was just done. I was still concerned after talking to him.

That has happened on the UK Strom forum previously, so to prevent threads becoming unintelligible nonsense posters get 30 mins to edit then the post is locked. After that only admins can amend.

I think the worst deer "infestation" that I've ever seen was the road between the Grand Canyon North rim and Jacob's Lake. Left the north rim at dusk, which turned to dark quickly. They were e v e r y w h e r e. o_O

My sailboat forum is on the same Xen Foro software and it turns out there is a "switch" the Admin can use to lock posts to prevent editing after a pre-set period of time. We only had the problem here the one time with Fred so no need to get drastic like that.

For me it was riding between the two lodges up on Skyline Drive (north end of Blue Ridge Parkway). We had dinner at one lodge and had to ride back to our room at the other lodge. It got dark while we were eating and all those calm deer we'd seen right up next to the road, were now spooked and had all their kin with them. It ranks up there with the most uneasy even, scary thing I've ever done on a motorcycle. They were all around us. You could hear them snorting next to you, but you could not see them. I'm not sure we ever got to 2nd gear on that ride.

We got back to our lodge and one of the employee ask us in disbelief, 'you rode here on motorcycles after dark?!?' Yes, but that will never happen again.

Hate to say it but hit another of the damned things just last night with the F150. Getting home means tight twisty roads switching between crops and creeks in the woods so the area is infested with them. Luckily, this was a smaller doe that the corner of the bumper hit on the butt so the last I saw she was cart-wheeling off into the weeds with her two front legs up in the air pointed at me.
No truck damage this time.

I have hit 3 deer. Totaled one bike and the other two times the bike was on the front wheel panic braking and just bumped the deer. No damage to either bike but one had hair around the head light. I have had one deer jump me! Came from the lower side unseen leaped the road me the bike and landed on the top of the bank on the other side of the road. I thought Santa was on take off mode or something! I never ride that i am not looking for animals of all kinds. Just have to here. It amazes me the way the deer hair color changes through the year and because of that how well they can hide in plain sight on the side of the road in the surroundings. I see deer every single day and some days it isn't uncommon to see 20 or 30 deer in my 15 mile ride to work or home. As stupid as deer are i would rather deal with them than some drivers on the road!

Had a deer kamikaze into the side of my work truck in broad daylight in Austin Texas. Hit behind my fuel tank and the tandems ate him up and spit him out . Not pretty. Working the night shift project in Wimberley Texas were there is a deer every hundred feet. I’m surprised that I’ve not gotten another.

We visited Colorado Springs last September. Saw several deer in the residential areas. Just walking. . . . not concerned with traffic. I don't know why the state puts up "watch for deer" signs. No s**t there's deer. Save the money from the signs, and fix the roads.

Headed home from a weekend camping excursion this morning. I had just got on the road and was winding her up to the speed limit to set the cruise control. Glanced down at the speedo to check progress and then back up to the road just in time to see a brown streak cross within 3 feet of my front wheel...I could have slapped that deer in the ass as I passed. A quick thank you to the 2 wheel gods and a heightened sense of awareness for critters trying to commit suicide got me back home safely. Be careful out there!
